Download or read book Adoption and Fosterage Practices in the Late Medieval and Modern Age written by Marina Garbellotti and published by Viella Libreria Editrice. This book was released on 2016-02-26T00:00:00+01:00 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years historical studies on adoption and fosterage have greatly advanced, very likely due to the importance that such practices have acquired in our own societies. Also in the past – not only during Roman or Late Antique periods, but throughout the Middle Ages and the Modern Era as well – a rather significant number of family units went through adoption and fosterage, experiencing these kinds of ties and relationships on the daily basis. Articles collected in this volume are aimed at analysing the various forms and methods by means of which the concept of “adoption” was interpreted and practiced during the Medieval and Early Modern periods, identifying especially relevant chronological points, examples from different regional and local contexts, reciprocal influences, and family relationships shaped by adoption.
Download or read book An Erotic Philology of Golden Age Spain written by Adrienne Laskier Martín and published by Vanderbilt University Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Early modern Spanish literature is remarkably rich in erotic texts that conventionally chaste critical traditions have willfully disregarded or repudiated as inferior or unworthy of study. Nonetheless, eroticism is a lightning rod for defining mentalities and social, intellectual, and literary history within the nascent field that the author calls erotic philology. An Erotic Philology of Golden Age Spain takes sexuality and eroticism out of the historical closet, placing them at the forefront of early modern humanistic studies. By utilizing theories of deviance, sexuality, and gender; the rhetoric of eroticism; and textual criticism, An Erotic Philology of Golden Age Spain historicizes and analyzes the particular ways in which classical Spanish writers assign symbolic meaning to non-normative sexual practices and their practitioners. It shows how prostitutes, homosexuals, transvestites, women warriors, and female tricksters were stigmatized and marginalized as part of an ordering principle in the law, society, and in literature. It is against these sexual outlaws that early modern orthodoxy establishes and identifies itself during the Golden Age of Spanish letters. These eroticized figures are recurring objects of contemplation and fascination for Spain's most canonical as well as lesser known writers of the period, in a variety of poetic, prose and dramatic genres. They ultimately reveal attitudes towards sexual behavior that are far more complex than was previously thought. An Erotic Philology of Golden Age Spain thoughtfully anatomizes the interdisciplinary systems at the heart of the varied sexual behaviors depicted in early modern Spanish literature.
Download or read book Family Law and Society in Europe from the Middle Ages to the Contemporary Era written by Maria Gigliola di Renzo Villata and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-08-04 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume addresses the study of family law and society in Europe, from medieval to contemporary ages. It examines the topic from a legal and social point of view. Furthermore, it investigates those aspects of the new family legal history that have not commonly been examined in depth by legal historians. The volume provides a new 'global' interpretative key of the development of family law in Europe. It presents essays about family and the Christian influence, family and criminal law, family and civil liability, filiation (legitimate, natural and adopted children), and family and children labour law. In addition, it explores specific topics related to marriage, such as the matrimonial property regime from a European comparative perspective, and impediments to marriage, such as bigamy. The book also addresses topics including family, society and European juridical science.

Download or read book Heritage and the Sea written by Ana Crespo Solana and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-01-01 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This two-volume set highlights the importance of Iberian shipbuilding in the centuries of the so-called first globalization (15th to 18th), in confluence with an unprecedented extension of ocean navigation and seafaring and a greater demand for natural resources (especially timber), mostly oak (Quercus spp.) and Pine (Pinus spp.). The chapters are framed in a multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary line of research that integrates history, Geographic Information Sciences, underwater archaeology, dendrochronology and wood provenance techniques. This line of research was developed during the ForSEAdiscovery project, which had a great impact in the academic and scientific world and brought together experts from Europe and America. The volumes deliver a state-of-the-art review of the latest lines of research related to Iberian maritime history and archaeology and their developing interdisciplinary interaction with dendroarchaeology. This synthesis combines an analysis of historical sources, the systematic study of wreck-remains and material culture related to Iberian seafaring from the 15th to the 18th centuries, and the application of earth sciences, including dendrochronology. The set can be used as a manual or work guide for experts and students, and will also be an interesting read for non-experts interested in the subject. Volume 1 focuses on the history and archaeology of seafaring and shipbuilding in the Iberian early modern world, complemented by case studies on timber trade and supply for shipbuilding, analysis of shipbuilding treatises, and the application of Geographic Information Systems and Databases (GIS) to the study of shipwrecks.

Download or read book Marriage and Friendship in Medieval Spain written by Marilyn Stone and published by Peter Lang Incorporated, International Academic Publishers. This book was released on 1990 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marriage and Friendship in Medieval Spain explores the themes of betrothal, marriage, parenthood and friendship in the famous Spanish law code compiled during the reign of Alfonso X (1252-1284). The often quoted Siete Partidas are the sources for hispanic law and for legal precedents in the United States today; yet, the text of Book Four concerning friendship, relations between men and women and relationships between parents and children has not been analyzed in depth before. Professor Stone uses this text to provide us with a glimpse into the social history of Medieval Spain. It is an essential building block for future studies and critical editions of Las Siete Partidas.
