Book Late Neogene Planktonic Foraminifera of the Cibao Valley Dominican Republic Biostratigraphy and Paleoceanography

Download or read book Late Neogene Planktonic Foraminifera of the Cibao Valley Dominican Republic Biostratigraphy and Paleoceanography written by Brendan P. Lutz and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A dense sampling of planktonic foraminifers is described from the Cercado, Gurabo, and Mao Formations in the Cibao Valley, northern Dominican Republic. Assemblages are relatively consistent throughout, with Globigerinoides spp. dominating each section. The Cercado Formation is loosely confined to Zones N17 and N18 ([approximately]8.6-5.6 Ma). The Gurabo Formation spans Zones N18 and N19 ([approximately]5.6-4.5 Ma). The Mao Fm. is placed in Zone N19 ([approximately]4.5-3.6 Ma). The predominant genera ( Globigerinoides and Orbulina ) and species indicate a near-shore setting throughout the period of deposition with an episode of deepening after a lowstand at the Miocene/Pliocene boundary. Increasing abundances of Gs. sacculifer and Gs. ruber in conjunction with a decreasing abundance of G. bulloides suggests the onset of increasing salinity and diminishing primary productivity at [approximately]5.8 Ma. A sharp increase in Gs. sacculifer and Gs. ruber at [approximately]4.8 Ma implies a major intensification of Caribbean surface water salinity with a decline in primary productivity. The mechanism for this change is isolation of the Caribbean Ocean through enhanced closure of the Central American Seaway (CAS). Upwelling events are recorded in the upper Cercado Fm. ([approximately]6.1 Ma) and in the middle Mao Fm. ([approximately]4.2 Ma) by spikes in G. bulloides and Neogloboquadrina spp. respectively. The timing of increasing salinity and decreasing productivity ([approximately]4.8 Ma) and upwelling ([approximately]6.1and 4.2 Ma) generally corroborate previously suggested paleoceanographic changes related to the uplift of Panama. Oceanographic changes depicted by paleobiogeographic distributions suggest that shoaling along the Isthmus of Panama had implications in the Caribbean as early as 6.5 Ma. Major paleobiologic changes between [approximately]4.8 and 4.2 Ma likely represent the period of final closure of the CAS and the complete division between Pacific and Caribbean water masses.

Book Neogene Paleontology of the Northern Dominican Republic

Download or read book Neogene Paleontology of the Northern Dominican Republic written by Thomas R. Waller and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on approximately 25,000 specimens from the Miocene and Pliocene of the Cibao Valley, northern Dominican Republic, the bivalve family Propeamussiidae is represented by two genera and four species, including two new species, Cyclopecten acuminatus and C. zalaya; the family Pectinidae is represented by three subfamilies, six tribes, 18 genera, and 35 species. New taxa in the Pectinidae include six new genera ( Interchlamys , Chagrepecten , Gurabopecten , Paraleptopecten , Zamorapecten , and Antillipecten ), 15 new species ( Caribachlamys guayubinensis , C. jungi , Mimachlamys blowi , M. vokesorum , Palliolum ? cibaoense , Argopecten parathetidis , Chagrepecten paracactaceus , Gurabopecten uniplicatus , Lindapecten baitoaensis , L. paramuscosus , Euvola gurabensis , Zamorapecten maoensis , Antillipecten janicoensis , A. microlineatus , and A. quemadosensis) , one species in open nomenclature ( Paraleptopecten sp. a ), and one new subspecies ( Argopecten eccentricus lacabrensis ). In addition, a new name, Euvola jamaicensis , replaces the name E. barretti (Woodring, 1925). Lectotypes are designated for Cyclopecten guppyi (Dall, 1898) and Cryptopecten phrygium (Dall, 1886). Four of the genera (20%) and all but four of the species (90%) in the two families are extinct. Among the Pectinidae, 60% of the species but only 5% of the genera are endemic to the northern Dominican Republic. The high species endemism is possibly an artifact due to the absence in many other regions of precisely correlative strata as well as to differences in facies and sampling methods. Assemblages of the two families change composition going upward in stratigraphic sections measured along each major river, reflecting increasing depth of deposition, changing bottom conditions, and association with coral reefs or marine grasses and algae. Evolutionary changes within particular lineages help to resolve several previous biostratigraphic uncertainties and controversies, including the age of limestones on the Río Yaque del Norte and in the Guayubín area. Detailed study of these changes has also shed new light on the causes of dramatic faunal differences between stratigraphic sections on the Río Gurabo and Río Mao, separated by only 10 km.

Book Diversity and Community Structure of Marine Invertebrate Fossil Assemblages from the Neogene of the Dominican Republic

Download or read book Diversity and Community Structure of Marine Invertebrate Fossil Assemblages from the Neogene of the Dominican Republic written by Nina Abdollahian and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 45 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: River valleys in the Cibao Valley Basin, located in the northern Dominican Republic, expose three fossiliferous Neogene-aged strata (the Cercado, Gurabo, and Mao formations) that show evidence for shifting marine paleo-habitats. This study system is ideal for analyzing the relationships between environmental changes and faunal community stability through time. A new database was developed from the published literature to examine changing diversity patterns and to determine if the Cibao Valley communities exhibited stasis over a 3 My time span (6.5 Ma to 3.5 Ma) across shallow- to very deep-water environments. This database includes spatio-temporal occurrence data for 179 species of gastropods, bivalves, and corals. Analyses of diversity patterns reveal a high diversity of species in shallow- to deep-water depths, and a low diversity of species in very deep-water depths, as well as a low similarity of species through time across the different paleoenvironmental settings. An R-mode hierarchical cluster analysis illustrates two major clusters that were based mostly on the different paleoenvironments in which these species lived, while a Q-mode cluster analysis shows two major clusters, one consisting mostly of mollusk and the other of corals. Finally, a detrended correspondence analysis indicates higher species richness in intermediate-water depths and lower species richness in very deep-water depths. In total, these results indicate faunal instability though changing habitats across time in this study system.

Book Subsidence Analysis and Visualization

Download or read book Subsidence Analysis and Visualization written by Eun Young Lee and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-06-15 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive introduction to techniques for quantitative subsidence analysis and visualization with example applications. Subsidence analysis is an essential step to understand basin evolution through geologic time and space in the study of sediments and sedimentary basins. Quantifying techniques have been developed and applied in many basin research projects to evaluate total, tectonic and thermal subsidence. They are also a pre-requisite for basin evolution modelling. Recent studies have applied visualization techniques to understand regional subsidence contexts and trends, which confirmed that three-dimensional visualization of the basin subsidence is highly helpful to gain insight into basin evolution. In this book, we show how geoscience and computer science can be effectively combined in advanced basin analysis, especially in terms of basin subsidence. Each type of subsidence analysis is introduced with example applications. In particular we present a study of the Vienna basin using BasinVis, a MATLAB-based program for analyzing and visualizing basin subsidence. Given its breadth of coverage, this book will benefit students in undergraduate and postgraduate courses and provide helpful information for research projects and industry applications.
