Book Late Roman Bronze Coinage An attribution guide for poorly preserved coins

Download or read book Late Roman Bronze Coinage An attribution guide for poorly preserved coins written by Alisdair Menzies and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2014 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the course of the fourth century, millions of bronze coins were struck in the Roman Empire: an area extending from modern Britain to Egypt. The iconography present in these modest remnants of a distant past provides a fascinating insight into the realities, hopes and desires not only of the common people, but also of those who ruled over them. It is possible to identify with a remarkable degree of precision where, when and by whom coins of this period were struck. Traditional numismatic works rely heavily on a textual description and assume that one has a perfectly preserved specimen. Perhaps unsurprisingly, given their age, the majority of coins encountered are worn or incomplete, making identification difficult. However, as demonstrated by this work, a closer study of their composition and iconography yields more than enough information to identify all but the most poorly preserved specimens. Translation of Die spätrömische Kupferprägung - Ein Bestimmungsbuch für schlecht erhaltene Münzen (1961).

Book The Oxford Handbook of Greek and Roman Coinage

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Greek and Roman Coinage written by William E. Metcalf and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2012 with total page 707 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A large gap exists in the literature of ancient numismatics between general works intended for collectors and highly specialized studies addressed to numismatists. Indeed, there is hardly anything produced by knowledgeable numismatists that is easily accessible to the academic community at large or the interested lay reader. The Oxford Handbook of Greek and Roman Coinage will fill this gap by providing a systematic overview of the major coinages of the classical world. The Handbook begins with a general introduction by volume editor William E. Metcalf followed by an article establishing the history and role of scientific analysis in ancient numismatics. The subsequent thirty-two chapters, all written by an international group of distinguished scholars, cover a vast geography and chronology, beginning with the first evidence of coins in Western Asia Minor in the seventh century BCE and continuing up to the transformation of coinage at the end of the Roman Empire. In addition to providing the essential background and current research questions of each of the major coinages, the Handbook also includes articles on the application of numismatic evidence to the disciplines of archaeology, economic history, art history, and ancient history. With helpful appendices, a glossary of specialized terms, indices of mints, persons, and general topics, and nearly 900 illustrations, The Oxford Handbook of Greek and Roman Coinage will be an indispensable resource for scholars and students of the classical world, as well as a stimulating reference for collectors and interested lay readers.

Book An Examination of Roman Bronze Coin Distribution in the Western Empire A D 81 192

Download or read book An Examination of Roman Bronze Coin Distribution in the Western Empire A D 81 192 written by Andrew Stephen Hobley and published by British Archaeological Reports Oxford Limited. This book was released on 1998 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From AD 81-192 almost all bronze coinage circulation in the western Empire was minted in Rome. This study examines, in some detail, the distribution by date and by reverse types of the coins. It also looks at changes in the volume of production and at changes in the ratio of the different denominations. The reign of Trajan is pinpointed as the start of the rise of the Sestertius as the main bronze denomination. The supply of currency to each province is examined and differences are identified between civilian and military provinces.
