Book Laser Beam Combining Methods

Download or read book Laser Beam Combining Methods written by R. Andrew Motes and published by . This book was released on 2015-01-07 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are several reasons why combining laser beams makes sense: (1) some lasers, such as fiber lasers, have good beam quality but limited output power, (2) it allows for graceful degradation, (3) it makes the overall system more modular, and (4) it distributes the cooling load. This book summarizes and describes all the known methods for combining laser beams from low-power lasers into one high-power beam on target.

Book Coherent Laser Beam Combining

Download or read book Coherent Laser Beam Combining written by Arnaud Brignon and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-11-13 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Laser beam combining techniques allow increasing the power of lasers far beyond what it is possible to obtain from a single conventional laser. One step further, coherent beam combining (CBC) also helps to maintain the very unique properties of the laser emission with respect to its spectral and spatial properties. Such lasers are of major interest for many applications, including industrial, environmental, defense, and scientific applications. Recently, significant progress has beenmade in coherent beam combining lasers, with a total output power of 100 kW already achieved. Scaling analysis indicates that further increase of output power with excellent beam quality is feasible by using existing state-of-the-art lasers. Thus, the knowledge of coherent beam combining techniques will become crucial for the design of next-generation highpower lasers. The purpose of this book is to present the more recent concepts of coherent beam combining by world leader teams in the field.

Book Multi segment Coherent Beam Combining

Download or read book Multi segment Coherent Beam Combining written by and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scaling laser systems to large sizes for power beaming and other applications can sometimes be simplified by combing a number of smaller lasers. However, to fully utilize this scaling, coherent beam combination is necessary. This requires measuring and controlling each beam's pointing and phase relative to adjacent beams using an adaptive optical system. We have built a sub-scale brass-board to evaluate various methods for beam-combining. It includes a segmented adaptive optic and several different specialized wavefront sensors that are fabricated using diffractive optics methods. We have evaluated a number of different phasing algorithms, including hierarchical and matrix methods, and have demonstrated phasing of several elements. The system is currently extended to a large number of segments to evaluate various scaling methodologies.

Both of these major laser development directions continue to advance at a rapid pace with the sole purpose of achieving higher power while having excellent beam quality. The book begins by introducing the principles of diode lasers and methods for improving their brightness. Later chapters cover quantum cascade lasers, diode pumped high power lasers, high average power LMA fiber amplifiers, high-power fiber lasers, beam combinable kilowatt all-fiber amplifiers, and applications of 2 μm thulium fiber lasers and high-power GHz linewidth diode lasers. Written by a team of authors with experience in academia and industrial research and development, and brought together by an expert editor, this book will be of use to anyone interested in laser systems development at the laboratory or commercial scale.

Book Incoherent Combining of High Power Fiber Lasers for Directed Energy Applications

Download or read book Incoherent Combining of High Power Fiber Lasers for Directed Energy Applications written by and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High-power fiber lasers can be incoherently combined to form the basis of a directed high-energy laser system. This approach has a number of advantages over other beam combining methods and can result in compact, robust, low maintenance and long-lifetime high-energy laser systems. The first field demonstration of incoherent beam combining using kilowatt-class, single-mode fiber lasers over a kilometer propagation range is discussed. The experiment employed four fiber lasers and a beam director consisting of individually controlled steering mirrors. Propagation efficiencies greater than 90% at power levels of 3 kilowatts were demonstrated at a range greater than 1 kilometer.

Book A Nonlinear Optical Method for Combining High Power Laser Beams in Gases Or Plasmas

Download or read book A Nonlinear Optical Method for Combining High Power Laser Beams in Gases Or Plasmas written by Jay S. Chivian and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 93 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose is to investigate concepts for laser controlled optics via near resonance nonlinear dispersion, so that a laser induced index grating which is capable of high power laser beam combining might be produced and demonstrated. The principle of coherent addition of several input laser beams into one output beam had been demonstrated by the use of binary phase gratings. Properly shaped phase gratings had been etched onto a solid surface, establishing that multiple laser beams can be combined into a single beam with good conversion efficiency. For high power beams, the limited damage thresholds and maximum permissible thermal loading of solid state devices encouraged a search for more satisfactory working media. Gases and plasmas appeared to offer better solutions as working media. It had been predicted that two laser fields of differing wavelengths interacting with a collision-dominated atomic or molecular system with three effective energy levels could influence one another in a nonreciprocal manner; the creation of and interaction with a grating via near-resonance nonlinear dispersion thus should provide a method for low power laser beams to create a grating in which other beams combined to form a high power beam. Book High Power Fiber Lasers for Directed Energy Applications

Download or read book High Power Fiber Lasers for Directed Energy Applications written by and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High-power fiber lasers can be incoherently combined to form the basis of a high-energy laser system for directed-energy applications. These applications include tactical directed energy and power beaming. Incoherent combining of fiber lasers has a number of advantages over other laser beam combining methods. The incoherently combined laser system is relatively simple, highly efficient, compact, robust, low-maintenance, and reliable. In this article, we characterize the atmospheric propagation of incoherently combined, high optical quality laser beams and compare them with other types of laser beams and combining methods. For tactical directed-energy applications, we find that the propagation efficiency of incoherently combined high optical quality beams is near the theoretical upper limit for any laser system with the same beam director and total power. We present results of the first atmospheric propagation experiments using incoherently combined, kilowatt-class, single-mode fiber lasers. These NRL field experiments combined four fiber lasers using a beam director consisting of individually controlled steering mirrors. The transmitted continuous-wave power was 3 kW at a range of 1.2 km with a demonstrated propagation efficiency of tilde 90% in moderate atmospheric turbulence. The experimental results are found to be in good agreement with simulations and theory.

Book Method and Apparatus for Timing of Laser Beams in a Multiple Laser Beam Fusion System

Download or read book Method and Apparatus for Timing of Laser Beams in a Multiple Laser Beam Fusion System written by and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The optical path lengths of a plurality of comparison laser beams directed to impinge upon a common target from different directions are compared to that of a master laser beam by using an optical heterodyne interferometric detection technique. The technique consists of frequency shifting the master laser beam and combining the master beam with a first one of the comparison laser beams to produce a time-varying heterodyne interference pattern which is detected by a photo-detector to produce an AC electrical signal indicative of the difference in the optical path lengths of the two beams which were combined. The optical path length of this first comparison laser beam is adjusted to compensate for the detected difference in the optical path lengths of the two beams. The optical path lengths of all of the comparison laser beams are made equal to the optical path length of the master laser beam by repeating the optical path length adjustment process for each of the comparison laser beams. In this manner, the comparison laser beams are synchronized or timed to arrive at the target within .+-.1.times. 10.sup.-12 second of each other.
