Book German Express Steam Locomotives

Download or read book German Express Steam Locomotives written by Andreas Knipping and published by Pen and Sword Transport. This book was released on 2022-09-08 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, the author defines the express stem locomotive on the basis of the mandatory criterion of large drive wheels, and studies its evolution from around 1850 to the last refinements made around 1960, with many wrong turns and great successes along the way. This highly illustrated work features over 6,000 German express steam locomotives, including the oldest, the 1A1 and the Crampton; the largest, the Prussian S3; the fastest, the Reichsbahn-05; arguably the most successful, the Bavarian S3/6; and the most powerful, the Bundesbahn's oil-fired three-cylinder 01.

Book Great Western The German Pacific Locomotive

Download or read book Great Western The German Pacific Locomotive written by David Maidment and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2017-08-30 with total page 770 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The German Pacific Locomotive (Its Design and Development) is David Maidments fourth book in the series of Locomotive Profiles published by Pen & Sword. It is the first in the series to tackle an important range of overseas steam locomotives, the German pacific locomotives, which, with the Paris-Orleans pacific in France, were the first of that wheel layout in Europe and came to be the dominant type for express passenger work throughout Western Europe for the following fifty years, until displaced by diesel and electric traction. The German railways in the first two decades of the twentieth century were run principally as regional State railways, and two distinct styles of design developed, which were influenced by the natural terrain. In the south, in the mountainous foothills of the European Alps, four cylinder compound locomotives with comparatively small coupled wheels, most produced by the famous firm of Maffei in Munich, held sway from 1907 until the late 1930s, and in parts of Bavaria that were not yet electrified, even until the early 1960s. In the flatter lands of the north, Prussian 4-6-0s sufficed until Paul Wagners standard two cylinder simple pacifics came onto the scene in 1925, and were followed by the three cylinder streamlined pacifics at the start of the Second World War. After addressing the devastating damage to the German railways in the conflict, the book follows the modernization of the locomotive fleet in the postwar period until the elimination of steam in both East and West Germany in the mid-late 1970s. The book describes the design, construction and operation of the full range of pacifics that ran in both parts of Germany, and the large numbers of these locomotives that have been preserved, and is illustrated with over 180 black and white and 80 colour photos.

Book The Steam Engines of World War II in Europe

Download or read book The Steam Engines of World War II in Europe written by Phil Horton and published by Silver Link Publishing. This book was released on 2020-09-24 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few events had a greater influence on Europe's railways in the 20th century than the Second World War. As described in this book, thousands of steam engines were produced for the conflict by all sides. Although many were damaged during the war, most survived. Indeed, many of the British and American engines arrived in Europe too late and were immediately put into store. They and their German contemporaries were to form a mainstay of the peacetime railways of Europe and Great Britain, in many cases until the end of steam. Many other ex-war engines found employment on the Continent's heritage railways. The author first encountered these engines while trainspotting in the late 1950s. At the end of GB steam he extended his interest to the Continent. With the help of like-minded enthusiasts this book records his pursuit of these engines, when they were still at work and in preservation.
