Through the first edition of Open Space Connection, the curators aim to open the reflection about two differents methodologies of thinking public spaces and landscape architecture: one of them in the the French Swiss Region of Lake Leman and the other one in the Barcelona Metropolitan Area.

Book excerpt: This book deals with slums as a specific question and a central focus in urban planning. It radically reverses the official version of the history of world cities as narrated during decades: slums are not at the margin of the contemporary process of urbanization; they are an integral part of it. Taking slums as its central focus and regarding them as symptomatic of the ongoing transformations of the city, the book moves to the very heart of the problem in urban planning. The book presents 16 case studies that form the basis for a theory of the slum and a concrete development manual for the slum. The interdisciplinary approach to analysing slums presented in this volume enables researchers to look at social and economic dimensions as well as at the constructive and spatial aspects of slums. Both at the scientific and the pedagogical level, it allows one to recognize the efforts of the slum’s residents, key players in the past, and present development of their neighborhoods, and to challenge public and private stakeholders on priorities decided in urban planning, and their mismatches when compared to the findings of experts and the demands of users. Whether one is a planner, an architect, a developer or simply an inhabitant of an emerging city, the presence of slums in one’s environment – at the same time central and nonetheless incongruous – makes a person ask questions. Today, it is out of the question to be satisfied with the assumption of the marginality of slums, or of the incongruous nature of their existence. Slums are now fully part of the urban landscape, contributing to the identity and the urbanism of cities and their stakeholders.

Some of its developments are set out in this book. Care programs such as geriatric concepts of care, community based support, convalescent beds, memory clinics, palliative medicine and care and practice of clinical ethics are discussed. Research has focussed on 15 years of comparative cross-sectional studies on aging in an urban and a rural area of Switzerland, prevalence of dementia in Geneva and Zurich, clinico-neuropathological correlation, fall prevention, hip fracture outcomes and the impact of nutrition on the recovery of hip fractures. Teaching activities include interactive pre-graduate teaching of geriatrics, patient-centered medicine, post ethics, teaching the teachers by the European Academy for Medicine of Aging. Networking by the Interfaculty Center of Gerontology, Swiss Foundation for Research on Healthy Aging and the WHO program on 'Aging and Health' are in progress. This book will be of interest to geriatricians, administrators, gerontological researchers and public health managers as it gives an insight into the setting up of a geriatric team and the implementation of geriatric programs.

This book is clearly part of this type of approach. Starting from a current state of play on the issues and controversies raised by curricular and competency-based approaches (Chapters 1 and 2), this book aims at presenting new theoretical frameworks, allowing to account for the processes implied by the implementation of these pedagogical innovations and, in particular, those which, at the very heart of the skills mobilized, promote a "responsibility" dimension. Based on a developmental approach to individual and collective competencies and their evaluation (Chapters 3, 4 and 5), it attempts to show how this approach can mobilize educational practices on strong societal issues, such as "sustainable development "(Chapter 5). Lastly, it aims to provide theoretical and practical benchmarks to help engage educational teams and institutions in these innovative and responsible approaches by providing a coherent framework for doing so (Chapters 6, 7 and 8).
