The contributors are experts in the study of their respective languages, including Czech, Dutch, English, Estonian, Finnish, High German, Icelandic, Latvian, Lithuanian, Low German, Norwegian, Polish, and Swedish. The primary texts explored in the essays are Bible translations, but genres other than biblical are also discussed.

Book excerpt: On July 1, 1523, Johann van den Eschen and Hendrik Voes, two Augustinians friars from Antwerp, were burned on the Grand Plaza in Brussels, thereby becoming the first victims of the Reformation. Despite being well-known, the event barely registers in most Reformation histories. By tracing its origins and examining the impact of the executions on Martin Luther, on the Reformed Augustinian world, and on the early Reformation in the Low Countries and the German speaking lands, this study definitively demonstrates that the burnings were in fact the dénouement of broader trends within Late Medieval Reformed Augustinianism, as well as a watershed in the early Reformation. In doing so, it also reveals the central role played by the Augustinian friars of Lower Germany in shaping both the content and spread of the early Reformation, as well as Wittenberg's influence on the events leading up to these first executions.

Book excerpt: A distinct feature of the Protestant Reformation was Martin Luther's intentional use of the vernacular (German), rather than Latin, in his writings in order to engage the laity in theological discussions. This paper studies the impact of the Protestant Reformation on the use of the vernacular in the Holy Roman Empire. We show that immediately after 1517, there was a sharp rise in religious vernacular printing output, especially in Protestant but also in Catholic printing cities. Moreover, and importantly, we find similar patterns for printed texts outside the religious realm. In turn, within decades after the Reformation vernacular works became widely available throughout the Holy Roman Empire. Exploiting variation within Catholic and within Protestant printing cities, we provide evidence on the underlying mechanism. We document that the Reformation, by increasing religious competition, reduced the Catholic Church's influence on language use in printing, and that it contributed to the standardization of the German language. We then turn to language change in education and show that the Reformation led to a significant increase in the number of German schools in Protestant printing cities relative to Catholic ones. All in all, our results suggest that the Reformation played a decisive role in promoting the use of the vernacular in two important domains -- printing and education -- in the Holy Roman Empire.

Book excerpt: The first major study of the early Reformation and the Polish monarchy for over a century, this volume asks why Crown and church in the reign of King Sigismund I (1506-1548) did not persecute Lutherans. It offers a new narrative of Luther's dramatic impact on this monarchy - which saw violent urban Reformations and the creation of Christendom's first Lutheran principality by 1525 - placing these events in their comparative European context. King Sigismund's realm appears to offer a major example of sixteenth-century religious toleration: the king tacitly allowed his Hanseatic ports to enact local Reformations, enjoyed excellent relations with his Lutheran vassal duke in Prussia, allied with pro-Luther princes across Europe, and declined to enforce his own heresy edicts. Polish church courts allowed dozens of suspected Lutherans to walk free. Examining these episodes in turn, this study does not treat toleration purely as the product of political calculation or pragmatism. Instead, through close analysis of language, it reconstructs the underlying cultural beliefs about religion and church (ecclesiology) held by the king, bishops, courtiers, literati, and clergy - asking what, at heart, did these elites understood 'Lutheranism' and 'catholicism' to be? It argues that the ruling elites of the Polish monarchy did not persecute Lutheranism because they did not perceive it as a dangerous Other - but as a variant form of catholic Christianity within an already variegated late medieval church, where social unity was much more important than doctrinal differences between Christians. Building on John Bossy and borrowing from J.G.A. Pocock, it proposes a broader hypothesis on the Reformation as a shift in the languages and concept of orthodoxy.
