Book How to Learn Russian

Download or read book How to Learn Russian written by Henry Riola and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-14 with total page 596 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from How to Learn Russian: A Manual for Students of Russian, Based Upon the Ollendorffian System of Teaching Languages, and Adapted for Self-Instruction The almost total neglect that the Russian Language has hitherto met with in this country is capable of two explana tions, one of which may be said to include the other, namely, its supposed insurmountable difficulties and the want of a good Grammar. On the first point, suffice it to say that there is nothing - absolutely nothing - which should deter the student. The prominent features of the language are clear ness and methodical arrangement. If the contrary have been found to be the case, it is owing to no other causes than the defective. Methods and the insufficient or faulty explanations presented by the Grammars hitherto published both in this country and on the Continent. This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Handbook of the History of the English Language for the Use of Teacher and Student Since the first appearance of this work the field of English philology has been sedulously cultivated by many able writers both at home and abroad. It may be sufficient here to mention Koch's 'Historische Grammatik, ' 1869; Matzner's 'Englische Grammatik, ' 1865;Marsh's 'English Language, ' 1862;Helfenstein's 'Comparative Grammar of the Teutonic Languages, ' 1870; Dr. Abbott's 'Shakspearian Grammar, ' 1870; Dr. Morris's 'Historical Outlines, ' 1873;A. J.Ellis's great work on 'Early English Pronunciation, ' 1868-75; and the important Transactions of the Chaucer and Early English d104 Societies. These and several other recent works have been consulted in the preparation of the present edition, which thus embodies much fresh matter in further illustration of the successive steps by which the English tongue has arrived at its present state. Some may possibly affect surprise that no change has been made in the nomenclature, and that the terms Saxon and Anglo-Saxon are still retained. Book Handbook of the English Language

Download or read book Handbook of the English Language written by R. G. Latham and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-04 with total page 580 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Handbook of the English Language: For the Use of Students of the Universities and the Higher Classes of Schools MY first work on the structure of the English Lan guage, and the allied subjects, such as its history, dialects, and its place in the indo-european family, was published in 1841. These were questions that, in the main, were held to be important because they were introductory to others of a higher kind i.e. The study of Comparative Philology, in general. This, however, is an object which may be put forth too exclusively. Nor does it apply to the English Language in particular. It is the case with every other language in the world, provided only that it be the native language of the student. Every other language he has to learn; and, when he has learned it, it is never so familiar to him as his own. If he learn it from books, many (perhaps most) of the rules are of artificial character. But, in the mother-tongue, the necessary materials present themselves spontane ously, and the study of principles can be pursued with out any secondary object to distract the thought or divide the process between the memory and the reflective powers. Book The French Student s Manual Or Colloquial and Grammatical Exercises

This book was released on 2019-02-11 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The French Student's Manual, or Colloquial and Grammatical Exercises: Intended to Impart to the Student Both a Theoretical and Practical Knowledge of the French Language Towanns the end of the last century, when France became a prey to anarchy, many of her best citizens were complled to seek a refuge in foreign countries; and, having lost all their possessions, they endeavoured to earn an honest living by becoming teachers of the French language. The tremendous convulsions which agitated their native land, in her passage from despotism to com parative liberty, the wonderful achievements of the man who com manded the admiration and fear of the civilized world, and the flood of light which then began to pour from France over the whole scientific world, all tended to render a knowledge of her language indispensable to the well-educated of both Europe and America. Since that period, it has been more and more admired for its justness, purity, accuracy, and flexibility; and the demand for it has increased, especially in this country. Although the commercial relations existing between the United States and South America seem to render a knowledge of the Spanish language almost indispensable to our youth; yet it is comparatively neglect ed, while the French is extensively studied, from the fact that it has become universal and that an individual who is conversant with it, and with the English, may visit any portion of the civilized world, with the certainty of but seldom requiring an interpreter. The truth of this is so generally felt, that there can scarcely be found, in our widely spread republic, a school of any classical pre tensions ia which the French is not taught, or attempted to be taught. Book Punctuation Practically Illustrated

Download or read book Punctuation Practically Illustrated written by Kate O'Neill and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-11 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Punctuation Practically Illustrated: A Manual for Students and Correspondents If this study is important from a business point of view, its educational value is beyond the power of calculation. The ability to express an idea clearly in a well-rounded period is the greatest gift of the preacher, the lawyer, and the statesman; and this power is not to be obtained without close study of those laws of language which are clearly defined and may be easily mas tered. Owing to the number of points involved in each rule as formulated by grammarians, the formal teaching of the subject is generally deferred until the pupil has finished his grammar course; and the programmes of most schools unwisely allow but little time for specific instruo tion in this important feature of education. This book was released on 2018-03-24 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from William R. Harper's Introductory Hebrew Method and Manual While all agree as to the and desired. The method of attaining this end is a question in dispute. According to one view. The student is first to learn the principles as they are laid down in the grammars. And then apply them to selected words. Or short senten ces. And after a short preliminary training of this sort. He is plunged headlong into a text without notes of any kind. And expected to make progress. And to enjoy the study. His vocabu lary is to be learned by looking up the words in the Lexicon. Until they become familiar. Different phases of this method are in use among teachers of Hebrew; but all follow practically the same order. (1) study of grammar. (2) application of grammar. It is the purpose of this volume to furnish a text-book. Which shall assist in acquiring the Hebrew language by a different meth cd. The method employed may be called an inductive one. The order of work which it advocates is. First. To gain an accurate and thorough knowledge of some of the facts of the language; sec ondly. To learn from these facts the principles which they illustrate. And by which they are regulated: thirdly. To apply these principles in the further progress of the work. A few words of explanation are needed at this point. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
