This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 745 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A NATO Advanced Study Institute on "Large Scale Integrated Circuits Technology: State of the Art and Prospects" was held at Ettore Majorana Centre for Scientific Culture, Erice (Italy) on July 15-27, 1981, the first course of the International School of Solid-State Device Research. This volume contains the School Proceedings: fundamentals as well as up-to-date information on each subject presented by qualified authors. The material covered in this volume has been arranged in self-consistent chapters. Therefore, the Proceedings may be used as a suitable textbook or authoritative review for research workers and advanced students in the relevant field. The nascent information society is based on advanced technologies which will revolutionize human abilities to manipulate and communicate information. One of the most important underpinnings for developing such an information society lies in innovations in semiconductor microelectronics. Such innova tions, indeed, are dramatically reducing the cost of transmitting, storing, and processing information with improved performance, ushering in an era charac terized by large scale integration -the subject of this book.

Book Third Caltech Conference on Very Large Scale Integration

Download or read book Third Caltech Conference on Very Large Scale Integration written by R. Bryant and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 435 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The papers in this book were presented at the Third Caltech Conference on Very Large Scale Integration, held March 21-23, 1983 in Pasadena, California. The conference was organized by the Computer Science Depart ment, California Institute of Technology, and was partly supported by the Caltech Silicon Structures Project. This conference focused on the role of systematic methodologies, theoretical models, and algorithms in all phases of the design, verification, and testing of very large scale integrated circuits. The need for such disciplines has arisen as a result of the rapid progress of integrated circuit technology over the past 10 years. This progress has been driven largely by the fabrica tion technology, providing the capability to manufacture very complex elec tronic systems reliably and at low cost. At this point the capability to manufac ture very large scale integrated circuits has exceeded our capability to develop new product designs quickly, reliably, and at a reasonable cost. As a result new designs are undertaken only if the production volume will be large enough to amortize high design costs, products first appear on the market well past their announced delivery date, and reference manuals must be amended to document design flaws. Recent research in universities and in private industry has created an emerg ing science of very large scale integration.

Book Very Large Scale Integration VLSI

Download or read book Very Large Scale Integration VLSI written by D.F. Barbe and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-08 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even elementary school students of today know that electronics can do fan tastic things. Electronic calculators make arithmetic easy. An electronic box connected to your TV set provides a wonderful array of games. Electronic boxes can translate languages! Electronics has even changed watches from a pair of hands to a set of digits. Integrated circuit (IC) chips, which use transistors to store information in binary form and perform binary arithmetic, make all of this possible. In just a short twenty years, the field of inte grated circuits has progressed from chips containing several transistors performing simple functions such as OR and AND functions to chips presently available which contain thousands of transistors performing a wide range of memory, control and arithmetic functions. In the late 1970's Very Large Scale Integration (VLSI) caught the imagin ation of the industrialized world. The United States, Japan and other coun tries now have substantial efforts to push the frontier of microelectronics across the one-micrometer barrier and into sub-micrometer features. The achievement of this goal will have tremendous impl ications, both technolo gical and economic for the countries involved.

Book VLSI Technology

Download or read book VLSI Technology written by Yasuo Tarui and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-12 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The origin of the development of integrated circuits up to VLSI is found in the invention of the transistor, which made it possible to achieve the ac tion of a vacuum tube in a semiconducting solid. The structure of the tran sistor can be constructed by a manufacturing technique such as the intro duction of a small amount of an impurity into a semiconductor and, in ad dition, most transistor characteristics can be improved by a reduction of dimensions. These are all important factors in the development. Actually, the microfabrication of the integrated circuit can be used for two purposes, namely to increase the integration density and to obtain an improved perfor mance, e. g. a high speed. When one of these two aims is pursued, the result generally satisfies both. We use the Engl ish translation "very large scale integration (VLSIl" for "Cho LSI" in Japanese. In the United States of America, however, similar technology is bei ng developed under the name "very hi gh speed integrated circuits (VHSIl". This also originated from the nature of the integrated circuit which satisfies both purposes. Fortunately, the Japanese word "Cho LSI" has a wider meani ng than VLSI, so it can be used ina broader area. However, VLSI has a larger industrial effect than VHSI.

Book Digital Integrated Circuits

Download or read book Digital Integrated Circuits written by John E. Ayers and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-09-03 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exponential improvement in functionality and performance of digital integrated circuits has revolutionized the way we live and work. The continued scaling down of MOS transistors has broadened the scope of use for circuit technology to the point that texts on the topic are generally lacking after a few years. The second edition of Digital Integrated Circuits: Analysis and Design focuses on timeless principles with a modern interdisciplinary view that will serve integrated circuits engineers from all disciplines for years to come. Providing a revised instructional reference for engineers involved with Very Large Scale Integrated Circuit design and fabrication, this book delves into the dramatic advances in the field, including new applications and changes in the physics of operation made possible by relentless miniaturization. This book was conceived in the versatile spirit of the field to bridge a void that had existed between books on transistor electronics and those covering VLSI design and fabrication as a separate topic. Like the first edition, this volume is a crucial link for integrated circuit engineers and those studying the field, supplying the cross-disciplinary connections they require for guidance in more advanced work. For pedagogical reasons, the author uses SPICE level 1 computer simulation models but introduces BSIM models that are indispensable for VLSI design. This enables users to develop a strong and intuitive sense of device and circuit design by drawing direct connections between the hand analysis and the SPICE models. With four new chapters, more than 200 new illustrations, numerous worked examples, case studies, and support provided on a dynamic website, this text significantly expands concepts presented in the first edition.

Book Coupled Data Communication Techniques for High Performance and Low Power Computing

Download or read book Coupled Data Communication Techniques for High Performance and Low Power Computing written by Ron Ho and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-06-03 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wafer-scale integration has long been the dream of system designers. Instead of chopping a wafer into a few hundred or a few thousand chips, one would just connect the circuits on the entire wafer. What an enormous capability wafer-scale integration would offer: all those millions of circuits connected by high-speed on-chip wires. Unfortunately, the best known optical systems can provide suitably ?ne resolution only over an area much smaller than a whole wafer. There is no known way to pattern a whole wafer with transistors and wires small enough for modern circuits. Statistical defects present a ?rmer barrier to wafer-scale integration. Flaws appear regularly in integrated circuits; the larger the circuit area, the more probable there is a ?aw. If such ?aws were the result only of dust one might reduce their numbers, but ?aws are also the inevitable result of small scale. Each feature on a modern integrated circuit is carved out by only a small number of photons in the lithographic process. Each transistor gets its electrical properties from only a small number of impurity atoms in its tiny area. Inevitably, the quantized nature of light and the atomic nature of matter produce statistical variations in both the number of photons de?ning each tiny shape and the number of atoms providing the electrical behavior of tiny transistors. No known way exists to eliminate such statistical variation, nor may any be possible.
