Book Spatial Politics in Contemporary London Literature

Download or read book Spatial Politics in Contemporary London Literature written by Laura Colombino and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-06-19 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyses the spatial politics of a range of British novelists writing on London since the 1950s, emphasizing spatial representation as an embodied practice at the point where the architectural landscape and the body enter into relation with each other. Colombino visits the city in connection with its boundaries, abstract spaces and natural microcosms, as they stand in for all the conflicting realms of identity; its interstices and ruins are seen as inhabited by bodies that reproduce internally the external conditions of political and social struggle. The study brings into focus the fiction in which London provides not a residual interest but a strong psychic-phenomenological grounding, and where the awareness of the physical reality of buildings and landscape conditions shape the concept of the subject traversing this space. Authors such as J. G. Ballard, Geoff Dyer, Michael Moorcock, Peter Ackroyd, Iain Sinclair, Geoff Ryman, Tom McCarthy, Michael Bracewell and Zadie Smith are considered in order to map the relationship of body, architecture and spatial politics in contemporary creative prose on the city. Through readings that are consistently informed by recent developments in urban studies and reflections formulated by architects, sociologists, anthropologists and art critics, this book offers a substantial contribution to the burgeoning field of literary urban studies.

Book Iain Sinclair Noise Neoliberalism and the Matter of London

Download or read book Iain Sinclair Noise Neoliberalism and the Matter of London written by Niall Martin and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2015-09-24 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For much of the 20th century the modernist city was articulated in terms of narratives of progress and development. Today the neoliberal city confronts us with all the cultural 'noise' of disorder and excess meaning. As this book demonstrates, for more than 40 years London-based writer, film-maker and 'psychogeographer' Iain Sinclair has proved to be one of the most incisive commentators on the contemporary city: tracing the emerging contours of a metropolis where the meeting of global and local is never without incident. Iain Sinclair: Noise, Neoliberalism and the Matter of London explores Sinclair's investigations into the nature of conflicting urban realities through an examination of the ways in which the noise of neoliberal excess intersects with the noise of literary experiment. In this way, the book casts new light on theorisations of the city in the contemporary era.

Book The Avant Postman

    Book Details:
  • Author : David Vichnar
  • Publisher : Charles University in Prague, Karolinum Press
  • Release : 2023-11-01
  • ISBN : 8024649373
  • Pages : 510 pages

Download or read book The Avant Postman written by David Vichnar and published by Charles University in Prague, Karolinum Press. This book was released on 2023-11-01 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Avant-Postman explores a broad range of innovative postwar writing in France, Britain, and the United States. Taking James Joyce’s "revolution of the word" in Ulysses and Finnegans Wake as a joint starting point, David Vichnar draws genealogical lines through the work of more than fifty writers up to the present, including Alain Robbe-Grillet, B. S. Johnson, William Burroughs, Christine Brooke-Rose, Georges Perec, Kathy Acker, Iain Sinclair, Hélène Cixous, Alan Moore, David Foster Wallace, and many others. Centering the exploration around five writing strategies employed by Joyce—narrative parallax, stylistic metempsychosis, concrete writing, forgery, and neologising the logos—the book reveals the striking continuities and developments from Joyce’s day to our own.

Book Yeats Annual No 8

Download or read book Yeats Annual No 8 written by Warwick Gould and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-07-27 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Yeats Annual No.8 has two distinct themes: Yeats's poetic technique and his aims for an Irish Theatre. Essays from Helen Vendler, Richard Taylor, Timothy Armstrong and Wayne Chapman place the poetry under close scrutiny and offer challenging new studies. Yeats himself writes the remaining essays, including the long-awaited first publication of his Wildean dialogue and an uncollected address on the Irish National Theatre delivered in 1934. Richard Londraville edits four of Yeats's lectures given in England and America in 1902-4.

Book A Yeats Dictionary

Download or read book A Yeats Dictionary written by Lester I. Conner and published by Syracuse University Press. This book was released on 1999-01-01 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first dictionary to identify, chart, and explain in context the many proper names and place names that so famously enrich the poetry of William Butler Yeats and, just as famously, anchor that poetry to Ireland. In compiling this work, Lester I. Conner has relied upon Yeats's own prose, the principal Yeats criticism, and the writings of Yeats's friends and critics. The result is a work that warmly ushers us into the poems, where we find we are not strangers after all.
