This book was released on 2024-05-12 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are great deal of similarities between the arcs of Laurie in Little Women and Goethe's "sorrows of young werther." Both stories follow a young man's journey from innocence to experience and disillusionment, but the endings are vastly different. In this book we compare and contrast the two arcs to see which is more tragic. One of Louisa May Alcott´s favourite writers was the German poet Goethe and Laurie´s character arc in Little Women is surprisingly similar to Goethe´s young hero, Werther. If you’re an LMA/Little Women fan you will love it, too! rotten Tiger What a beautiful podcast! It’s so insightful and entertaining. It understands the characters perfectly (especially Laurie), I love it Jen As a long-time, die-hard Little Women fan, I LOVE this podcast! I stumbled upon it while doing research for a book series I was working on, and I am addicted! Niina is super knowledgeable in all things LW, from the book(s) to the movies and author Louisa May Alcott’s real life. I love that the discussions are based on the book and highlight the differences (sometimes controversial) between the original and newer adaptations. Highly recommended for anybody who loves getting lost in the world of Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy March. @senseandpeace, writes "At the end of part two, Jo states that she'll open up a school specifically for boys. I've seen people express their dislike about this, which I can understand, but at the same time, that is Jo's choice. It's not like Louisa May Alcott was forced by anyone to have a Jo teach boys only. This is also another case of how those people see themselves in Jo. There's nothing wrong with relating to her and using her as a self-insert, yet failing to understand her because you can see how Jo relates more to boys and has an easier time communicating with them. I don't think Jo has any female friends outside of her family. plus Jo says this herself who believe is Nat, in one chapter of Little Men when they talk. The two things she loves are books and boys. Does that make Jo a misogynist for not including girls? No. She just happens to have an easier connection with boys same as she feels a connection to books".

Book excerpt: Flamboyant, theatrical and ambitious, Margaret Cavendish was one of the seventeenth century's most striking figures: a woman who ventured into the male spheres of politics, science, philosophy and literature. The Blazing World is a highly original work: part Utopian fiction, part feminist text, it tells of a lady shipwrecked on the Blazing World where she is made Empress and uses her power to ensure that it is free of war, religious division and unfair sexual discrimination. This volume also includes The Contract, a romance in which love and law work harmoniously together, and Assaulted and Pursued Chastity, which explores the power and freedom a woman can achieve in the disguise of a man.

This extraordinary collection sets the acknowledged genius of poems such as Blake's 'Tyger', Coleridge's 'Khubla Khan' and Shelley's 'Ozymandias' alongside verse from less familiar figures and women poets such as Charlotte Smith and Mary Robinson. We also see familiar poets in an unaccustomed light, as Blake, Wordsworth and Shelley demonstrate their comic skills, while Coleridge, Keats and Clare explore the Gothic and surreal.

Book The Awakening and Selected Short Stories

Download or read book The Awakening and Selected Short Stories written by Kate Chopin and published by Aegitas. This book was released on 2024-05-17 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Awakening and Selected Short Stories by Kate Chopin is a seminal work of feminist literature that explores the nuances of women's independence, identity, and self-discovery. Published in 1899, the novel chronicles the life of Edna Pontellier, a wife and mother who embarks on a journey of self-exploration, challenging the societal norms and expectations of her time. The novel is set in the Creole society of Grand Isle, Louisiana, where Edna spends her summers with her husband and two children. The story unfolds as Edna begins to question her role as a wife and mother, feeling increasingly suffocated by the societal constraints placed upon her. She develops a strong desire for personal freedom and independence, which leads her to explore her sexuality and artistic passions. Chopin's writing is characterized by its vivid descriptions of the natural world, which often serve as a metaphor for Edna's emotional state. The author also employs a unique narrative style, shifting between third-person omniscient and limited perspectives, allowing the reader to gain a deep understanding of Edna's inner thoughts and feelings. The novel's themes include the exploration of women's sexuality, the role of marriage and motherhood, and the concept of self-discovery. Chopin presents a nuanced and complex portrayal of these themes, challenging the traditional views of her time and offering a progressive perspective on women's rights and independence. "The Awakening" faced significant criticism upon its initial publication due to its controversial themes and frank depiction of female sexuality. However, it has since been recognized as a classic work of feminist literature, influencing countless authors and inspiring generations of readers. The selected short stories in this collection further showcase Chopin's mastery of storytelling and her ability to explore complex themes with sensitivity and nuance. They offer poignant insights into the human condition, exploring themes of freedom, identity, and societal expectations. In conclusion, "The Awakening and Selected Short Stories" by Kate Chopin is a powerful and thought-provoking work of literature that offers a nuanced exploration of women's independence, identity, and self-discovery. Its themes and messages continue to resonate with readers today, making it a timeless classic that is well worth reading and studying.

Book The Lais of Marie De France

Download or read book The Lais of Marie De France written by Marie France and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2011-10-27 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marie de France (fl. late twelfth century) is the earliest known French woman poet and her lais - stories in verse based on Breton tales of chivalry and romance - are among the finest of the genre. Recounting the trials and tribulations of lovers, the lais inhabit a powerfully realized world where very real human protagonists act out their lives against fairy-tale elements of magical beings, potions and beasts. De France takes a subtle and complex view of courtly love, whether telling the story of the knight who betrays his fairy mistress or describing the noblewoman who embroiders her sad tale on the shroud for a nightingale killed by a jealous and suspicious husband.

Book Reading Today

Download or read book Reading Today written by Heta Pyrhönen and published by UCL Press. This book was released on 2018-01-15 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New technologies are changing our reading habits. Laptops, e-readers, tablets and other handheld devices supply new platforms for reading, and we must learn to manage them by scrolling, clicking or tapping. Reading Today places reading in current literary and cultural contexts in order to analyse how these contexts challenge our conceptions of who reads, what reading is, how we read, where we read, and for what purposes – and then responds to the questions this analysis raises. Is our reading experience becoming a ‘flat’ one? And does reading in a media environment favour quick reading? Alongside these questions, the contributors unpack emerging strategies of reading. They consider, for example, how paying attention to readers’ emotional reactions as an indispensable component of reading affects our conception of the reading process. Other chapters consider how reading can be explored through such topics as experimental literature, the contemporary encyclopedic novel and the healing power of books.
