Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2016 in the subject Engineering - Robotics, Mansoura University, language: English, abstract: This thesis studies strategies for humanitarian demining using robotic units. The author presents a low-cost system for landmines detection. The proposed system uses fusion of low cost multi sensors instead of using very expensive one. The proposed robot used sensor fusion technique to increase the probability of mine detection. The author has developed decision level fusion to decrease false alarm of mines detection. He used complete coverage path planning to find all possible mines in the environment. The author proposed using multiple robots with the same structure to use complete coverage path in parallel way to save the time. He proposed effective obstacle avoidance algorithm to help the robot moves in autonomous motion. The proposed robot is light in order not to trigger mines and be destroyed. He proposed effective method to destroy mines where they are using arm on the robot to help defusing method. The purpose of the thesis is to give an efficient solution for the landmines problem. By using robots that are capable of exploring and destroying buried landmines. The author also aimed to make the proposed robot with simle components to provide the soldiers and local landmines environments citizens with effective solution that they can use to save their lives.

Book Autonomous Robotic Landmine Detection Mapping and Avoidance

Download or read book Autonomous Robotic Landmine Detection Mapping and Avoidance written by Sandesh Gowda and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 89 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this thesis is to develop detection algorithm to can solve socially challenging issue of Landmine mapping & removal. Landmines which used to be a safety measure during wars, play a dangerous role in civilian life, in and around the post combat regions with approximately 78 countries observing an estimate of 42 human lives killed every day. To prevent the number of casualties and manual mine clearance, mobile robots can be used for detection & mapping of the mine field region. Mapping, detection and avoidance are the primary challenges faced on a landmine removal. In this thesis, mine center is estimated using non-linear optimization and validated through simulations for mapping. Distinguishing between the surrogate mines from the metals is accomplished using Support Vector Machine (SVM) classification, an algorithm which is formulated and validated through simulations. After detection and mapping of mines, a potential field method is employed for avoidance in simulation and incorporated the ROS (Robot Operating System) Navigation Stack on the actual robot which follows selective A* and Dijkstra's algorithm. Results show that the Gaussian field parameter estimation localizes the mine appropriately even if the detected signals are not on the center of the mine and this is achieved through constrained non-linear optimization. This adds a repulsive force around the mine avoiding the step-over with a new navigation path generation. The SVM classifier simulations provide a clear distinguishing base line between the mines and metals based on the three channel data inputted. In future, with further anomalies into consideration, a working autonomous robot would be achieved with detection, mapping and avoidance of landmines.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Insects are extremely successful creatures, thriving in our ever-changing and unpredictable world. One of the factors behind their success is the use of odour to increase their efficiency when searching for food, to help navigate between a source of food and their nest and to enable them to find a mate. Mobile robots would have their capabilities greatly enhanced if they could make use of similar techniques. This important book describes current research aimed at giving robots the ability to generate, detect and discriminate between odours, together with the control algorithms using such sensory information.

Book Anti personnel Landmine Detection for Humanitarian Demining

Download or read book Anti personnel Landmine Detection for Humanitarian Demining written by Katsuhisa Furuta and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-01-24 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anti-personnel Landmine Detection for Humanitarian Demining reports on state-of-the-art technologies developed during a Japanese National Research Project (2002–2007). The conventional method of landmine detection is using metal detectors to sense the metal in mines, but often other metal fragments in minefields camouflage landmines and hinder progress using this form of demining. The challenge is to develop detection systems that can discriminate between AP landmines and random metal fragments. The JST adopted research proposals and the results are reported here. This book concentrates on aspects of three approaches to AP mine detection: enhancing and confirming the results of metal-detection scans using GPR; using robot vehicles and manipulators to operate within minefields remotely; and methods of sensing the explosives within mines. Results are presented in the fields of GPR, nuclear quadrupole resonance, neutron thermal analysis and biosensors. The integration of these methods for workable robot operation is demonstrated. The project was carried out in conjunction with mine action centers in Croatia, Cambodia and Afghanistan. Evaluation data from field trials are also given.

