Book excerpt: Beatrice had finally found people with whom she could spend boring nights. People who needed to get out, socialize, and have fun, just like her! She needed that. She needed kids like her who could teach her how to have a good time in a village that had nothing but woods, deserted streets, and a huge beach. Beatrice had grown fond of that beach. So close to home, that place could go from a paradise in the daytime where one could bathe in the sun, swim, breathe in fresh air, and relax to a play area at night where one could meet up with friends, express, and experiment. A gang like the one Beatrice was in would intimidate most, but fortunately for Beatrice, her cousin Claudette was part of it and a very good friend now. Besides, that gang had introduced her to the best part of her life now. This thing was better than world peace; this was sacred, and everyone in her gang was doing it: weed. Based on a true story, The Last Dance is about Beatrice Orchard: a teenager trapped in a dysfunctional family searching in her small conventional village back in the late 1960s for a way to forget her problems at home.

Book excerpt: Elegant, brutal, and profound—this magnificent debut captures the grit and glory of modern Hawai'i with breathtaking force and accuracy. In a stunning collection that announces the arrival of an incredible talent, Kristiana Kahakauwila travels the islands of Hawai'i, making the fabled place her own. Exploring the deep tensions between local and tourist, tradition and expectation, façade and authentic self, This Is Paradise provides an unforgettable portrait of life as it’s truly being lived on Maui, Oahu, Kaua'i and the Big Island. In the gut-punch of “Wanle,” a beautiful and tough young woman wants nothing more than to follow in her father’s footsteps as a legendary cockfighter. With striking versatility, the title story employs a chorus of voices—the women of Waikiki—to tell the tale of a young tourist drawn to the darker side of the city’s nightlife. “The Old Paniolo Way” limns the difficult nature of legacy and inheritance when a patriarch tries to settle the affairs of his farm before his death. Exquisitely written and bursting with sharply observed detail, Kahakauwila’s stories remind us of the powerful desire to belong, to put down roots, and to have a place to call home.

Book Dancing in Paradise Burning in Hell

Download or read book Dancing in Paradise Burning in Hell written by Trudy Irene Scee and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2016-05-01 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An often overlooked segment of Maine (and American) history is the story of women in the working class dance industries. Generally looked upon with a gasp of shock, burlesque and vaudeville dancing, and later taxi dancing and marathon dancing, were often the only way for women to survive (In taxi dancing, men paid women by the dance; while marathon dancing was a contest and women tried to outlast each other on the dance floor.) In turn-of-the-20th-century Maine, this new form of dancing was taking off, as it was elsewhere in the country. Historian Trudy Irene Scee explores the dance industries of Maine, how they were effected by national events, and how events in Maine effected national trends. She explores the difficulties women faced at that time and how they turned to new forms of entertainment to make money and pay for food and shelter. The focus of the book centers on the 1910s through the 1970s, but extends back into the 1800s, largely exploring the dance halls of the nineteenth century (be they saloons with hurdy-gurdy girls and the like, or dance halls with women performing the early forms of taxi- and belly dancing), and includes a chapter on belly dancing and other forms of dance entertainment in Maine in the 1980s to early 2000s. The newest form of dance—striptease dancing—is not be examined specifically, but is discussed as it pertains to the other dance forms. The book forms a unique look at one segment of Maine history and is a terrific addition to the literature on women’s issues.

Book Save the Last Dance

Download or read book Save the Last Dance written by Gerald Stern and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2009-11-24 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fifteenth collection by a celebrated poet whose “terrific, boisterous energy has never flagged” (Megan Harlan, San Francisco Chronicle). In Save the Last Dance, Gerald Stern gives us a stunning collection of his intimately personal—yet always universal, and always surprising—poems, rich with humor and insight. Shorter lyric poems in the first two parts continue the satirical and often redemptive vision of his last collection, Everything Is Burning, while never failing to carve out new emotional territory. In the third part, a long poem called "The Preacher," Stern takes the book of Ecclesiastes as a starting point for a meditation on loss, futility, and emptiness, represented here by the concept of a "hole" that resurfaces throughout.
