Download or read book Tropical Archaeobotany written by Jon G. Hather and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-28 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tropical Archaeobotany fills the need for a substantial reference work on plant remains from the tropics. It covers the examination, identification and interpretation of plant remains in tropical archaeology, whilst also the origins, spread, investigating the origins, spread, distribution and past use of tropical plants for food and other purposes. Recent technological developments in electron microscopy and biochemical and genetic research, as well as increased interest in tropical environments and ecosystems, are now beginning to realise the great potential for archaeobotanical research in the tropics. With the use of case studies from a wide range of areas, this volume details the latest macroscopic, microscopic and chemical techniques for the analysis of plant remains, from seeds, roots and tubers to epidermal fragments, pollen and phytoliths. Each chapter of Tropical Archaeobotany focuses on a different aspect of archaeobotanical research, using detailed examples from a varieety of tropical areas, though with its emphasis on techniques and methodology the book has a relevance beyond the regional scope of each chapter.
Download or read book The Coconut written by N Madhavan Nayar and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2016-12-27 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Coconut: Phylogeny, Origins, and Spread comprehensively covers the botany, phylogeny, origins, and spread of the coconut palm. The coconut is used primarily for its oil, fiber, and as an article of food, including its tender-nut water. Until the 1950s, coconut oil used to rank first in the world in production and international trade among all the vegetable oils. Since then, lower-cost sources such as the African oil palm, soybean, canola, and others have overtaken the coconut in oil production and trade. The coconut, Cocos nucifera L. (Arecaceae), is a dominant part of the littoral vegetation across the tropics. In addition to discussing the origins of the coconut and its use as a crop, the book covers the resurgence in the use of the coconut in food, pharmaceuticals, and nutraceuticals. - Presents the phylogeny, origins, and spread of the coconut - Explores the broad-based use of coconut from basic food source to nutraceuticals - Provides ethnobotanical information on cultivation and use of this tropical crop
Download or read book Geoenvironmental Mapping Methods Theory and Practice written by Peter T Bobrowsky and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2001-01-01 with total page 748 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text illustrates the range of environmental geoscience mapping presently carried out around the world. Specialists in several countries have contributed a number of subdisciplinary and thematic topics including volcanic hazards, landslides, dolines, tsunamis, radon potential, medical geology, rainfall erosion, engineering geology, borehole stratigraphy, lake sediment geochemistry, aggregate resources and remote sensing. The collection, analysis and interpretation of data by geologists, geographers and engineers typically involves the presentation of information in map form, which can range from black/white to colour, 2-D to 3-D and paper copy to digital format illustrations. This volume reaffirms the global need for mapping geoscientific data.

Download or read book Tropical Rainforest Responses to Climatic Change written by Mark B. Bush and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007 with total page 427 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goal of this book is to provide a current overview of the impacts of climate change on tropical forests, to investigate past, present, and future climatic influences on the ecosystems with the highest biodiversity on the planet.Tropical Rainforest Responses to Climatic Change will be the first book to examine how tropical rain forest ecology is altered by climate change, rather than simply seeing how plant communities were altered. Shifting the emphasis onto ecological processes e.g. how diversity is structured by climate and the subsequent impact on tropical forest ecology, provides the reader with a more comprehensive coverage. A major theme of this book that emerges progressively is the interaction between humans, climate and forest ecology. While numerous books have appeared dealing with forest fragmentation and conservation, none have explicitly explored the long term occupation of tropical systems, the influence of fire and the future climatic effects of deforestation, coupled with anthropogenic emissions. Incorporating modelling of past and future systems paves the way for a discussion of conservation from a climatic perspective, rather than the usual plea to stop logging.
