Book excerpt: Originally published in 1987, John D. Leshy presents this scholarly study of the 1872 Mining Law as a legal treatise and history of mining in the West from the point of view of mineral exploration and production. This mining law governed the United States mining practice yet had never been changed. The Mining Law attempts to highlight the role of policy and government as well as the more obscure elements of the law which complicated mining practice in the eighties. This title will be of interest to students of Environmental Studies and policy makers.

Book Law of Perpetual Motion

Download or read book Law of Perpetual Motion written by IntroBooks Team and published by IntroBooks. This book was released on with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Law of Perpetual Motion can be defined as a mechanism that never stops moving. If it starts rolling once and is left running, it would run indefinitely. People may not be aware of the Big Freeze. It is the theoretical end of everything. It is the stage at which the universe has stretched to having no leverage of thermodynamic energy. In other words, it is the threshold at which the entire universe will cease to maintain motion. The entire universe will become absolute zero. It is the coldest temperature, where everything is at a standstill. In short, the Big Freeze is a period of infinite, everlasting, and absolutely quiet darkness. It will not repeat for another 100 trillion years or more. It has to be kept in mind that an actual perpetual motion machine would be capable of running for at least that long. Many plans for perpetual motion machines may be seen online that claim to be functional. Looking at those designs, it is not illogical to believe that some of them could (if properly designed) continue running. If someone wants to succeed, the impact would be massive. There is an infinite supply of energy. However, it would be more than that by way of unrestricted energy. Perpetual motion devices governed by the Law of Perpetual Motion are, unfortunately, unattainable related to the inherent physics of the universe.

Book Thermal Properties of Matter

Download or read book Thermal Properties of Matter written by Joe Khachan and published by Morgan & Claypool Publishers. This book was released on 2018-02-20 with total page 63 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ancient Greeks believed that all matter was composed of four elements: earth, water, air, and fire. By a remarkable coincidence (or perhaps not), today we know that there are four states of matter: solids (e.g. earth), liquids (e.g. water), gasses (e.g. air) and plasma (e.g. ionized gas produced by fire). The plasma state is beyond the scope of this book and we will only look at the first three states. Although on the microscopic level all matter is made from atoms or molecules, everyday experience tells us that the three states have very different properties. The aim of this book is to examine some of these properties and the underlying physics.

Book The Law of Divine Oneness

Download or read book The Law of Divine Oneness written by IntroBooks Team and published by IntroBooks. This book was released on with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The incarnation of the divine oneness is the essence that dwells in the human soul - with whom one is closely associated. It is a huge deal and a remarkable metamorphosis that unfolds before all and sundry. People have arrived at a point in time and space when the pretense no longer burdens them to be someone they were never meant to be. That they have reached a stage where they no more require to sacrifice the anguish and suffering that come with being incarnated at this physical juncture of existence. The price has to be paid. Within the human fraternity, an incredible phenomenon is taking place. The misery and pain have been a constant threat. The concept of micro family is now coming to an end. The incarnation of self-judgment - the divine one of all time - into the very physical boundary is finally starting to occur. The Law of Divine Oneness is here. What a fantastic find! What a glorious splendor! What a spectacular event that is just getting started and is already showering down on humanity! The all-powerful divine oneness is now entering the world. The excellent resistance of incarnation itself is dominating the universe. The sheer enormity and uniqueness of the actual incarnation or manifestation can no longer keep the forces of light and affection from discovering reality. Eventually, the journey of the human body to develop into what it was meant for has began. The numerous untiring and freely abundant energies of the living bodies are getting exposed. It comprises physical and mental involvement nurturing and fostering the enormous task that is finally coming to fruition. The divine oneness of all time is now well-equipped to initiate the entire ethics into the vessels that have been created specifically for this purpose.

Book excerpt: The crucifix is in! You can fool most of the people most of the time. In The God Con, Lee Moller, a life-long atheist and skeptic, looks at organized religion through the lens of the con. Organized religion has been selling an invisible product, that it never has to deliver, for thousands of years. It has given us bigotry, rampant pedophilia, terrorism, and bloodshed beyond imagining. And its acolytes have, in turn, given organized religion power over their bank accounts, their reproduction, and their very “souls”.

