Book Latin Kingdom Of Jerusalem

Download or read book Latin Kingdom Of Jerusalem written by Claude Reignier Conder and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-01-11 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 2006. The Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem was the great lost realm of chivalry. Created by leaders of the First Crusade at the start of the 12th Century, it was a feudal state comprised of Antioch, Edessa, Tripoli, Jerusalem, Jaffa, Ashqelon Krak, Montreal, Sidin and Galilee that lasted for two hundred years, surrounded by the Muslims of Palestine and Syria. This classic volume presents a picture of the curious social conditions which resulted from the establishment of a feudal society amid Oriental surroundings and traces a growth of civilization and prosperity during the two centuries of Latin rule.

Book The Latin Church in the Crusader States

Download or read book The Latin Church in the Crusader States written by Bernard Hamilton and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first major work on the history of the secular church in the Frankish states of Syria and the Holy Land - a subject which has not hitherto attracted the interest of ecclesiastical historians. The present book has been written to fill this important gap in crusader studies. It deals with the period stretching from the establishment of a Latin hierarchy after the First Crusade to the final conquest by the Mamluks in 1291. Dr Hamilton examines the development of the Church in the Patriarchates of Jerusalem and Antioch and its organisation from the parish level upwards. Two chapters are devoted to a study of its sources of income and the financial problems that arose after the Battle of Hattin through the thirteenth century. Particular attention is paid to the relations between the Latin and the Eastern Churches. The author documents the unequal treatment given to the Orthodox and to the separated Churches, and traces the course of the various attempts at church union. In his conclusion he makes an overall assessment of the spiritual achievments of the Church during this period and the extent to which it justified the first crusaders' ideals.

Book Encounter between Enemies Captivity and Ransom in the Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem

Download or read book Encounter between Enemies Captivity and Ransom in the Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem written by Yvonne Friedman and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-10-25 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fascinating study examines the customs, legal codes, and socioeconomic mechanisms that evolved from the initial Christian-Muslim encounter on Crusader battlefields. It pinpoints changes in European mentality, and conduct of war, tracing acculturation processes in Frankish society in the Levant. These changes emerged from the need to redeem captives, making payment of ransom to the infidel conceivable and acceptable. The book pays special attention to the story of the vanquished, to the situation of women, to the behavior of the Military Orders toward captives, and to the image of the captive in Crusader literature, in the context of making war and peace.

Book Naming Patterns in the Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem

Download or read book Naming Patterns in the Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem written by Iris Shagrir and published by Iris Shagrir. This book was released on 2003 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anthroponymy, or the study of personal names, is used here to investigate the extent to which Frankish settlers in the Latin kingdom of Jerusalem assimilated the practices and traditions of their hosts. Data from legal and commercial documents has been used to create a database of 6,200 individual names from the years 1099 to 1291 which the author analyses for any trends and patterns that may relate to social change. Comparing evidence with contemporary Catholic Europe, Shagrir finds that the Franks neither adopted local ways nor maintained their own traditions, but changes in naming reflected a unique set of characteristics influenced by eastern contacts, cults and customs and a greater awareness of religious fervour.

Book Kings and Lords in the Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem

Download or read book Kings and Lords in the Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem written by Hans Eberhard Mayer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 1994 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the present volume, the third selection of his articles to be published, Professor Mayer deals with questions of royal authority and power in the Crusader kingdom of Jerusalem. He first examines the relationship between the monarchy and the Church, questions of royal succession, and aspects of the royal chancery, but is also concerned to trace the king's efforts to create a new clientele of loyal vassals. The second group of studies reverses the perspective, and looks at the origins and development of the lordships of the kingdom, notably at the important county of Jaffa and at the role of the Ibelin, the most significant family in the land.

Book The Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem

Download or read book The Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem written by C. r. Conder and published by . This book was released on 2015-12-30 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Claude Reignier Conder, 1848 to 1910, was a British soldier, explorer and antiquarian.Conder was educated at University College London and the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich. He became a lieutenant in the Corps of Royal Engineers in 1870. He carried out survey work in Palestine in 1872-1874, latterly in conjunction with Lt. Kitchener, later Lord Kitchener, whom he had met at school, and was seconded to the Palestine Exploration Fund from 1875 to 1878 and again in 1881 and 1882, when he was promoted captain. He retired with the rank of colonel in 1904.The Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem is a history of the Crusader kingdom from its foundation in 1099, during the dramatic First Crusade, to its end in 1291. Conder describes it's notable characters, enemies, institutions, military establishment, economy, laws, and its many campaigns and battles. The object of this volume is, however, not so much to relate the history of Crusades, as to present a picture of the curious social conditions which resulted from the establishment of a feudal society amid Oriental surroundings, and to trace the growth of civilisation and prosperity during the two centuries of Latin rule. The period is one of the most interesting in history, and the results of Frank colonisation in Palestine were far-reaching and important.
