Book excerpt: The purpose of this project was to develop parent workshops for Spanish speaking parents of students in Special Education. A review of the research indicates that Spanish speaking parents do not actively participate in the Individual Education Plans (IEP) of their children. This project focused on the development of parent workshops developed in Spanish for presentation to parents and English for the purposes of this project. The workshops were designed to inform parents about the IEP process, their right to question the process and solicit help from a Spanish speaking Special Education Teacher. The workshops developed for this project will be helpful in informing and empowering Spanish speaking parents to participate in their students' IEP process because they will have been given the questions to ask, the language to use and the understanding that it is their right to pursue the very best education for their children.

Book Changes Experienced by Latino Parents of Adolescents Through a Parent Training Program in an Urban Community

Download or read book Changes Experienced by Latino Parents of Adolescents Through a Parent Training Program in an Urban Community written by Julie Kim Jhun and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author presented results from a qualitative study of the changes experienced by 13 Latino parents of adolescents in East Los Angeles participating in a parent training program. Data collected from classroom observations, focus groups, and interviews with the instructors of the parent training program were triangulated to determine that the skills of showing love and affection and improved communication through listening instead of yelling were changes most commonly reported by parent participants positively affecting the parent-child relationship. Barriers to implementing these skills included parents' assumptions regarding the parent-child relationship, culture and upbringing, and fear of unknown outcomes. Despite these barriers, there is substantial overlap between the goals of the program and the changes reported by parents. Instructors tailored the parent training curriculum to the target demographic by engaging parents in roleplaying and by sharing personal stories and examples to provide context.

Book A Parent Training Program for Caucasian and Latino Parents of Children with Developmental Delays Or Behavioral Difficulties

Download or read book A Parent Training Program for Caucasian and Latino Parents of Children with Developmental Delays Or Behavioral Difficulties written by Vanessa L. Davidson and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Parenting a child diagnosed with a chronic illness is a stressful and challenging endeavor. Parent training programs have proven efficacious in helping parents increase the amount of positive parent-child interactions, decrease stress level, and increase their sense of social support (Baydar, Reid, & Webster-Stratton, 2003); Hartman, Stage, & Webster-Stratton, 2003; Myers et al., 1992). Many programs are available but lack empirical support, and it would be helpful to have reliable and valid data regarding the effectiveness of these programs. An open trial, using a pre-test/post-test design, evaluated the effectiveness of a parent training program across four domains (parents' perceptions, self-reported discipline practices, parental stress, and social support). Thirty Spanish- and English-speaking parents of a child recently diagnosed with a developmental delay or behavioral difficulty attended a four-week parent training program at an urban Midwestern pediatric development center. This study did not yield significant findings in any of the domains of interest. Furthermore, no significant differences were found in any of the areas of interest between English- and Spanish-speaking parents. Though not significant, parental stress levels were reported to be higher after program completion than they were before. Despite these findings, all parents assessed after program completion reported being satisfied to some degree with the program. One possible explanation for the findings include the possibility that those parents with higher stress levels were more prone to complete the program, thereby yielding post-program stress levels that were higher than the pre-program stress levels. An additional possibility is that program participation contributed to higher parental stress levels as a result of increased knowledge and awareness of their children's diagnosis and prognosis. Several methodological aspects of this study could be strengthened in the future studies of a similar nature in order to increase the validity and reliability of the findings.

Book In home Training for Latino Parents of Children with Special Needs

Download or read book In home Training for Latino Parents of Children with Special Needs written by Eva Maritza Solano and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis explores a variety of intervention strategies that can be used in the home with children with special needs who are demonstrating challenging behaviors due to the lack of functional communication, with a focus on children of Latino parents. Research regarding positive behavior support, functional behavior training, parental involvement, and strategies to support families at home have been reviewed. A case study was conducted with a family raising a preschool age boy who was receiving special education services due to an eligibility of developmental delay. The researcher observed the family's interactions, conducted home visits, and worked with the family by coaching and modeling play and communication strategies in their home environment. The data revealed that in-home parent training had positive effects on the family relationship and interaction with the child, leading to improved communication and behavior in a variety of settings.

Book excerpt: From a distinguished psychologist, mother, and Latina, Parenting with Pride Latino Style offers the first bicultural child-rearing approach for Latino parents. This groundbreaking book supports families in raising their children with time-honored Hispanic values while incorporating the best that North America has to offer. Dr. Vazquez's unique parenting method, the New Traditionalism (El Nuevo Tradicionalismo), preserves classic Latino ideals, such as pride, family loyalty, and courtesy, while helping parents revise their traditional authoritarian child-rearing style, blending the best of Latino and American cultures and dramatically reducing cultural conflict in the family. Her seven steps to successful parenting are grounded in the acronym ORGULLO ("pride"): O: Organize your feelings R: Respect your child's feelings G: Guide and teach your child; do not dictate U: Update your media awareness often L: Love your child for who she or he is L: Listen to your child O: Open the communication channels -- and keep them open Self-assessments and reflection exercises help parents resolve the dilemmas produced when two cultures combine. Detailed examples show how to use these methods immediately in daily life -- from family relationships to children's friendships to school issues. Clear, compassionate, and based on Dr. Vazquez's personal experience as a Latina professional and parent, Parenting with Pride Latino Style is the one book that enables contemporary Latino parents to pass on their rich cultural heritage to their children -- and to future generations as well.

Book River City Youth Foundation s TechComunidad

Download or read book River City Youth Foundation s TechComunidad written by Juana Ibarra Gonzalez and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report is about my own experiences with the digital divide in Austin and River City Youth Foundation’s TechComunidad, a Latino parent education and technology training program, which takes place in Dove Springs. The paper explains the historical context of Austin’s segregation and how problematic Austin became as a Technopolis. I include information on how non–profit organizations, such as Austin Interfaith, bring up the agenda items that affect children that live in poverty. The report speaks of the social and digital divide that is widening Austin. There is RCYF’s TechComunidad program and Latino parents who have “funds of knowledge,” which is knowledge that can only come from child’s home. Latino parents may not be as familiar with the educational system in the U.S., but they are encouraging their children to obtain as much education as possible. I include the demographics of Dove Springs, which is a transitory immigrant community, and the elementary schools that feed into Mendez Middle School, where most River City Youth Foundation children attend. The project contains information on River City Youth Foundation and it’s goal to maintain the youth involved in positive activities that encourages further education or career planning. This report represents the study of how Latino parents engage with technology by learning to use Chromebooks in RCYF’s TechComunidad. The program trains parents to have mastery skills with email, search engines; and in addition, educates parents on how they can support their children in school. The report culminates with parent interviews and illustrates how TechComunidad can decrease the techno-divide for Latino parents’ children and can possibly be offered in other Austin areas as a tool to decrease the high school dropout rate.
