Throughout the last century there has been a lot of discussion concerning language and gender. Mainly, linguists have focused on the different discourse strategies and conversational styles of women and men, that is, they dealt with the difference of women's and men's language. Sexism became an important point of discussion in the 1960s, and especially feminist critiques have discussed the sexist representation of women in language. Many linguists tried to find alternatives for features of language that discriminate against women, and thus sought to correct existing sex biases. In a time where the inequality of the sexes is said to have diminished, the anti-sexism movement seems to have decreased, as well. People try to speak in a politically correct way, a way that is not sexist or racist, but certain stereotypes are nevertheless still part of the language system. This can be seen when taking a closer look at the media, which plays an important role in the process of language development. Newspapers articles, for example, have to be objective and without bias, but as they employ language that is politically correct with regard to common language usage, they reflect the language of a society. Consequently, the media is a rich source for analysis when it comes to examining to what extent sexism is still an issue today. Has the feminist fight against male supremacy been without effect? The author discusses if sexism in language has diminished and how it is dealt with. Previous research shows that language contributes to gender inequality in various ways: Gender-related information is transmitted through formal and semantic features of language, such as the grammatical category of gender, through gender-related connotations of role names (e.g., manager, secretary), and through customs of denoting social groups with derogatory vs. neutral names. Both as a formal system and as a means of communication, language passively reflects culture-specific social conditions. In active use it can also be used to express and, potentially, perpetuate those conditions. The questions addressed in the contributions to this Frontiers Special Topic include: • how languages shape the cognitive representations of gender • how features of languages correspond with gender equality in different societies • how language contributes to social behaviour towards the sexes • how gender equality can be promoted through strategies for gender-fair language use These questions are explored both developmentally (across the life span from childhood to old age) and in adults. The contributions present work conducted across a wide range of languages, including some studies that make cross-linguistic comparisons. According to Rebecca J. Cook and Simone Cusack, in order to abolish all forms of discrimination against women, priority needs to be given to the elimination of gender stereotypes. The author does so by analysing linguistic forms that support linguistic prejudices regarding women in a hybrid approach, which combines quantitative and qualitative aspects. The hypothesis is to be regarded as verified if less than half of the stereotypes taken into consideration is reproduced more often in the direct speech of Clarisse. This analysis is interdisciplinary by the result of considering the branches sociolinguistics and stylistics. The analysis of the fictional orality reveals how linguistic stereotypes contribute to the portrayal of both characters and the instances of deeper meaning in this novel. Moreover, it shows to a certain degree, in how far this novel upholds the preservation of language-related clichés. Indicated stereotypical aspects of the novel can be a basis for critical questions and reflections on language-related gender stereotypes in literature, advertisement and media. Furthermore, the preparation of the examination results in an analytical framework for literary texts. This paper starts off by, first of all, explaining the sociolinguistic perspective on linguistic gender differences to provide a clear comprehension of stereotypes, their significance, the deficits of early research on this variation and the complexity of this subject. Subsequently, the corpora's composition is illustrated and significant results of the application of the framework of analysis to the representations of direct speech of both characters are displayed. The next chapter then includes an in-depth examination of a specific part of the novel to obtain more comprehensive information regarding the contribution of representations of linguistic clichés to literary functions and a comparison of the findings. Finally, explanations for the analysis results are considered in the final chapter to justify their reliability and increase the understanding of the influences of linguistic assumptions on this novel.

Book excerpt: Most studies of gender differences in language use have been undertaken from exclusively either a sociocultural or a biological perspective. By contrast, this innovative volume places the analysis of language and gender in the context of a biocultural framework, examining both cultural and biological sources of gender differences in language, as well as the interaction between them. The first two parts of the volume on cultural variation in gender-differentiated language use, comparing Western English-speaking societies with societies elsewhere in the world. The essays are distinguished by an emphasis on the syntax, rather than style or strategy, of gender-differentiated forms of discourse but also often carry out the same forms differently through different choices of language form. These gender differences are shown to be socially organized, although the essays in Part I also raise the possibility that some cross-cultural similarities in the ways males and females differentially use language may be related to sex-based differences in physical and emotional makeup. Part III examines the relationship between language and the brain and shows that although there are differences between the ways males and females process language in the brain, these do not yield any differences in linguistic competence or language use. Taken as a whole, the essays reveal a great diversity in the cultural construction of gender through language and explicity show that while there is some evidence of the influence of biologically based sex differences on the language of women and men, the influence of culture is far greater, and gender differences in language use are better accounted for in terms of culture than in terms of biology. The collection will appeal widely to anthropologists, psychologists, linguists, and other concerned with the understanding of gender roles.
