Book Landbird Inventory for Lewis and Clark National Historical Park 2006

Download or read book Landbird Inventory for Lewis and Clark National Historical Park 2006 written by National Park National Park Service and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2013-10-08 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reported declines of many birds breeding in North America have stimulated interest in avian population trends and mechanisms driving those trends (DeSante and George 1994). The North American Breeding Bird Survey suggests that landbird populations in Pacific Northwest lateseral forests appear to be in serious decline (Sauer et al. 2003), and data from the national parks are particularly important for teasing out possible causes. Quantitative survey data for bird habitat usage and abundance at Lewis and Clark National Historical Park are currently lacking. Existing presence/absence data are insufficient for tracking population changes over time, or for gauging the effects of any future management actions that may alter habitat conditions. These goals require species-specific density estimates.

Book Landbird Monitoring in the North Coast and Cascades Network

Download or read book Landbird Monitoring in the North Coast and Cascades Network written by National Park National Park Service and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2013-10-08 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2006 we conducted our second and final pilot field season to field-test and refine our Draft North Coast and Cascades Network Landbird Monitoring Protocol. The protocol requires annual survey effort consisting of an annual panel (34 transects) plus an alternating panel (another 34 transects) in the large parks-Mount Rainier National Park (MORA), North Cascades National Park Service Complex (NOCA), or Olympic National Park (OLYM) -and the completion of a grid of survey points at either of the smaller parks-San Juan Island National Historical Park (SAJH) or Lewis and Clark National Historical Park (LEWI)-which will be surveyed in alternating years. However, for this pilot year we reduced the effort and surveyed only the annual panel of transects in the large parks as well as the full survey grid at LEWI. Comprehensive results from the LEWI surveys are provided in a separate report (Siegel et al. 2009b). In the three large parks, we completed surveys at 446 point count stations arrayed along 33 transects-one intended transect went unsurveyed because heavy snowpack prevented access to it. Nevertheless, we were generally pleased with the ability of our surveyors to relocate point count stations established during our 2005 pilot field season (Siegel et al. 2006a).

Download or read book North Coast and Cascades Network Landbird Monitoring written by National Park National Park Service and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2013-10-08 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2007 we fully implemented the landbird monitoring program in the North Coast and Cascades Network (NCCN) for the first time. The NCCN landbird monitoring protocol requires annual survey effort consisting of an annual panel (34 transects) plus one of five alternating panels (an additional 34 transects) in the large parks-Mount Rainier National Park (MORA), North Cascades National Park Service Complex (NOCA), or Olympic National Park (OLYM)-and the completion of a grid of survey points at either of the smaller parks-San Juan Island National Historical Park (SAJH) or Lewis and Clark National Historical Park (LEWI)-which are surveyed in alternating years. We previously surveyed the annual panel of transects in 2005 and 2006, during pilot field seasons devoted to protocol development and testing.

Book A Handbook of Global Freshwater Invasive Species

Download or read book A Handbook of Global Freshwater Invasive Species written by Robert A. Francis and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-03-12 with total page 918 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Invasive non-native species are a major threat to global biodiversity. Often introduced accidentally through international travel or trade, they invade and colonize new habitats, often with devastating consequences for the local flora and fauna. Their environmental impacts can range from damage to resource production (e.g. agriculture and forestry) and infrastructure (e.g. buildings, road and water supply), to human health. They consequently can have major economic impacts. It is a priority to prevent their introduction and spread, as well as to control them. Freshwater ecosystems are particularly at risk from invasions and are landscape corridors that facilitate the spread of invasives. This book reviews the current state of knowledge of the most notable global invasive freshwater species or groups, based on their severity of economic impact, geographic distribution outside of their native range, extent of research, and recognition of the ecological severity of the impact of the species by the IUCN. As well as some of the very well-known species, the book also covers some invasives that are emerging as serious threats. Examples covered include a range of aquatic and riparian plants, insects, molluscs, crustacea, fish, amphibians, reptiles and mammals, as well as some major pathogens of aquatic organisms. The book also includes overview chapters synthesizing the ecological impact of invasive species in fresh water and summarizing practical implications for the management of rivers and other freshwater habitats.

Book ASSESSMENT AND CONTROL OF BIOLOGICAL INVASION RISKS

Download or read book ASSESSMENT AND CONTROL OF BIOLOGICAL INVASION RISKS written by Fumito Koike and published by World Conservation Union. This book was released on 2006 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biological invasion, an issue of growing importance due to the significant increase in international transportation and trade, can disturb the balance of local ecosystems and even destroy them. This collection of papers presented at the International Conference on Assessment and Control of Biological Invasion Risks held in August 2004 at Yokohama National University discusses risk assessment, risk management and eradication. It also includes contributions reporting on the current status of invasion and the properties of alien species in East Asia.

Book Monitoring Animal Populations and Their Habitats

Download or read book Monitoring Animal Populations and Their Habitats written by Brenda McComb and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2010-03-11 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the face of so many unprecedented changes in our environment, the pressure is on scientists to lead the way toward a more sustainable future. Written by a team of ecologists, Monitoring Animal Populations and Their Habitats: A Practitioner’s Guide provides a framework that natural resource managers and researchers can use to design monitoring programs that will benefit future generations by distilling the information needed to make informed decisions. In addition, this text is valuable for undergraduate- and graduate-level courses that are focused on monitoring animal populations. With the aid of more than 90 illustrations and a four-page color insert, this book offers practical guidance for the entire monitoring process, from incorporating stakeholder input and data collection, to data management, analysis, and reporting. It establishes the basis for why, what, how, where, and when monitoring should be conducted; describes how to analyze and interpret the data; explains how to budget for monitoring efforts; and discusses how to assemble reports of use in decision-making. The book takes a multi-scaled and multi-taxa approach, focusing on monitoring vertebrate populations and upland habitats, but the recommendations and suggestions presented are applicable to a variety of monitoring programs. Lastly, the book explores the future of monitoring techniques, enabling researchers to better plan for the future of wildlife populations and their habitats. Monitoring Animal Populations and Their Habitats: A Practitioner’s Guide furthers the goal of achieving a world in which biodiversity is allowed to evolve and flourish in the face of such uncertainties as climate change, invasive species proliferation, land use expansion, and population growth.
