Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Latin Grammar IN this short Grammar of the Latin Accidence I have endeavoured to arrange the paradigms in such a way as to give some hint of the connection between the different forms, Without departing from the traditional number and order of Declensions and Conjugations. In the arrange ment by stems I have closely followed Mr. Roby, even in the somewhat uncertain distinction between consonant and i-stems in the Third Declension pf Nouns, feeling that some division is necessary, and that his is more satisfactory than any other. Book A Latin Grammar for Schools Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Latin Grammar for Schools Classic Reprint written by Henry John Roby and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-09 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Latin Grammar for Schools This book is in the main an abridgment for school purposes of my larger Latin Grammar, but the abridgment is very unequal, some parts being reproduced with slight omissions, some parts being largely reduced, and others again being rewritten. Under the last head fall especially chaps. I and ii, of Book I, and chap. Vi of Book 11. Of the last-named chapter, part, particularly I 32, contains an analysis which is, I think, new and interesting. I have added an English trans lation of the Examples in almost the whole of the Syntax. It will be found that in some cases I have given the ordinary English equivalent, whilst in others I have aimed rather at explaining the Latin construction. Three Appendices are new, viz. Those on Metre, on Grammatical and Rhetorical terms, and on Latin authors. Some changes in arrangement have been made (e. G. As regards degrees of comparison, and Numerals) to suit ordinary usage. Book Concise Latin Grammar Classic Reprint

Download or read book Concise Latin Grammar Classic Reprint written by Benjamin L. D'Ooge and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-21 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Concise Latin Grammar The purpose of the author in preparing this book has been to provide, in as concise a form as possible, a Latin grammar which should be of equal service to the high-school pupil and to the college undergraduate. 'to meet the needs of the former the fundamental and essential facts of the language have been stated as simply as possible and have been given due prominence on an Open page. Statements of secondary importance appear in smaller type and all material that would be confusing to the beginner has been relegated to footnotes, and these have been reduced to a minimum. At the same time the scope of the book is such as to include all that is needed for translation of authors usually read in college. There is an obvious advantage to the student in using the same grammar throughout his Latin course. The needs of the student have been made the guiding principle in the treatment of the examples. These are numerous and have been taken by preference from the portions of Caesar, Cicero, and Vergil read in' secondary schools. Furthermore, they have been simplified when too difficult for ready comprehension, without, however, destroying their validity. In the matter of grammatical nomenclature a conservative attitude has been taken, but such of the new terms have been adopted as seem likely to win general acceptance. Download or read book Latin Grammar for Schools and Colleges Classic Reprint written by Albert Harkness and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-27 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Latin Grammar for Schools and Colleges Tun work now offered to the public had its origin in a desire to promote the cause of Classical study. It has long been the Opinion of the author, in common with numerous classical teachers, that the subject of Latin Grammar, often regarded as dry and dif ficult, may be presented to the learner in a form at once simple, attractive, and philosophical. It is the aim of this manual to aid the instructor in the attainment of this most desirable end. That the present is a favorable time for the production of a Latin Grammar scarcely admits of a doubt. Never before were there such facilities for the work. The last quarter of a century has formed an epoch in the study of language and in the methods of instruction. During this period some of the most gifted minds of Germany have been gathering the choicest treasures in the field of philology, while others have been equally successful in devising improved methods of instruction. In our own country too, the more enterprising teachers have caught the spirit of improvement, and are calling loudly for a better method than has hitherto pre vailed in classical study. The present work has been prepared in view of these facts. To explain its general plan, the author begs leave to specify the following points. Download or read book The Essentials of Latin Grammar Classic Reprint written by Francis Adelbert Blackburn and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-20 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Essentials of Latin Grammar It is proper to add that I put forth no claim to original research, my object being to make a school-book. If the plan and arrangement do not justify its publication, there is nothing else in it to do so. I have not tried, moreover, in seeking for the best and clearest arrange ment, to avoid what has been already used by others. I have freely taken from every source, whatever, in the way of expression or classi fication, seemed good for my purpose.' The teacher who is familiar with the various Latin grammars issued within the last twenty years, will find much taken directly from them; more than I can acknowl edge in detail. On questions of fact and usage, I have depended almost entirely on Ro'by's Latin Grammar, and have drawn freely on his citations from Latin authors, for illustrative examples. His full collections of illustrative words and sentences have saved a great amount of labor that would have been needed to find appropriate illustrations.
