This book was released on 2014-11-05 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tracing the U.S. government's efforts to shape the armed forces of Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean from 2000 to 2014, this narrative concentrates on the Army but also discusses Air Force and naval forces, including the Marines and the Coast Guard. Police forces in those regions are also covered. Mexico's ongoing struggle with drug cartels is discussed extensively. Venezuela and Cuba receive considerable attention. This study is the first to examine in detail the armed forces of countries such as the Dominican Republic and Jamaica. Sections on Haiti and Panama, countries supposedly without armies, reveal the decisive role the U.S. has played in determining their military policies. The text weaves the histories of these armed forces into the broader context of the politics, economics and international relations in the region. A clear and brief introduction to the relations of Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean with the United States is provided.

Book Achieving Growth and Security in the Northern Triangle of Central America

Download or read book Achieving Growth and Security in the Northern Triangle of Central America written by Christina Perkins and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2016-12-14 with total page 47 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Northern Triangle of Latin America, consisting of El Salvador, Honduras, and Guatemala, has experienced overwhelming challenges to economic growth and development. Gang violence is the root of many of these challenges, and the cost of hiring security forces for individuals and businesses creates a significant tax on the economy of these three countries. Beyond this drain on the region’s finances, the Northern Triangle is considered one of the most dangerous places on the planet, excluding active war zones. The interrelated issues of violence, poverty, and slow economic growth have led to high rates of emigration from the region, such as during the summer of 2014 when thousands of unaccompanied minors entered the United States. This study examines all these issues and goes on to explore connections to the successes of Plan Colombia. Specifically, it considers the opportunity for a “Plan Colombia for the Northern Triangle” to generate long-term economic growth, personal safety, and political stability and accountability in the region.

Book Conspiracies and Conspiracy Theories in the Age of Trump

Download or read book Conspiracies and Conspiracy Theories in the Age of Trump written by Daniel C. Hellinger and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-11-25 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conspiracies and Conspiracy Theory in the Age of Trump stands out in the burgeoning literature on conspiracism with its call for political scientists to analyze not only “conspiracy theory” as political pathology but conspiracies themselves as political behavior symbiotically related to moral hazards and other forces unleashed by dark money, disinformation, changing technologies, and globalization. This new updated edition extends this analysis to the belief by many Americans that the 2020 election was stolen, resistance to social measures to counter the Covid epidemic, attempts by Trump and his allies to “stop the steal,” and the resulting mob insurrection at the Capitol on January 6. We likely will see both conspiracism and actual conspiracies play a greater role due to institutional decay in American politics. For this reason, political scientists need to analyse and theorize the role of conspiracies in politics—why they prosper and fail, how conspiracies may inflect political outcomes, what relationship they bear to social forces unleashed by great economic and social change.
