Book Philosophy As Fiction

Download or read book Philosophy As Fiction written by Joshua Landy and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2009-05-26 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Philosophy as Fiction seeks to account for the peculiar power of philosophical literature by taking as its case study the paradigmatic generic hybrid of the twentieth century, Marcel Proust's In Search of Lost Time. At once philosophical--in that it presents claims, and even deploys arguments concerning such traditionally philosophical issues as knowledge, self-deception, selfhood, love, friendship, and art--and literary, in that its situations are imaginary and its stylization inescapably prominent, Proust's novel presents us with a conundrum. How should it be read? Can the two discursive structures co-exist, or must philosophy inevitably undermine literature (by sapping the narrative of its vitality) and literature undermine philosophy (by placing its claims in the mouth of an often unreliable narrator)? In the case of Proust at least, the result is greater than the sum of its parts. Not only can a coherent, distinctive philosophical system be extracted from the Recherche, once the narrator's periodic waywardness is taken into account; not only does a powerfully original style pervade its every nook, overtly reinforcing some theories and covertly exemplifying others; but aspects of the philosophy also serve literary ends, contributing more to character than to conceptual framework. What is more, aspects of the aesthetics serve philosophical ends, enabling a reader to engage in an active manner with an alternative art of living. Unlike the "essay" Proust might have written, his novel grants us the opportunity to use it as a practice ground for cooperation among our faculties, for the careful sifting of memories, for the complex procedures involved in self-fashioning, and for the related art of self-deception. It is only because the narrator's insights do not always add up--a weakness, so long as one treats the novel as a straightforward treatise--that it can produce its training effect, a feature that turns out to be its ultimate strength.

Book excerpt: One of the greatest innovators of his time, Dick Landy was one of those guys who made you rush back to your seat from the concessions stand so you could watch him navigate the 1320. Win, lose, or draw, watching one of Landy's Dodges battling the likes of Ronnie Sox, "Grumpy" Jenkins, or Hubert Platt was worth the price of admission alone. Landy's Dodges: The Mighty Mopars of "Dandy" Dick Landy takes you chronologically through the cars of Dick's career, from piloting his first mount (1954 Ford Pickup) through his historic years of campaigning Dodges. Chrysler racing historian and author Geoff Stunkard presents a highly detailed account of Dick's cars, including results and images from the Landy family's personal archive and modern shots of his restored cars. In addition to coverage of Dick's 1964 S/S Dodge and 1968 Hemi Dart, scarce info about his Ford Galaxies and Plymouth Savoy is included as well. At no other time has Landy's entire career been chronicled and cataloged in print with this much attention to detail. Sit back in your recliner (wheels up) and enjoy the most comprehensive book on the history of "Dandy" Dick Landy and his cars.

Book Jewish Identity and Palestinian Rights

Download or read book Jewish Identity and Palestinian Rights written by David Landy and published by Zed Books Ltd.. This book was released on 2012-09-13 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diaspora Jews are increasingly likely to criticise Israel and support Palestinian rights. In the USA, Europe and elsewhere, Jewish organisations have sprung up to oppose Israel’s treatment of Palestinians, facing harsh criticism from fellow Jews for their actions. Why and how has this movement come about? What does it mean for Palestinians and for diaspora Jews? Jewish Identity and Palestinian Rights is a groundbreaking study of this vital and growing worldwide social movement, examining in depth how it challenges traditional diasporic Jewish representations of itself. It looks at why people join this movement and how they relate to the Palestinians and their struggle, asking searching questions about transnational solidarity movements. This book makes an important contribution to Israel/Palestine and Jewish studies and responds to urgent questions in social movement theory.

Book Making Music with Sounds

Download or read book Making Music with Sounds written by Leigh Landy and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Making Music with Sounds offers a creative introduction to the art of making sound-based music. It introduces the elements of making compositions with sounds and facilitates creativity in school age children, with the activities primarily for 11-14 year old students. It can also be used by people of all ages becoming acquainted with this music for the first time. Sound-based music is defined as the art form in which the sound, rather than the musical note, is the basic unit and is closely related to electronic music and the sonic arts. The art of sound organisation can be found in a number of forms of music--in film, television, theatre, dance, and new media. Despite this, there are few materials available currently for young people to discover how to make sound-based music. This book offers a programme of development starting from aural awareness, through the discovery and organisation of potential sounds, to the means of generating and manipulating sounds to create sequences and entire works. The book's holistic pedagogical approach to composition also involves aspects related to musical understanding and appreciation, reinforced by the author's online pedagogical ElectroAcoustic Resource Site (EARS II).

