Book Property and the Family in Biblical Law

Download or read book Property and the Family in Biblical Law written by Raymond Westbrook and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 1991-08-01 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biblical property law was concerned less with the efficient use and transfer of commercial assets than with protecting the rights of the family to the sources of their economic survival. This important collection of essays explores the legal link between property and family in the Bible, whether through the general law of inheritance or through special institutions such as redemption, the levirate and the sabbatical and jubilee years. It brings together the author's existing contributions, previously published in disparate law journals, to which have been added several unpublished studies and a general introduction.

Download or read book Law and the Bible written by Robert F. Cochran and published by InterVarsity Press. This book was released on 2013-09-01 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bible is full of law. Yet too often, Christians either pick and choose verses out of context to bolster existing positions, or assume that any moral judgment the Bible expresses should become the law of the land. Law and the Bible asks: What inspired light does the Bible shed on Christians’ participation in contemporary legal systems? It concludes that more often than not the Bible overturns our faulty assumptions and skewed commitments rather than bolsters them. In the process, God gives us greater insight into what all of life, including law, should be. Each chapter is cowritten by a legal professional and a theologian, and focuses on a key aspect of the biblical witness concerning civil or positive law--that is, law that human societies create to order their communities, implementing and enforcing it through civil government. A foundational text for legal professionals, law and prelaw students, and all who want to think in a faithfully Christian way about law and their relationship to it.

Download or read book Old Testament Law written by Dale Patrick and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2011-06-28 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dale Patrick examines the first five books of the Bible--the Pentateuch--the Law. He provides an effective method for studying and understanding this vital part of the canon. His introduction concentrates on the exposition of the major thrust of Old Testament Law: the Ten Commandments, the Book of the Covenant, the Deuteronomic Law, the Holiness Code, and the Priestly Law. Law--rules and regulations, concepts and principles, legal codes--written and unwritten. Patrick tackles important questions surrounding the formation of the Law. What is the Law? How was it formulated? What implications does the Law of the Israelites have for Christians today? Patrick's deft handling and answering of these questions results in a book that provides a means to understand the specific rules governing the concepts and principles of the written law so that we may grasp the unwritten law; i.e., the justice, righteousness, and holiness required by God. Patrick offers critical exposition in a format that makes a seemingly difficult and esoteric part of the Bible accessible to the reader. This introductory text serves as a springboard to further study.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from My Neighbour's Landmark: Short Studies in Bible Land Laws First, it's against the teaching of the Bible, and no one will listen to it. Then, it's all very well in theory, but you can't carry it out and practical politicians pooh pooh it as visionary and Utopian. Lastly, when the im possible thing is done, that's exactly what we have been in favour of, all along and all men praise it, and take credit for it. Especially the practical politicians. As regards the great movement of Social Reform which, in nearly every civilized country, is working to wards the abolition of private property in land, we are beginning to hope that some of us, who have taken part in it, may after all, live to see it reach the beginning of the third stage. But although the world as a whole moves forward, some men move more slowly than others; and there are many who are still struggling against doubts which strike at the very root of the proposed reform. Book The Institutes of Biblical Law Vol 1

Download or read book The Institutes of Biblical Law Vol 1 written by R. J. Rushdoony and published by Chalcedon Foundation. This book was released on 2009-11-16 with total page 779 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To attempt to study Scripture without studying its law is to deny it. To attempt to understand Western civilization apart from the impact of Biblical law within it and upon it is to seek a fictitious history and to reject twenty centuries and their progress. The Institutes of Biblical Law has as its purpose a reversal of the present trend. it is called "Institutes" in the older meaning of the that word, i.e., fundamental principles, here of law, because it is intended as a beginning, as an instituting consideration of that law which must govern society, and which shall govern society under God. To understand Biblical law, it is necessary to understand also certain basic characteristics of that law. In it, certain broad premises or principles are declared. These are declarations of basic law. The Ten Commandments give us such declarations. A second characteristics of Biblical law, is that the major portion of the law is case law, i.e., the illustration of the basic principle in terms of specific cases. These specific cases are often illustrations of the extent of the application of the law; that is, by citing a minimal type of case, the necessary jurisdictions of the law are revealed. The law, then, asserts principles and cites cases to develop the implications of those principles, with is purpose and direction the restitution of God's order.

Book Progressive Covenantalism

    Book Details:
  • Author : Stephen J. Wellum
  • Publisher : B&H Publishing Group
  • Release : 2016-04-15
  • ISBN : 1433684039
  • Pages : 314 pages

Download or read book Progressive Covenantalism written by Stephen J. Wellum and published by B&H Publishing Group. This book was released on 2016-04-15 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Building on the foundation of Kingdom through Covenant (Crossway, 2012), Stephen J. Wellum and Brent E. Parker have assembled a team of scholars who offer a fresh perspective regarding the interrelationship between the biblical covenants. Each chapter seeks to demonstrate how the covenants serve as the backbone to the grand narrative of Scripture. For example, New Testament scholar Thomas Schreiner writes on the Sabbath command from the Old Testament and thinks through its applications to new covenant believers. Christopher Cowan wrestles with the warning passages of Scripture, texts which are often viewed by covenant theologians as evidence for a "mixed" view of the church. Jason DeRouchie provides a biblical theology of “seed” and demonstrates that the covenantal view is incorrect in some of its conclusions. Jason Meyer thinks through the role of law in both the old and new covenants. John Meade unpacks circumcision in the OT and how it is applied in the NT, providing further warrant to reject covenant theology's link of circumcision with (infant) baptism. Oren Martin tackles the issue of Israel and land over against a dispensational reading, and Richard Lucas offers an exegetical analysis of Romans 9-11, arguing that it does not require a dispensational understanding. From issues of ecclesiology to the warning passages in Hebrews, this book carefully navigates a mediating path between the dominant theological systems of covenant theology and dispensationalism to offer the reader a better way to understand God’s one plan of redemption.
