Book Cosmology with Large scale Structure and Galaxy Flows

Download or read book Cosmology with Large scale Structure and Galaxy Flows written by Morag Scrimgeour and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: [Truncated abstract] Understanding the large-scale structure of the Universe is a crucial test of the standard model of cosmology, Lambda Cold Dark Matter (?CDM). This thesis presents two different tests of the properties of large-scale structure, to test assumptions and predictions of ?CDM. The first is a test of the large-scale homogeneity of the Universe, a key assumption of ?CDM that allows the Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) metric to be used as the description of space-time. Many aspects of ?CDM directly rely on the assumption that the large-scale Universe is homogeneous and isotropic, including the postulation of dark energy as the cause of the observed cosmic acceleration, and the use of statistical measurements such as the power spectrum to constrain properties of the Universe. Although the isotropy of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) at z ? 1100 provides good evidence for homogeneity, it is crucial the assumption be robustly tested at low-redshift using a 3D measurement.

Book The Large Scale Structures

Download or read book The Large Scale Structures written by Stéphane Ilić and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-06-13 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dark Energy and Dark Matter are among the greatest mysteries in modern cosmology. The present work explores in depth how large cosmic structures can help us unveil the nature of these components of the Universe. One the one hand, it focuses on a signature that Dark Energy imprints on the Cosmic Microwave Background through its impact on the time-evolution of gravitational potentials: the integrated Sachs-Wolfe (iSW) effect. Another cosmological background, the Cosmic Infrared Background, is considered for the first time in the study of the iSW effect and demonstrated to be a highly efficient and promising tracer. Changing the perspective on the problem, the use of superstructures for iSW detection is then extensively reviewed: using precise solutions to Einstein’s general relativity equations, the full iSW effect is computed, especially due to the cosmic voids predicted by the theory. Using measurements from the most recent data, it is subsequently shown how the iSW probes the solidity of the cosmological standard model. On the topic of Dark Matter, an original study is presented, showing that temperature measurements of the intergalactic medium shed light on the nature of Dark Matter particles, providing the tightest constraints on their decay properties.

Book Large Scale Structure Tracks And Traces Proceedings Of 12th Potsdam Cosmology Workshop

Download or read book Large Scale Structure Tracks And Traces Proceedings Of 12th Potsdam Cosmology Workshop written by Volker Muller and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1998-08-08 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding the largest physical structures in the universe is essential for the comprehension of the cosmos as a whole. We want to know how our world is formed, what it is made of and how it evolves.Galaxies, as the most visible constituents of the universe, are interesting probes for the cosmic time sequence. Their formation and development provides us with unique clues to the cosmic evolution. This is tightly connected with the hierarchical cosmic structure: groups and clusters of galaxies and their embedding into the large scale structure offer the opportunity to study the dependencies.Galaxy redshift surveys delineate most impressively a large cosmic web, which is composed of sheets and filaments. Grand simulations of the cosmic evolution complement these observations from the theoretical side and allow one quantify and compare various model universes.Quasar absorption line studies, gravitational lensing and even the X-ray background radiation provide important quantitative measures of the history of matter clustering. Finally, the microwave radiation traces very early structures, which are supposed to originate in the phase of inflationary expansion shortly after the big bang. This volume constituting the proceedings of the 12th Potsdam Cosmology Workshop, deals with the basic aspects of cosmological structure formation on the largest physical scales.

Book The Large scale Structure of the Universe

Download or read book The Large scale Structure of the Universe written by Phillip James Edwin Peebles and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Opinions on the large-scale structure of the early universe range widely from primeval chaos to a well-ordered mass distribution. P.J.E. Peebles argues that the evolution proceeded from a nearly uniform initial state to a progressively more irregular and clumpy universe. The discussion centers on the largest known structures, the clusters of galaxies, the empirical evidence of the nature of the clustering, and the theories of how the clustering evolves in an expanding universe. In Chapter One the author provides an historical introduction to the subject. Chapter Two contains a survey of methods used to deal with the Newtonian approximation to the theory of the evolution of the mass distribution. Recent progress in the use of statistical measures of the clustering is described in Chapter Three. Chapters Four and Five return to techniques for dealing with cosmic evolution, in the statistical measures of clustering and under general relativity theory. Lastly, in Chapter Six Professor Peebles assesses the progress in attempts to link theory and observation to arrive at a well established physical picture of the nature and evolution of the universe.

Book The Primordial Density Perturbation

Download or read book The Primordial Density Perturbation written by David H. Lyth and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2009-06-11 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The origin and evolution of the primordial perturbation is the key to understanding structure formation in the earliest stages of the Universe. It carries clues to the types of physical phenomena active in that extreme high-density environment. Through its evolution, generating first the observed cosmic microwave background anisotropies and later the distribution of galaxies and dark matter in the Universe, it probes the properties and dynamics of the present Universe. This graduate-level textbook gives a thorough account of theoretical cosmology and perturbations in the early Universe, describing their observational consequences and showing how to relate such observations to primordial physical processes, particularly cosmological inflation. With ambitious observational programmes complementing ever-increasing sophistication in theoretical modelling, cosmological studies will remain at the cutting edge of astrophysical studies for the foreseeable future.

Book Perturbation Theories in Astrophysics

Download or read book Perturbation Theories in Astrophysics written by Xiao Fang (Ph. D. in physics) and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the LambdaCDM model seems to be a very successful model for our observed Universe, puzzles remain puzzling. Current and future cosmology analyses aim to test the LambdaCDM model, understand the nature of dark matter and dark energy, and learn about the beginning of the Universe. All of these require better modeling of cosmological probes. In this thesis, I focus on improving cosmology analyses in different ways. On the one hand, ongoing and upcoming large-scale structure surveys provide the opportunity to measure the properties of the Universe to unprecedented precision. On the other hand, compact objects, responsible for some of the most violent phenomena observable on cosmological scales, play a unique role in determining the expansion history of the Universe. I present our work on developing accurate and extremely efficient tools for analyzing the next generation cosmology datasets, and characterizing systematic uncertainties associated with using compact objects as cosmological probes.

Book The Large scale Structure of the Universe

Download or read book The Large scale Structure of the Universe written by Yookyung Noh and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The usefulness of large-scale structure as a probe of cosmology and structure formation is increasing as large deep surveys in multi-wavelength bands are becoming possible. The observational analysis of large-scale structure guided by large volume numerical simulations are beginning to offer us complementary information and crosschecks of cosmological parameters estimated from the anisotropies in Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) radiation. Understanding structure formation and evolution and even galaxy formation history is also being aided by observations of different redshift snapshots of the Universe, using various tracers of large-scale structure. This dissertation work covers aspects of large-scale structure from the baryon acoustic oscillation scale, to that of large scale filaments and galaxy clusters. First, I discuss a large- scale structure use for high precision cosmology. I investigate the reconstruction of Baryon Acoustic Oscillation (BAO) peak within the context of Lagrangian perturbation theory, testing its validity in a large suite of cosmological volume N-body simulations. Then I consider galaxy clusters and the large scale filaments surrounding them in a high resolution N-body simulation. I investigate the geometrical properties of galaxy cluster neighborhoods, focusing on the filaments connected to clusters. Using mock observations of galaxy clusters, I explore the the correlations of scatter in galaxy cluster mass estimates from multi-wavelength observations and different measurement techniques. I also examine the sources of the correlated scatter by considering the intrinsic and environmental properties of clusters.
