Oudh being a new province, several significant experiments of far reaching import in these branches were tried there. A completely new police system was evolved there. A system of Honorary Magistrates was also developed. These and many other new features, after their inital trial in Oudh, were introduced in other provinces.

Book The 1857 Indian Uprising and the Politics of Commemoration

Download or read book The 1857 Indian Uprising and the Politics of Commemoration written by Sebastian Raj Pender and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2022-05-05 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Cawnpore Well, Lucknow Residency, and Delhi Ridge were sacred places within the British imagination of India. Sanctified by the colonial administration in commemoration of victory over the 'Sepoy Mutiny' of 1857, they were read as emblems of empire which embodied the central tenets of sacrifice, fortitude, and military prowess that underpinned Britain's imperial project. Since independence, however, these sites have been rededicated in honour of the 'First War of Independence' and are thus sacred to the memory of those who revolted against colonial rule, rather than those who saved it. The 1857 Indian Uprising and the Politics of Commemoration tells the story of these and other commemorative landscapes and uses them as prisms through which to view over 150 years of Indian history. Based on extensive archival research from India and Britain, Sebastian Raj Pender traces the ways in which commemoration responded to the demands of successive historical moments by shaping the events of 1857 from the perspective of the present. By telling the history of India through the transformation of mnemonic space, this study shows that remembering the past is always a political act.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on the Portuguese sources on the XVIth Century History of India and the anti-colonial struggles in Malabar led by the Zamorin and the House of Kunhali Marakkars. Their role in counteracting the Portuguese expansion deserves an indepth study and analysis. Although the present work is not a comprehensive one on the naval traditions of India, atleast it would help us promote the memory of a forgotten chapter in the History of Kerala and perpetuate the cause of national integration and communal harmony in this great country. The values cherished by the Kunhali Marakkars, to which they dedicated themselves and sacrificed their life, have a meaning for all time to come. This volume is an expression of that sentiment of Nationalism and memory of an epoch in the Asiatic History.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: India celebrated its fiftieth year of independence in 1997. This book has been written with a view to bring out India being the oldest civilized nation of the world. It would be demeaning the country to call it only a fifty-year-old independent country when we have been independent for lacs and crores of years, except for a small period of 140 years of British regime. The Muslim rule of about six hundred years has been taken as independent period because during this period, Muslim rulers were sovereign, independent Indian rulers rather than under any foreign power. And most of the kings were born and brought up in India and imbibed with Bhartiyata. It was the British who ruled India as a colony only, bracketing us with the newly found lands of America, Africa, and Australia; whereas, we had been the most advanced, most educated, and richest country of the world in the past, particularly during the Maurya, Gupta, and Mughal periods. Tracing the concept of independent India, this book has taken the shape of Indias full history, with specific reference to the theme of independence through ages, since vedas.

Book Structure and Change in Indian Society

Download or read book Structure and Change in Indian Society written by Bernard S. Cohn and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-13 with total page 866 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent theoretical and methodological innovations in the anthropological analysis of South Asian societies have introduced distinctive modifications in the study of Indian social structure and social change. This book, reporting on twenty empirical studies of Indian society conducted by outstanding scholars, reflects these trends not only with reference to Indian society itself, but also in terms of the relevance of such trends to an understanding of social change more generally. The contributors demonstrate the adaptive changes experienced by the studied groups in particular villages, towns, cities, and regions. The authors view the basic social units of joint family, caste, and village not as structural isolates, but as intimately connected with one another and with other social units through social and cultural networks of various kinds that incorporate the social units into the complex structure of Indian civilization. Within this broadened conception of social structure, these studies trace the changing relations of politics, economics, law, and language to the caste system.Showing that the caste system is dynamic, with upward and downward mobility characterizing it from pre-British times to the present, the studies suggest that the modernizing forces which entered the system since independence--parliamentary democracy, universal suffrage, land reforms, modern education, urbanization, and industrial technology--provided new opportunities and paths to upward mobility, but did not radically alter the system. The chapters in this book show that the study of Indian society reveals novel forms of social structure change. They introduce methods and theories that may well encourage social scientists to extend the study of change in Indian society to the study of change in other areas.
