These high mountain regions have a profound influence on regional and global atmospheric circulation and they are therefore important for our understanding the dynamics of global environmental change. Changes in glaciation and hydrology in Tibet and the bordering mountains throughout the Quaternary likely altered the regional and global climate by affects such as changing albedos and associated atmospheric affects, and changing discharges of freshwater into the adjacent seas and oceans. Furthermore, glaciation in these regions strongly controls denudation and sediment transfer, which in turn influences tectonics, by processes such as denudational unloading. Yet, despite the importance of glaciation in this region for climate and landscape evolution studies, the timing and extent of Quaternary glaciation are still highly debated. This is partially due to the political and logistical inaccessibility of the region, and the lack of detailed modern geomorphic, sedimentologic and geochronologic studies. In recent years, however, studies of Tibet and the bordering mountains have increased, particularly as regions have become more assessable, and as remote sensing technologies and geomorphic, sedimentologic and geochronologic techniques have improved to enable accurate reconstructions of the former extent and timing of glaciation. * describes the geological and geomorphic framework of the regio * provides summaries of the glacial chronologies * major resource for research

Book excerpt: This book summarizes four decades of glacial-geomorphological field research in Central and High Asia in an attempt to draw a significant link between Quaternary science research and paleoclimatology. Based on the latest geomorphological findings, this study offers a large-scale reconstruction of the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) that in High Asia encompassed a total expanse of no less than three million km2, including the Central Tibetan plateau with 2.4 million km2. The author offers a complete reconstruction of the Late Glacial, Holocene, and Historical glacier advances as well as the successive Postglacial ablation stages extending to the present. Taken together, the findings presented here provide the first insights into a global-climatic impact of the Last Glacial Maximum in Central and High Asia with respect to the current interglacial stage. The comparative data analyses point to an inland glaciation at subtropical latitude covering an area larger than the Nordic inland glaciation in Greenland. These insights are facilitated by a methodological approach, unprecedented in modern Quaternary research, that combines high-quality panoramic photography with high-resolution satellite imagery. This combination of terrestrial and aerial perspectives enables scientists and readers alike to visualize the geomorphology of the landscape as a three-dimensional space. The author’s successful union of digital big data resources with classical geomorphological analysis offers an exciting new template for future research in Quaternary science and related fields.

The exceptionally high elevations of this low-latitude cryosphere presents a natural laboratory and archives to study climate–tectonics interactions as well as regional v. global climate influences. The existing base-level data on the Himalayan cryosphere are highly variable. Several climate fluctuations occurred during the late Quaternary (MIS1–MIS5, especially the last c. 100 ka), which led to the evolution of the Himalayan landscape. Detailed studies of these archives, along with those of the present cryosphere and related hydrosphere, are essential for understanding the controls on present and future hydrology of the glacial-fed mountain rivers. This volume, a follow-up of the XII International Symposium on Antarctic Earth Science, Goa (A SCAR symposium), provides new data from locales spread over the entire Himalaya region and from Tibet. It provides a glimpse of the late Quaternary cryosphere, as well as a discussion in the last section on sustainability in the context of geohazard mitigations as well as the hydrological budget.
