Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: together with the oncologist. For man, the laser must be moved out of the laboratory into the operating room. At present, its true position in the cancer therapy program is not yet known. The greatest attention is being directed to melanoma because of the tremendous energy adsorption capabilities of this heavily pigmented tumor. The next area of interest is in uncommon and com mon tumors of blood vessels. Here, too, the color factor influences to a signifi cant degree the absorption of the laser. Multiple accessible malignancies are treated also by the laser chiefly to compare the effect here with other modalities of therapy. Finally, as a type of therapy of desperation, lasers are used in the treatment of metastatic lesions. This then, is the brief introduction to the study of the current status of laser cancer research. Intense, difficult and cooperative research of the next few years will determine the role of the laser, an "optical knife", as an investi gative or therapeutic instrument. T able of Contents Chapter 1 Laser Instrumentation 1 Chapter 2 Laser Protection . 8 Chapter 3 The Laser Reaction in Tissue 13 Chapter 4 Color Qualities of Tissue in Relation to Laser Radiation 16 Chapter 5 Laser Radiation of Tissue Cultures .

The two main types of primary lung cancer, small cell and non-small cell are examined. The book's scope encompasses the three main types of non-small cell lung cancer: squamous cell carcinoma which is the commonest type of lung cancer and develops in the cells which line the airways; adenocarcinoma develops from the cells which produce mucus in the lining of the airways; and large cell carcinoma gets its name from the large, rounded cells that are seen when they are examined under the microscope. About 1 in 5 lung cancers are small cell, the rest non-small cell. Causes of lung cancer are primarily smoking, but include as well exposure to radon, asbestos, uranium, arsenic, and certain petroleum products. Research and new drugs are appearing with increasing frequency in this field.

Book Laser based Interventions for Improving Cancer Treatment

Download or read book Laser based Interventions for Improving Cancer Treatment written by Hieu Thi Minh Nguyen and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the United States, with an estimated 1.8 million new cases and 600,000 deaths annually in 2020. The biggest hurdle in cancer treatment is in completely eradicating all invasive tumor cells, which prevents cancer recurrence and enhances survival rate. Laser based interventions offer unique abilities to sense cancer cells and stimulate biological responses, both of which can be used to enhance cancer treatment. This thesis addresses two interventions aimed at improving cancer survival rate: 1) guidance of surgical resections and 2) systemic immune therapeutics. In the first part of the thesis, we applied non-destructive, fast, and label-free spectroscopy approaches for surgical guidance in skin cancer excision. Our study utilized multimodal spectroscopy with diffuse reflectance, Fluorescent, and Raman to assist tumor margin assessment. Our findings suggested that Raman spectroscopy provided the best diagnosis power among the three techniques and combined modality. We further studied the correlation between Raman measurements and its underlying tissue anatomy. We identified key diagnostic markers to accurately differentiate nonmelanoma cancer from normal skin, highlighting this method's potential in intraoperative tumor margin assessment. In the second part of the thesis, we used laser nanobubbles (bubbles generated around nanoparticles from irradiation with nanosecond pulsed laser radiation) as novel cancer therapy to trigger immunogenic cell death in breast cancer cells. We also applied a new approach to characterize laser nanobubbles' dynamics with optical coherence tomography. We demonstrated for the first time that laser nanobubbles provided a fast, highly specific therapy to eradicate tumor cells and elicit immunogenic cell death, highlighting this approach's potential as a candidate combination strategy for immunotherapy

Book Radiation Therapy for Skin Cancer

Download or read book Radiation Therapy for Skin Cancer written by Armand B Cognetta and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-13 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Photon Radiation Therapy for Skin Malignancies is a vital resource for dermatologists interested in radiation therapy, including the physics and biology behind treatment of skin cancers, as well as useful and pragmatic formulas and algorithms for evaluating and treating them. Dermatology has always been a field that overlaps multiple medical specialties and this book is no exception, with its focus on both dermatologists and radiation oncologists. It is estimated that between 2010 and 2020, the demand for radiation therapy will exceed the number of radiation oncologists practicing in the U.S. tenfold, which could profoundly affect the ability to provide patients with sufficient access to treatment. Photon Radiation Therapy for Skin Malignancies enhances the knowledge of dermatologists and radiation oncologists and presents them with the most up-to-date information regarding detection, delineation and depth determination of skin cancers, and appropriate biopsy techniques. In addition, the book also addresses radiation therapy of the skin and the skin’s reactions to radiation therapy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cancer is a group of different diseases (over 100) characterised by uncontrolled growth and spread of abnormal cells. Cancer can arise in many sites and behave differently depending on its organ of origin. If a cancer spreads (metastasises), the new tumour bears the same name as the original (primary) tumour. Significant progress has been made in recent years in the battle against cancer and in understanding its underlying biological mechanisms. This research progress has resulted in many experimental treatments and cures which establish hope for wide-spread cures. This book brings together important research from around the world in this frontal field.

Book The Genetics of Cancer

    Book Details:
  • Author : B.A. Ponder
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2012-12-06
  • ISBN : 9401106770
  • Pages : 222 pages

Download or read book The Genetics of Cancer written by B.A. Ponder and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has been recognized for almost 200 years that certain families seem to inherit cancer. It is only in the past decade, however, that molecular genetics and epidemiology have combined to define the role of inheritance in cancer more clearly, and to identify some of the genes involved. The causative genes can be tracked through cancer-prone families via genetic linkage and positional cloning. Several of the genes discovered have subsequently been proved to play critical roles in normal growth and development. There are also implications for the families themselves in terms of genetic testing with its attendant dilemmas, if it is not clear that useful action will result. The chapters in The Genetics of Cancer illustrate what has already been achieved and take a critical look at the future directions of this research and its potential clinical applications.

Book Cancers of the Head and Neck

  • Author : Charlotte Jacobs
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2012-12-06
  • ISBN : 1461320291

Download or read book Cancers of the Head and Neck written by Charlotte Jacobs and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cancers of the head and neck are among the most morbid of cancers. Convention al surgery and/or radiation therapy have a high cure rate for patients with early stage disease. However, despite optimal treatment with surgery and radiotherapy, patients with nodal spread or extensive local disease have a low cure rate. Even if a cancer is cured, a patient is often left with long-term debilities from the treatment and/or cancer. The major causes for decreased survival in patients with advanced head and neck cancer include local recurrence, distant metastases, and second primaries. All of these need to be addressed if one is to improve upon the curability of advanced disease. There are several new techniques, surgical and radiotherapeutic, designed to improve local control. Brachytherapy, or interstitial implantation, delivers a high dose of localized radiation with minimal normal tissue injury. This technique as discussed by Goffinet, may be even more efficacious when combined with hyperthermia. New, creative methods of radiation therapy delivery, such as the use of multiple fractions per day, as discussed by Parsons and Million, are also contributing to long-term local control. Laser therapy, discussed by Ossoff and Nemeroff, provides another tool for treatment of local disease.
