Book Nesselrode and the Russian Rapprochement with Britain 1836 1844

Download or read book Nesselrode and the Russian Rapprochement with Britain 1836 1844 written by Harold N. Ingle and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1976 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Count Karl Nesselrode, Russian foreign minister 1816-1856, was a controversial figure in the government of Nicholas I. The rapprochement with Britain, perhaps his finest achievement, was opposed at every step by Russians who regarded Britain as a rival. It was later condemned by tsarist historians as an example of the "cosmopolitan diplomacy" that weakened their country in competition with the Western powers. Soviet historians have followed their lead, asserting that it was against national interests. But Nesselrode did avoid war in a series of dangerous confrontations in Asia and the Near East, outmaneuvering opponents who wanted to meet Britain head-on, and he managed to extricate Russia from diplomatic isolation at the same time. Finally, he advanced bipartisanship in an agreement on the Eastern Question that led to the renewal of the European concert. He was working to extend the areas of cooperation, particularly by promoting freer trade and commerce, when his opponents more effectively countered his influence in the mid-1840s. - Jacket flap.

Book The Orient the Liberal Movement and the Eastern Crisis of 1839 41

Download or read book The Orient the Liberal Movement and the Eastern Crisis of 1839 41 written by P. E. Caquet and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-09-29 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the Eastern Crisis of 1839-41, closely examining the first instance of coordinated Western intervention in the Middle East during the modern era. Readers can explore topics such as how culture, domestic politics, and ideology shaped diplomacy in this landmark crisis, and the importance role played by religion - including, alongside mainstream Christianity, the Protestant Zionist movement. Highly informative and fully researched, this book suggests that the Eastern Crisis - and its associated diplomatic and military efforts - marked the first of many modern-era attempts to “improve” the region by moulding it in a Western image, providing scholars with a new perspective on this period of history.

Book The Cambridge Intellectual History of Byzantium

Download or read book The Cambridge Intellectual History of Byzantium written by Anthony Kaldellis and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2017-11-30 with total page 1438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings into being the field of Byzantine intellectual history. Shifting focus from the cultural, social, and economic study of Byzantium to the life and evolution of ideas in their context, it provides an authoritative history of intellectual endeavors from Late Antiquity to the fifteenth century. At its heart lie the transmission, transformation, and shifts of Hellenic, Christian, and Byzantine ideas and concepts as exemplified in diverse aspects of intellectual life, from philosophy, theology, and rhetoric to astrology, astronomy, and politics. Case studies introduce the major players in Byzantine intellectual life, and particular emphasis is placed on the reception of ancient thought and its significance for secular as well as religious modes of thinking and acting. New insights are offered regarding controversial, understudied, or promising topics of research, such as philosophy and medical thought in Byzantium, and intellectual exchanges with the Arab world.

Download or read book The Pasha written by Letitia W. Ufford and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2007-07-30 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With striking parallels to recent confrontations in Iraq, this is the story of the first Western international coalition to suppress an aggressive Middle Eastern ruler. The challenger was Mehemet Ali Pasha, called the founder of modern Egypt. Convinced that the Europeans would never be able to unite against him, he sought, with charm, brilliance and bravado, to create a powerful Muslim counterweight to the encroaching West. Drawing on research on three continents, this timely book takes the reader into the heart of a crisis as France, Great Britain, the Ottoman government and the Pasha of Egypt maneuver to defend their interests in the Eastern Mediterranean. Here are the passionate debates among French and British politicians as they struggle to control the Pasha without provoking a European war. Here are the battlefields--from the Euphrates to Beirut--on which Mehemet Ali's modernizing forces created the facts that fed the crisis. Here are the Sultan's ministers at Istanbul, buffeted by the threats of European ambassadors. And here, in confrontation, is the fascinating Mehemet Ali Pasha, in constant conversation with those seeking to deflect him from his dangerous ambition. As France began the fortification of Paris, as Prussia contemplated the French threat of a war on the Rhine and as British warships flooded the Mediterranean, Mehemet Ali sat cross-legged on his sumptuous divan, looking from his palace out over his beautiful fleet at anchor in the bay of Alexandria, and challenged the western world.
