Book Large Mobile Drilling Rigs Used Along the Alaska Pipeline

Download or read book Large Mobile Drilling Rigs Used Along the Alaska Pipeline written by Paul V. Sellmann and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The requirement for installing more than 70,000 vertical support members along elevated sections of the Alaska Pipeline resulted in an extremely large drilling program. Several large drilling units, some specially designed, including rotary (auger), percussive, and combination rotary-percussive units, were selected for this job. This selection of equipment and techniques provided the potential to drill in all conceivable material types. An examination of these drills in the field, together with product literature, provided some insight into the characteristics of these drills compared with other commercially available drilling units. The pipeline drilling program provided a major impetus for design and development of new equipment in the area of large rotary-percussive, and percussive drilling units. The pipeline drills in general showed sound design characteristics in weight, power, thrust, torque, and speed. Many of the auger boring heads could benefit from improvements in shape, angles, cutter position, and in consideration of the center of the hole problem. Need for work in this area was indicated by drilling rates, as well as by noticeable improvements in some augers following contractors' field modifications. (Author).

Book Geotechnical and Exploration Drilling in the Polar Regions

Download or read book Geotechnical and Exploration Drilling in the Polar Regions written by Pavel G. Talalay and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-01-01 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive review of drilling technologies in the polar regions, from the portable drilling equipment for shallow sampling and coring, to heavy drilling equipment for deep onshore and offshore drilling. Particular attention is given to safe drilling methods in permafrost. In recent years, interest in drilling in the polar regions has increased under the pressure of the geopolitical “rush” and the undiscovered resource potential. In addition, borehole monitoring of permafrost thermal states is urgently needed to obtain evidence of climate change. The book focuses on the latest drilling technologies but also discusses the historical development of sampling, and drilling tools and devices, over the last 60–70 years providing valuable insights into a way forward and future possibilities.

Book excerpt: “There are many norths in this North.” – Louis-Edmond Hamelin, 1975 Many Norths: Spatial Practice in a Polar Territory charts the unique spatial realities of Canada’s Arctic region, an immense territory populated with small, dispersed communities. The region has undergone dramatic transformations in the name of sovereignty, aboriginal affairs management, resources, and trade, among others. For most of the Arctic’s modern history, architecture, infrastructure, and settlements have been the tools of colonialism. Today, tradition and modernity are intertwined. Northerners have demonstrated remarkable adaptation and resilience as powerful climatic, social, and economic pressures collide. This unprecedented book documents—through the themes of urbanism, architecture, mobility, monitoring, and resources—the multiplicity of norths that appear and the spatial practices employed to negotiate it. Using innovative drawings, maps, timelines, as well as essays and interviews, Many Norths reveals a distinct northern vernacular.
