Book Ethnic Realignments

Download or read book Ethnic Realignments written by Matthew Hoddie and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2006 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ethnic Realignments offers a fresh look at the phenomenon of rapidly changing ethnic identity claims. By focusing on the countries of Australia, China, Malaysia, and India, Matthew Hoddie provides a comparative study arguing that government policies designed to favor one ethnic group over another can influence individuals among the disfavored group to change their 'identities' and recast themselves as members of the favored group. Hoddie employs a statistical methodology to lay out the conditions and factors that lead to these ethnic identity changes, thereby contributing to the ongoing debate concerning the malleability of ethnic identity. Ethnic Realignments is a significant work for scholars interested in the politics of ethnicity and the effectiveness of affirmative action policies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Man Booker Prize-winning author of The Finkler Question went Down Under, and this is what he hilariously found. On what he calls “the adventure of his life,” Howard Jacobson travels around Australia, never entirely sure where he is heading next or whether he has the courage to tackle the wild life of the bush, the wild men of the outback, or the even wilder women of the seaboard cities. In pursuit of the best of Australian good times, he joins revelers at Uluru, argues with racists in the Kimberleys, parties with winegrowers in the Barossa, and falls for ballet dancers in Perth. And even as vexed questions of national identity and Aboriginal land rights present themselves, his love for Australia and Australians never falters.

Download or read book What the Bones Say written by John J. Cove and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 1995 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is a thoroughly engaging history of one line of human science research and its consequences for the hapless, and often helpless, subject of study: the indigenous peoples of Tasmania. Research questions arising from skeletal remains were posed and pursued on the assumption that these vanishing forebears bore no relation to, nor had any intrinsic meaning for, aboriginal Tasmanians of today. The author finds these premises incorrect, exposing both the biases of research done for political ends, and documenting their galvanizing effect on high-profile native issues.

Book Talking Sideways

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reg Dodd grew up at Finniss Springs, on striking desert country bordering South Australia's Lake Eyre. For the Arabunna and for many other Aboriginal people, Finniss Springs has been a homeland and a refuge. It has also been a cattle station, an Aboriginal mission, a battlefield, a place of learning, and a living museum. With his long-time friend and filmmaker Malcolm McKinnon, Dodd reflects on his upbringing in a cross-cultural environment that defied social conventions of the time. They also write candidly about the tensions surrounding power, authority, and Indigenous knowledge that have defined the recent decades of this resource-rich area. Talking Sideways is part history, part memoir, and part cultural road-map. Together, Dodd and McKinnon reveal the unique history of this extraordinary place and share their concerns and their hopes for its future.

Book Theorizing the Americanist Tradition

Download or read book Theorizing the Americanist Tradition written by Regna Darnell and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contributions From Twenty-Five Distinguished Scholars Are Brought together here to provide a comprehensive, accessible, state of the art appraisal of interdisciplinary research at the boundaries of anthropology, linguistics and Native Studies. The collection seeks to correct the prevailing notion that the Americanist tradition in anthropology. (typified by Franz Boas and his colleagues) is a theoretical. Participants in this dialogue accepted the challenge of making their underlying theoretical assumptions explicit. The papers range from the history of anthropology and linguistics to present innovations within this tradition. Issues of authenticity lead to examination of changing traditions in text and literacy in linguistics and education, and in emerging contemporary discourse spanning the Americas. The volume is framed by Coyote, the quintessential American trickster who is the inspiration for much of the volume's play with tradition and change, with the construction of identity through discourse, and with the interaction of Americanists and First Nations/Native American communities. Remarks on the future of the Americanist tradition forms a critical part of this collection. The collection pioneers in juxtaposing Canadian and American theoretical work on language and revitalizes a shared tradition centred around the study of meaning. Readers are invited to enter this open-ended and vibrant Americanist discourse.
