Book Canada s Past and Future in Latin America

Download or read book Canada s Past and Future in Latin America written by Pablo Heidrich and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2022-04-27 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many historians and political scientists argue that ties between Canada and Latin America have been weak and intermittent because of lack of mutual interest and common objectives. Has this record of diverging paths changed as Canada has attempted to expand its economic and diplomatic ties with the region? Has Canada become an imperialist power? Canada’s Past and Future in Latin America investigates the historical origins of and more recent developments in Canadian foreign policy in the region. It offers a detailed evaluation of the Harper and Trudeau governments’ approaches to Latin America, touching on political diplomacy, bilateral development cooperation, and civil society initiatives. Leading scholars of Canada–Latin America relations offer insights from unique perspectives on a range of issues, such as the impact of Canadian mining investment, security relations, democracy promotion, and the changing nature of Latin American migration to Canada. Drawing on archival research, field interviews, and primary sources, Canada’s Past and Future in Latin America advances our understanding of Canadian engagement with the region and evaluates options for building stronger ties in the future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rooted in thousands of pages of Access to Information documents and dozens of interviews carried out throughout Latin America, Blood of Extraction examines the increasing presence of Canadian mining companies in Latin America and the environmental and human rights abuses that have occurred as a result. By following the money, Gordon and Webber illustrate the myriad ways Canadian-based multinational corporations, backed by the Canadian state, have developed extensive economic interests in Latin America over the last two decades at the expense of Latin American people and the environment. Latin American communities affected by Canadian resource extraction are now organized into hundreds of opposition movements, from Mexico to Argentina, and the authors illustrate the strategies used by the Canadian state to silence this resistance and advance corporate interests.

Book The Foreign Powers in Latin America

Download or read book The Foreign Powers in Latin America written by Herbert Goldhamer and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-03-08 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our preoccupation with the role of the United States in Latin American affairs has obscured the important part played by Canada and the nonhemispheric nations, e.g., the Soviet Union, Japan, and Israel. To compensate for this neglect, Herbert Goldhamer examines the interests and activities of the foreign powers in Latin America, focusing on the decade of the Alliance for Progress (1961-1971). Adopting an analytical and topical rather than a country-by-country approach, Mr. Goldhamer presents a comparative picture of the foreign powers' objectives (territorial, national security, economic, political) and of the means and resources (the migrant presence, affinities, advocacy, models, cultural programs, aid, diplomacy) they have used in pursuit of these ends. In conclusion he evaluates the extent to which they have achieved their ends and sets forth the principles of interstate behavior—and the lessons in statecraft these principles suggest—that seem to have been involved. Originally published in 1972.
