Learners in three different language areas in Malawi participated in a picture-based test to find out whether the development of problem-oriented logical thinking is influenced by the instruction in the mother tongue in early primary school. Answers are offered with the help of tests and observations during the tests, as well as interviews with teachers, parents, and decision makers. Despite the pedagogical potential of this theory, Cognitive Linguistic applications in foreign language teaching and learning are still in their initial stages and empirical research testing the effect of Cognitive-Linguistic teaching approaches in real classroom settings is rather scarce. The aim of this monograph is to provide insight into key tenets of the Cognitive Linguistic framework under the premise of their relevance for foreign language pedagogy. Empirical studies are presented focusing on how phrasal verbs can be taught from a Cognitive Linguistic perspective via awareness-raising methods. Based on statistical analyses and considering individual learner variables such as language aptitude, cognitive load and how students evaluated their own learning outcome, the author discusses the merits of a Cognitive Linguistic approach to phrasal verbs.

In the language learning program, adult learners bring with them certain advantages. Adults are better at understanding grammatical rules since they are aware of the rules and structures in their own language. [...] Especially in the areas of vocabulary and language structure, adults are actually better language learners than children. Adult learners have more highly developed cognitive systems, are able to make higher order associations and generalizations, and can integrate new language input with their already substantial learning experience. They also rely on long-term memory rather than the short-term memory function used by children and younger learners for rote learning. Adults have already developed learning strategies that have served them well in other contexts. They can use these strategies to their advantage in language learning. This research will suggest ways of dealing better with adult learners in their academic performance in the language class. The researchers' aim will be to investigate that they have potentials to become accomplished language learners with the advantage of more advanced cognitive development in the first language, and they integrate new language input with their already substantial learning experience.