Book Decentralized Coverage Control Problems For Mobile Robotic Sensor and Actuator Networks

Download or read book Decentralized Coverage Control Problems For Mobile Robotic Sensor and Actuator Networks written by Andrey V. Savkin and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces various coverage control problems for mobile sensor networks including barrier, sweep and blanket. Unlike many existing algorithms, all of the robotic sensor and actuator motion algorithms developed in the book are fully decentralized or distributed, computationally efficient, easily implementable in engineering practice and based only on information on the closest neighbours of each mobile sensor and actuator and local information about the environment. Moreover, the mobile robotic sensors have no prior information about the environment in which they operation. These various types of coverage problems have never been covered before by a single book in a systematic way. Another topic of this book is the study of mobile robotic sensor and actuator networks. Many modern engineering applications include the use of sensor and actuator networks to provide efficient and effective monitoring and control of industrial and environmental processes. Such mobile sensor and actuator networks are able to achieve improved performance and efficient monitoring together with reduction in power consumption and production cost.

Book Search and Rescue Robotics

Download or read book Search and Rescue Robotics written by Multiple Authors and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2017-08-23 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the event of large crises (earthquakes, typhoons, floods, ...), a primordial task of the fire and rescue services is the search for human survivors on the incident site. This is a complex and dangerous task, which - too often - leads to loss of lives among the human crisis managers themselves. This book explains how unmanned search can be added to the toolkit of the search and rescue workers, offering a valuable tool to save human lives and to speed up the search and rescue process. The introduction of robotic tools in the world of search and rescue is not straightforward, due to the fact that the search and rescue context is extremely technology-unfriendly, meaning that very robust solutions, which can be deployed extremely quickly, are required. Multiple research projects across the world are tackling this problem and in this book, a special focus is placed on showcasing the results of the European Union ICARUS project on this subject. The ICARUS project proposes to equip first responders with a comprehensive and integrated set of unmanned search and rescue tools, to increase the situational awareness of human crisis managers, so that more work can be done in a shorter amount of time. The ICARUS tools consist of assistive unmanned air, ground, and sea vehicles, equipped with victim-detection sensors. The unmanned vehicles collaborate as a coordinated team, communicating via ad hoc cognitive radio networking. To ensure optimal human-robot collaboration, these tools are seamlessly integrated into the command and control equipment of the human crisis managers and a set of training and support tools is provided to them in order to learn to use the ICARUS system. The research leading to these results has received funding from the European Community's Seventh Framework Programme (FP7/2007-2013) under grant agreement number 285417. The publishing of this book was funded by the EC FP7 Post-Grant Open Access Pilot programme.

Book A Human Animal Robot Cooperative System for Anti Personal Mine Detection

Download or read book A Human Animal Robot Cooperative System for Anti Personal Mine Detection written by Thrishantha Nanayakkara and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To the best of the author's knowledge, this is the first time a human-robot-animal integrated system is tested for antipersonnel landmine detection. The proposed system tries to integrate distinct capabilities of three different systems to improve the effectiveness of landmine detection in a cluttered environment. The mongoose is found to be a rodent with extremely sensitive olfactory capabilities, dexterous navigation capabilities in a cluttered environment, and small enough to burrow through rubble. The lightweight legged robot (4kg) can move in a minefield without detonating landmines, carry a metal detector, and interact with the mongoose and the human. The remote human operator can analyze the behaviors of the animal-robot system and judge how best the system should move from a remote location. Therefore, the system achieves a fundamental objective of humanitarian landmine detection by improving the effectiveness and accelerating the detection process through removing the human operator from the minefield. The design gave much emphasis on reducing the need to have expensive sensors and sophisticated image processing systems in order to make it as cost effective and reliable as possible. Therefore, there were only a single sonar proximity sensor and two bumper switches attached to the front of the robot. However, further improvements are needed in the arbitration mechanism that optimizes the synergy among the human, robot, and the animal by improving the learning algorithms. The robot can learn from both the animal and the human though the teaching signals can be noisy. The animal can learn from both the human and the robot to navigate with the robot attached to it. The human can learn from the animal and the robot by observing the limitations of the animal-robot system. We are conducting further research on learning algorithms that suits this scenario. Commensurate efforts have to be taken to simplify the learning algorithms to suit commercially available embedded processors and to improve the processor network to accommodate the extra processing load. Furthermore we hope to automate the training process of mongooses based on the wealth of knowledge we have gathered through manual training. This will allow the trainers to run the training sessions round the clock.
