Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Environmental Justice and Activism in Indianapolis examines how place attachment, social capital, and perceptions influence citizen responses when their communities are environmentally threatened. Book Local Environmental Movements

Download or read book Local Environmental Movements written by Pradyumna Karan and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2010-09-12 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Increasing evidence of the irreparable damage humans have inflicted on the planet has caused many to adopt a defeatist attitude toward the future of the global environment. Local Environmental Movements: A Comparative Study of the United States and Japan analyzes how local groups in both Japan and the United States refuse to surrender the Earth to a depleted and polluted fate. Drawing on numerous case studies, scholars from around the world discuss efforts by grassroots organizations and movements to protect the environment and to preserve the landscapes they love and depend upon. The authors examine citizen campaigns protesting nuclear radiation and chemical weapons disposal. Other groups have organized to protect farmlands and urban landscapes to groups that organize to preserve steams, wildlife habitats, tidal flats, coral reefs, National Parks, and biodiversity. These small groups of determined citizens are occasionally successful, demonstrating the power of democracy against seemingly insurmountable odds. In other cases, the groups failed to bring about the desired change. This book explores the distinctive leaders, the relevant laws and regulations, local politics, and the historical and cultural contexts that influenced the goals and successes of the various groups. The contributors conclude that there is no one single environmental movement but many, and the volume emphasizes grassroots movements and advocacy groups that represent local constituencies. By studying these groups and their respective challenges, Local Environmental Movements highlights the common themes as well as the distinctive features of environmental advocates in the United States and Japan. Over decades, these groups’ have nurtured environmental awareness and promoted the concept of sustainable development that respects the need for both environmental protection and cultural preservation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who has time for community in the modern metropolis? The answer may surprise you: apparently lots of us. As this book discusses, religious communities have long been an important way for people in all parts of the modern city to come together. Whether in new suburban subdivisions, in rural areas undergoing change, or in inner-city neighborhoods, people of all social backgrounds, races, and economic means have used their congregations as a way to set down new roots and to hold on to old ones. Focusing on Indianapolis, Indiana, a city in America's geographical and cultural heartland, Souls of the City describes the range of changes to America's cities and American religion during the last decades of the 20th century. In showing the historical ability of religious congregations to become "places" of worship, this book challenges those who lament the soulless nature of modern metropolitan life.

Book Rising Expectations

Download or read book Rising Expectations written by Arthur Emery Farnsley and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rising Expectations examines the current attempts to enlist religious congregations as partners in social services and community development. It highlights stark demographic realities about urban congregations in order to challenge current assumptions about welfare reform and to encourage realistic expectations for the future. Both governmental officials and civic leaders are calling on religious congregations to become more active partners in social welfare reforms, especially through Charitable Choice. Based on research conducted in Indianapolis, Indiana, Farnsley examines the context for those changes and evaluates the current and potential role for congregations as community development agencies and social service providers. Farnsley begins with an assessment of congregations, seen as one interdependent piece in a complex urban environment. He then deals with the three basic assumptions about congregations that drive contemporary faith-based reforms: "How well do congregations know their neighbors?" "Is smaller better?" and "Can congregations impart values?" Finally, the book considers plans for future implementation or expansion of reform.