Book Worlds of Their Own

    Book Details:
  • Author : Robert J. Schadewald
  • Publisher : Xlibris Corporation
  • Release : 2008-02-15
  • ISBN : 1462810039
  • Pages : 274 pages

Download or read book Worlds of Their Own written by Robert J. Schadewald and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2008-02-15 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: History is written by the winners; including the histories of science and scholarship. Unorthodoxies that flourish at the grassroots are often beneath the contempt of historians. Zetetic astronomy (flat-Earth science) was a household term in Victorian England, but not a single reference to it is found in conventional histories. We ignore such histories at our peril; the modern intelligent design movement is almost a carbon copy of the 19th century flat-Earth movement in its argumentative techniques. When orthodox science finds itself stumped, or a certain segment finds it unpalatable, the unorthodox may rush in to fill the void. The past two decades have brought a surge of interest in the history and philosophy of science. But how do we discern between pseudo and actual science? To fully understand what science is, we must understand what science is not. Written with penetrating insight into the minds of alternative thinkers, this book throws light on the differences between pseudo and actual science. The droll humor that permeates Worlds of Their Own makes it as enjoyable a read as it is enlightening. Despite its focus on unorthodox ideas, Worlds of Their Own is about human nature. Whether they drew their ideas from the Bible or nature, all the pseudoscientists discussed in this book were driven to communicate their truth to the misinformed world. None was afflicted with self-doubt. All defended their truth with similar standards of evidence, modes of reasoning, and methods of scholarship. Their counterparts are legion the blue-collar philosopher who refutes Einstein from his barstool, the preacher who refutes (but cannot define) evolution from his pulpit, the narcissist who promotes quackery courtesy of modern talk shows and infomercials. Each topic discussed in Worlds of Their Own covers a once-popular concept that persists to this day. Numerous works examine or debunk pseudoscientific ideas. Worlds of Their Own is unique in letting unorthodox thinkers speak for themselves. Readers will want to buy the book to learn how such people argued their cases against conventional views. Worlds of Their Own is a timeless book offering humor, substance, and analysis for a mainstream audience. Moreover, it is a unique source book on unorthodox ideas that nearly everyone has heard about but few fully understand. And the source material is rare. For example, the National Union Catalog lists only four U.S. libraries the Library of Congress, New York Public, Yale, and Duke that hold Carpenters One Hundred Proofs That the Earth Is Not a Globe (1885). Bobs own extensive collection of flat-Earth literature as well as his collection of literature advocating various other unorthodoxies was donated to the University of Wisconsin after his death. It is housed there as the Robert Schadewald Collection on Pseudo-Science. This collection consists of 885 books and pamphlets (many from the 19th century) as well as 70 boxes of personal files and collected news clippings. Praise for Bob Schadewald: Perhaps the most important thing that Bob taught me has to do with the striking insights one can gain by first studying the history of one particular kind of crackpot science for example, the flat-Earth movement in past centuries and then realizing how reliable that knowledge can be for gaining insight into a seemingly unrelated pseudoscience of more contemporary times for example, the creation science movement that flourished in Iowa and across the country in recent decades, and is now returning as intelligent design today. Nobody, but nobody could make the case for this more convincingly than Bob Schadewald, and Lois has included some of Bobs best material doing so between the covers of Worlds of Their Own. John W. Patterson.emeritus Materials Science & Engineering, Iowa State University Bob Schadewald was an insightful thinker w

  • Author : R. Stephen Berry
  • Publisher : Yale University Press
  • Release : 2019-01-01
  • ISBN : 0300238789
  • Pages : 184 pages

Download or read book Three Laws of Nature written by R. Stephen Berry and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2019-01-01 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A short and entertaining introduction to thermodynamics that uses real-world examples to explain accessibly an important but subtle scientific theory A romantic description of the second law of thermodynamics is that the universe becomes increasingly disordered. But what does that actually mean? Starting with an overview of the three laws of thermodynamics, MacArthur "genius grant" winner R. Stephen Berry explains in this short book the fundamentals of a fundamental science. Readers learn both the history of thermodynamics, which began with attempts to solve everyday engineering problems, and ongoing controversy and unsolved puzzles. The exposition, suitable for both students and armchair physicists, requires no previous knowledge of the subject and only the simplest mathematics, taught as needed. With this better understanding of one science, readers also gain an appreciation of the role of research in science, the provisional nature of scientific theory, and the ways scientific exploration can uncover fundamental truths. Thus, from a science of everyday experience, we learn about the nature of the universe.
