Download or read book Language in Use written by Loredana Pungă and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Language in Use: Metaphors in Non-Literary Contexts is a kaleidoscope of studies born from the belief that there is always something more to say about metaphor. What unites the pieces of this kaleidoscope is that all chapters rely on conceptual metaphor theory. As such, they bring together applications of this theory (and some of its further developments) in a variety of contexts and types of discourse, against a multitude of cultural backgrounds. The book is structured into two sections. The first, Metaphors at play and work, is dedicated to the use of metaphors in everyday language. Particular attention is paid to metaphors of, and in, translation and specialised jargons, and color terms-driven metaphors. The second, Living with metaphors, builds on metaphors in private discourses, including diaries and life stories, and in public ones, pertaining to the political arena, advertising, media campaigns, the foreign language teaching environment, and the film industry.
Download or read book Analysing Professional Genres written by Anna Trosborg and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2000 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An understanding of genres in communication (written and spoken) is essential to professional success. This volume studies situationally appropriate responses in professional communication in face-to-face interaction and distance communication, from a socio-cognitive point of view. A traditional rhetorical approach does not give much insight in the ways in which genres are embedded in communicative activity or how actors draw upon genre knowledge to perform effectively. However, if genres are considered as embedded in social interaction as typified forms of typified circumstances, the rich dynamic aspects of genre knowledge can be disclosed. The chapters deal with genre knowledge in various settings, illustrating the impact of time, place, medium, skills and purpose, and some chapters deal with genre analysis in a broader sense giving ideas for applied genre analysis. The book is of interest to professionals and scholars in communication studies, discourse analysis, and social and cognitive science.

Download or read book The Discourse of Tourism and National Heritage written by Claudia Elena Stoian and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Discourse of Tourism and National Heritage: A Contrastive Study from a Cultural Perspective presents an in-depth research study in the field of online tourism promotion. It focuses on the national online promotion of UNESCO World Heritage Sites, on two different types of websites â " institutional and commercial â " from three countries, Romania, Spain and Great Britain. The book analyses the way in which each country combines various modes to create a virtual brochure with a promotional message from both institutional and commercial positions. In doing this, it studies the organization of the websites and their webpages, as well as the lexico-grammatical and visual features of their promotional messages. The theoretical framework used is Systemic Functional Linguistics (Halliday 1985, 1994; Kress and van Leeuwen 1996, 2006; Halliday and Matthiessen 2004). The results are compared in relation to the types of websites and to the countries in which they were produced. These are further interpreted from a cultural perspective, showing that the findings can be accounted for by cultural variability, in particular the dimension of context (Hall 1976, 1990, 2000).
