Book Structure and Properties of Atomic Nanoclusters

Download or read book Structure and Properties of Atomic Nanoclusters written by Julio A. Alonso and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2012 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Atomic clusters are aggregates of atoms containing a few to several thousand atoms. Due to the small size of these pieces of matter, the properties of atomic clusters in general are different from those of the corresponding material in the macroscopic bulk phase. This monograph presents the main developments of atomic clusters and the current status of the field. The book treats different types of clusters with very different properties: clusters in which the atoms or molecules are tied by weak van der Waals interactions, metallic clusters, clusters of ionic materials, and network clusters made of typical covalent elements. It includes methods of experimental cluster synthesis as well as the structural, electronic, thermodynamic and magnetic properties of clusters, covering both experiments and the theoretical work that has led to our present understanding of the different properties of clusters. The question of assembling nanoclusters to form solids with new properties is also considered. Having an adequate knowledge of the properties of clusters can be of great help to any scientist working with objects of nanometric size. On the other hand, nanoclusters are themselves potentially important in fields like catalysis and nanomedicine.

Book Fundamental Processes in Energetic Atomic Collisions

Download or read book Fundamental Processes in Energetic Atomic Collisions written by H.O. Lutz and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-02-27 with total page 675 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, the impact of new experimental techniques (e.g., nuclear physics methods, availability of high-intensity light sources) as well as an increasing demand for atomic collision data in other fields of physics (e.g., plasma physics, astrophysics, laser physics, surface physics, etc.) have stimulated a renewed, strong interest in atomic collision research. Due to the explosive development of the various fields, scientists often even have dif ficulty in keeping up with their own area of research; as a result, the overlap between different fields tends to remain rather limited. Instead of having access to the full knowledge accumulated in other fields, one uses only the small fraction which at the moment seems to be of immediate importance to one's own area of interest. Clearly, many fruitful and stimulating ideas are lost in this way, causing progress to be made much more slowly than it could be. Atomic col lision physics is no exception to this rule. Although it is of basic interest to many other areas, it is mostly regarded merely as a (nonetheless important) tool by which to gain additional information.

Book Physics and Chemistry of Small Clusters

Download or read book Physics and Chemistry of Small Clusters written by P. Jena and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 932 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent advances in experimental techniques now enable researchers to produce in a laboratory clusters of atoms of desired composition from any of the elements of the periodic table. This has created a new area of research into novel materials since clusters cannot be regarded either as a "large" molecule or as a fragment of the bulk. Both experimental and theoretical studies are revealing unusual properties that are not ob served in solid state environments. The structures of micro-clusters are found to be significantly distorted from the most symmetric arrangement, some even exhibiting pentagonal symmetry commonly found in icosahedric structures. The unusual stability of certain clusters, now described as "magic number species", shows striking similarities with the nuclear shell structure. The relative stabilities of clusters depend not only on the composition of the clusters but also on their charged states. The studies on spontaneous fragmentation of mUltiply charged clusters, commonly referred to as Coulomb explosion, illustrate the role of electronic bonding mechanisms on stability of clusters. The effect of foreign atoms on geometry and stability of clusters and the interaction of gas atoms with clusters are showing promise for an indepth understanding of chemisorption and catalysis. The magnetic and optical properties are dependent not only on cluster size but also on its geometry. These findings have the potential for aiding industry in the area of micro-electronics and catalysis.

Book Clustering Phenomena in Atoms and Nuclei

Download or read book Clustering Phenomena in Atoms and Nuclei written by Marten Brenner and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 588 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In these days of specialization it is important to bring together physicists working in diverse areas to exchange and share their ideas and excitement. This leads to cross-fertilization of ideas, and it enriches, as in biological systems, a specialized field with new strength, development and direction derived from another area. Although this might be an uncommon thing, it is an important step in our under standing of the physical world around us, which is, after aIl, the main purpose of physics. The seed for this conference was really sowed when one of us (MB) and Mr. Manngärd showed some a-scattering data at backward angles to FBM one summer about four years ago. That occasion led to a long research collaboration between the Abo Akademi physicists and other scientists in several countries. The actual idea to explore the possibility of holding a conference, however, crystallized in the summer of 1989 during a visit of FBM to Abo Akademi. The final decision to organize a conference was made after MB visited Profes sor Ben Mottelson in Copenhagen and Professor Anagnostatos in Athens. At this point it was recognized that there are similarities as weIl as differences between clustering phenomena in nuclei and systems consisting of atoms. It was therefore conjectured that it could be very stimulating to bring together these groups to exchange their ideas and to leam from each other's fields. A conference along these lines, we hoped, would contribute to an increased mutual understanding.

Book Advances in Atomic Molecular Collisions

Download or read book Advances in Atomic Molecular Collisions written by Lokesh C. Tribedi and published by Springer. This book was released on 2024-11-11 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book highlights the advances made in the field of atomic and molecular collisions both in the experimental and theoretical fronts. The study of the collision of charged particles with neutral target atoms or molecules started many decades ago. The charged particles mostly include electrons and fast heavy ions. This book discusses basic research in atomic molecular collision physics along with some of the important applications in other branches of physics and peripheral fields, such as plasma physics, radiobiology, astrophysics, nanosciences, antimatter physics, and surface science. The complexity of the target systems led to the need for more sophisticated experimental tools as well as advanced theoretical models. Since the last decade, a major focus has been to investigate the behavior of biomolecules (such as nucleobases) and water when irradiated with protons and heavy ions due its applications toward hadron therapy for cancer and radiobiology in general. The collisions with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons find applications toward astrochemistry that take place in the interstellar medium, solar wind as well as UV plasmonic devices. It has been proposed that the collective excitation in these molecules plays a major role in these applications. This book presents details about the advances made and the challenges faced in both experimental and theoretical front for studying the atomic collisions including these aspects. The book can be used as a reference for researchers, professionals, and also students. The recent advances in the sophisticated experimental tools for various types of experiments as well as the progress in the experimental methodologies are addressed along with the advancement in the theoretical front.
