Book Land based Observations of Beluga at Tuututuup Nuvunga Southern Ungava Bay Summer 1993

This book was released on 1994 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on catch records, the beluga population in southern Ungava Bay was estimated to contain at least 1 000 individuals before the start of commercial exploitation in the late 1870s (Finley et al 1982, Reeves and Mitchell 1987). During the 1880s, the Hudson's Bay Company conducted a beluga fishery at the Whale River in conjunction with a fishery on the Koksoak. Commercial exploitation continued in the Koksoak and Leaf rivers until the turn of the century, whereupon the combination of reduced whale numbers and the reluctance of the belugas to enter nets led to the closure of the commercial fishery (Reeves and Mitchell 1987). It is unclear whether the belugas which presently summer in estuaries in southern Ungava Bay form a resident stock, or are migrants from Hudson Strait. The low number of beluga which now frequent the Mucalic [Marralik] and Whale Rivers may be due to reduced population size or human disturbance which may have caused the whales to go elsewhere. These rivers are on the sea-route for travel between Kuujjuaq and Kangiqsualujjuaq. A popular charr fishing area exists in the area to the northeast of the Mucalic River. People also hunt seal and gather eggs in this vicinity. Caron (1987) described the behaviour and reaction of belugas to human disturbance at the Nastapoka River, eastern Hudson Bay, but comparable studies have not been conducted in southern Ungava Bay. The present study was conducted at Tuttutuup Nuvunga to document the level of human activity and the frequency of occupation by belugas in the area of the Mucalic [Marralik] River and Whale estuaries.
