Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled A Study of the Impact of Foreign Language Anxiety on Tertiary Students' Oral Performance submitted by Lowana Phillips for the degree of Master of Arts (Applied Linguistics) at the University of Hong Kong August, 2005 Speaking in a foreign language class, especially in front of others, can be a significant anxiety inducing task for the language learner. Therefore it is important to consider how anxiety affects the foreign language learner. Although there is a large body of research on anxiety and speaking, the specific area of public speaking for Chinese learners of English is relatively untouched. This study investigates the impact that anxiety may have on the assessment of public speaking proficiency and on how students feel about their oral performance. The Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (FLCAS; Horwitz, Horwitz, & Cope, 1986) was used to select four high anxiety and four low anxiety, tertiary-level students from four English language classes at the University of Hong Kong (N=62). The eight students gave stimulated recall and interview comments after watching their videoed presentations. Twelve FLCAS statements were selected as relevant to giving a presentation, and student responses to the selected statements were used as the basis for interview questions. Three different teachers graded each presentation. There were no significant correlations between grade and anxiety level. The highest and lowest grades were given to two high anxiety students with very similar levels of anxiety. However, there were significant differences between high and low anxiety students' perceptions of performance. Overall, the low anxiety students showed a more positive attitude towards giving a presentation in terms of foreign language learning attitude, speaking, and evaluation. The findings suggest that the relationship between foreign language anxiety and oral performance is not always clear cut, and that increased anxiety does not necessarily mean decreased oral proficiency. Despite this it may be necessary for foreign language teachers to be more aware of helping students make use of and reduce their anxieties, and help students improve their attitude towards language learning. Book Foreign Language Anxiety and the Advanced Language Learner

Download or read book Foreign Language Anxiety and the Advanced Language Learner written by Zsuzsa Tóth and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2010-08-11 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Does anxiety about learning and using a foreign language decline as learners become more competent in the target language, or is anxiety also relevant at higher levels of proficiency? This is the question Foreign Language Anxiety and the Advanced Language Learner sets out to explore. The aim of the book is to give readers an insight into what role anxiety plays in the language learning and communication processes of advanced language learners. Specifically, the study examines how advanced EFL learners’ foreign language anxiety (FLA) can be characterized; how anxiety relates to other individual differences (cognitive, affective, personality); and explores the relationship between FLA and various aspects of learners’ performance and communication experience in the target language. The research context is Hungary. The findings, however, are not confined to the Hungarian EFL setting. In addition to making a contribution to the clarification of some unresolved issues in language anxiety research—including the role of proficiency in the development of anxiety, the relationship between anxiety and other learner variables, and the much-debated question of whether or not anxiety accounts for differential success in L2 learning—this study has important implications for language teachers as well.

Book Overcoming Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety

Download or read book Overcoming Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety written by Jinyan Huang and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Foreign language anxiety and language-skill-specific anxiety are widely used to describe the feeling of tension and apprehension, which is specifically associated with foreign language learning contexts, including listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Foreign language classroom anxiety (FLCA) is related to foreign language anxiety and language-skill-specific anxiety, and fairly recently identified as distinguished from other forms of anxiety. FLCA is a more general type of anxiety in learning a foreign language with a strong speaking anxiety element; and low self-confidence is identified as an important component of its construct. Research shows that FLCA is a complex, multi-dimensional phenomenon; it has many potential sources; and it interferes with the acquisition, retention, and production of a foreign language. This book examines the dynamics of FLCA phenomena.

This book was released on 2012 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of the asynchronous voice-conferencing technology, Voice Thread ®, on the anxiety and oral proficiency of high school students in their third year of studying Spanish as a foreign language. In this quasi-experimental study students' foreign language anxiety levels and oral proficiency were examined to determine if a difference existed based on the type of practice used. The treatment group used Voice Thread ® to practice speaking. The control group used the traditional method of the language laboratory to practice speaking. The Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (FLCAS) was used to measure anxiety levels and the Performance Assessment for Language Students (PALS) level three speaking analytical grading rubric was used to measure oral proficiency. A one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to analyze the foreign language anxiety data. A multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) was used to analyze the oral proficiency data. Results for the FLCAS yielded no significant difference between the control and treatment groups. Results of the MANOVA yielded a significant main effect difference between the control and experimental groups. Posthoc pairwise comparisons revealed statistically significant differences for the subscales of task completion, comprehensibility, level of discourse and fluency. No statistically significant differences were found for the subscales of vocabulary and language control. Descriptors: foreign language, anxiety, oral proficiency, voice-conferencing

Book excerpt: The purpose of this paper is to examine in depth and to synthesize the literature on foreign language anxiety, with specific focus on speaking anxiety. This paper reviews the development of the foreign language anxiety construct and extensive research on its relationship with other domains of second language acquisition, including specific language skills and language learning processes. Review of the literature has confirmed that foreign language anxiety plays a significant role in learners' performance and achievement. However, there are still many areas that need further research and clarification. Variables such as individual differences still cloud the relationship between anxiety and achievement, thus suggesting that further research should be conducted in order to clarify the effects of foreign language anxiety and should strive to alleviate learners' anxiety in the language classroom.

Download or read book Foreign Language Test Anxiety in EFL Learners How Does It Affect the Language Skills of Writing Reading Listening and Oral Production written by Leonie Leppich and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2023-01-11 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bachelor Thesis from the year 2022 in the subject Didactics for the subject English - Pedagogy, Literature Studies, grade: 2,0, University of Hildesheim, language: English, abstract: This bachelor thesis is about foreign language test anxiety in EFL learners. Furthermore, this thesis deals with two main questions. The first question is in which way the test anxiety affects the language skills of reading, listening, writing and speaking comprehension. The second question focusses on the factors that impact language test anxiety in oral production. In order to be able to answer these two questions, I will write about the theoretical background in the first part of my bachelor thesis. First, I will introduce second language acquisition in general, followed by a general definition of anxiety. According to the definition, different types of anxiety are represented. After explaining different types of anxiety, I will explain the topic foreign language anxiety specifically. This is followed by an introduction to the topic of foreign language test anxiety. After the theoretical background has been presented, I will discuss various existing studies to answer the two main questions. For this purpose, I will deal separately with reading, listening, writing and oral production regarding the first question. In the second question, I will then focus specifically on factors that can have an impact on test anxiety. At the end, the results are discussed and concluded.
