Book excerpt: El objeto de estudio de esta Tesis Doctoral está centrado en análisis comparativo de las propuestas curriculares para la educación musical en Primaria prescritas por las distintas administraciones automáticas que conforman el sistema educativo español a partir de la implantación de la LOGSE en 1990. La metodología utilizada esta basada en el análisis de contenido. Se ha elaborado una construcción analítica cuyos datos son los términos musicales incluidos dentro del área de educación artística curriculum oficial de la educación primaria. Estos términos, que constituyen el vocabulario musical que aparece en las normativas, han sido analizados mediante una herramienta informática -elaborada especialmente para esta investigación- que llevan a cabo la frecuencia de aparición y sumariza los datos obtenidos, agrupándolo por categorías temáticas. El análisis de contenido se ha articulado conceptualmente partiendo de la premisa de que la música, como toda disciplina construida históricamente, utiliza un lenguaje temático específico para la transmisión de los conocimientos. Este lenguaje, a su vez, cuando se introduce en la práctica escolar adopta una serie de términos relacionados con el lenguaje específicamente educativo, que en el caso de la LOGSE responde a una concepción procesual/cognitiva del curriculum, centrada en el desarrollo de las capacidades de los niños. En la primera parte de la Tesis, denominada antecedentes, se explica la concepción de la educación musical en primaria según la LOGSE a partir de tres ámbitos: desde las aportaciones proporcionadas por las investigaciones en el campo educación musical en el último tercio del siglo XX, desde los presupuestos conceptuales de la educación musical según la propia ley, y desde la perspectiva histórica de la construcción de la música como disciplina escolar en el contexto europeo y español -a través de los modelos o códigos curriculares de la historia del pensamiento educativo y musical-. Este marco teórico, basado en el conocimiento de los principios sobre los que se define la música como disciplina escolar, es el fundamento de la selección de las categorías temáticas y de la construcción analítica. En la segunda parte, centrada en el estudio comparativo de las propuestas curriculares oficiales sobre la música en la educación primaria, se ha clasificado los datos en tres unidades temáticas. La primera, denominada modos de conocimiento musical -que agrupa a las categorías improvisación, interpretación, audición- constituye uno de componentes de curriculum musical en primaria según las investigaciones contemporáneas sobre educación musical. La segunda, contenidos musicales escolares -que incluye la expresión vocal, la expresión instrumental, el movimiento rítmico y danza, y el lenguaje musical- parte de la denominación de los bloques de contenido musical según el Real Decreto 1006 de enseñanzas mínimas. La tercera categoría, objetivos educativos adquiridos a través de la educación musical, reúne los términos relacionados con los objetivos educativos no específicamente musicales que se desarrollan mediante la educación musical. Se han tomado como unidades de análisis para la comparación de estas normativas los elementos del modelo curricular planteado por la LOGSE a través del Real Decreto estatal: objetivos generales de la Educación Primaria, y objetivos, bloques de contenido y evaluación específicos del área de música. Utilizando la técnica de análisis de contenido se han extraído los términos que conforman el vocabulario musical de los textos seleccionados. A estos términos se les ha calculado su frecuencia de aparición y clasificado en categorías temáticas anteriormente citadas. Estas frecuencias léxicas han ayudado a describir y analizar las características más significativas de las normativas estudiadas. De los resultados del análisis se han deducido las semejanzas y diferencias más significativas entre los currículos, así como los contenidos musicales a los que se concede mayor importancia en cada Comunidad Autónoma.

Many cannot find jobs, and those who do are often stuck in low-wage, dead-end positions. Meanwhile employers complain that high school graduates lack the necessary skills for today's workplace. Beyond College for All focuses on this crisis in the American labor market. Around the world, author James E. Rosenbaum finds, employers view high school graduates as valuable workers. Why not here? Rosenbaum reports on new studies of the interaction between employers and high schools in the United States. He concludes that each fails to communicate its needs to the other, leading to a predictable array of problems for young people in the years after graduation. High schools caught up in the college-for-all myth, provide little job advice or preparation, leading students to make unrealistic plans and hampering both students who do not go to college and those who start college but do not finish. Employers say they care about academic skills, but then do not consider grades when deciding whom to hire. Faced with few incentives to achieve, many students lapse into precisely the kinds of habits employers deplore, doing as little as possible in high school and developing poor attitudes. Rosenbaum contrasts the situation in the United States with that of two other industrialized nations-Japan and Germany-which have formal systems for aiding young people who are looking for employment. Virtually all Japanese high school graduates obtain work, and in Germany, eighteen-year-olds routinely hold responsible jobs. While the American system lacks such formal linkages, Rosenbaum uncovers an encouraging hidden system that helps many high school graduates find work. He shows that some American teachers, particularly vocational teachers, create informal networks with employers to guide students into the labor market.