Book Unconditional Love

Download or read book Unconditional Love written by Don Landy and published by Tate Publishing. This book was released on 2011-07 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dogs were never a part of Don Landy's life plan. He and his wife were devoted breeders of show cats, and a dog just didn't seem to fit in the picture. That was, until a brutal winter storm brought a very large, tired and hungry dog to the front door. After experiencing the heartbreak of finding their houseguest a forever home, they realized it was time to add a baby to the family, and before you could say 'impossible', they were the proud owners of a nine and a half week old German Shepherd named Sabrina. Over the next eleven years Sabrina went from one debilitating illness to another. They spent much of our time traveling from one specialist to another, watching and waiting as she underwent six major surgeries. But no matter how intense the pain, her disposition never changed. She loved everyone, and bounded through life with the spirit of a puppy and an ever present smile. Sabrina taught everyone she met the meaning of courage. Each and every day, she demonstrated that life was to be truly lived, for however long God chose to grant her. But the most important lesson Sabrina had to share was that of Unconditional Love. Join Don Landy for this dog's tale of happiness, togetherness, and the everlasting rewards of a pet's love.

Book Understanding the Art of Sound Organization

Download or read book Understanding the Art of Sound Organization written by Leigh Landy and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2007-08-17 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first work to propose a comprehensive musicological framework to study sound-based music, a rapidly developing body of work that includes electroacoustic art music, turntable composition, and acoustic and digital sound installations. The art of sound organization, also known as electroacoustic music, uses sounds not available to traditional music making, including prerecorded, synthesized, and processed sounds. The body of work of such sound-based music (which includes electroacoustic art music, turntable composition, computer games, and acoustic and digital sound installations) has developed more rapidly than its musicology. Understanding the Art of Sound Organization proposes the first general foundational framework for the study of the art of sound organization, defining terms, discussing relevant forms of music, categorizing works, and setting sound-based music in interdisciplinary contexts. Leigh Landy's goal in this book is not only to create a theoretical framework but also to make the work more accessible—to suggest a way to understand sound-based music, to give a listener what he terms “something to hold on to,” for example, by connecting elements in a work to everyday experience. Landy considers the difficulties of categorizing works and discusses such types of works as sonic art and electroacoustic music, pointing out where they overlap and how they are distinctive. He proposes a “sound-based music paradigm” that transcends such traditional categories as art and pop music. Landy defines patterns that suggest a general framework and places the studies of sound-based music into interdisciplinary contexts, from acoustics to semiotics, proposing a holistic research approach that considers the interconnectedness of a given work's history, theory, technological aspects, and social impact. The author's ElectroAcoustic Resource Site (EARS, www.ears.dmu.ac.uk), the architecture of which parallels this book's structure, offers updated bibliographic resource abstracts and related information.

Book How to Do Things with Fictions

Download or read book How to Do Things with Fictions written by Joshua Landy and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2012-08-23 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why does Mark's Jesus speak in parables? Why does Plato's Socrates make bad arguments? Why are Beckett's novels so inscrutable? And why don't stage magicians even pretend to summon spirits anymore? In a series of captivating chapters on Mark, Plato, Beckett, Mallarm , and Chaucer, Joshua Landy not only answers these questions but explains why they are worth asking in the first place. Witty and approachable, How to Do Things with Fictions challenges the widespread assumption that literary texts must be informative or morally improving in order to be of any real benefit. It reveals that authors are sometimes best thought of not as entertainers or as educators but as personal trainers of the brain, putting their willing readers through exercises designed to fortify specific mental capacities, from form-giving to equanimity, from reason to faith. Delivering plenty of surprises along the way--that moral readings of literature can be positively dangerous; that the parables were deliberately designed to be misunderstood; that Plato knowingly sets his main character up for a fall; that metaphor is powerfully connected to religious faith; that we can sustain our beliefs even when we suspect them to be illusions--How to Do Things with Fictions convincingly shows that our best allies in the struggle for more rigorous thinking, deeper faith, richer experience, and greater peace of mind may well be the imaginative writings sitting on our shelves.
