Book excerpt: Excerpt from Land and Labour in a Deccan Village: Study No; 2 The study of rural life and of rural conditions by close inquiry into the circumstances of a single unit, be it village, parish, or estate, has come to the front prominently in recent years as a method of social and economic investigation. And by the use of this method, if the villages to be studied are well chosen, a very much more intimate acquaintance with the actual conditions of life than by any other method can be obtained. And this is certainly true in the Deccan where the villages are still the economic and social units in a sense that is far more true than is the case in most countries, and to an extent which even in India is, I think, only found in the Peninsula. The villages are perhaps now tending to be less the relatively isolated units than hitherto, but they are still so to an extent that gives the knowledge even of a single village a very special value for the study of the whole rural conditions of the country. On this account, with the collaboration of a number of friends and assistants, I undertook some years ago the study of a single village near Poona, and the result was published in 1917 under the title of 'Land and Labour in a Deccan Village.' This purported to give a picture of life and conditions in a 'dry' Deccan village. By a 'dry' village, I mean one where irrigation is very limited in amount and where the prosperity of the village depends almost entirely on the annual monsoon rain. That study revealed a number of unexpected facts, and the general conclusions which I drew were certainly of a far more depressing character than I had expected. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Land and Labour in a Deccan Village During the last few years there has been constantly increasing interest in the economic problems of rural India. That these are special in character, and not by any means analogous to those of many other countries is very obvious to those who have made even a superficial study of the question. As regards the Deccan, interest in the matter was quickened some years ago by the appearance of Keatinge's "Rural Economy in the Bombay Deccan," a book which for the first time collected together and reviewed the available data with regard to the economic history and present economic position of the rural population of the western portion of the large central plateau of peninsular India. This book was in the highest sense stimulating. One felt, in reading it, that the author had raised a large number of questions which urgently demanded solution, and had pointed out the method of local close detailed study which alone could give the solution demanded. One felt, on the other hand, that many of the conclusions at which Keatinge arrived were extremely doubtful, not because of the fault of his methods, but on account of the inadequacy of his data. It seemed, in fact, that the close study of a single village might give helpful data in approaching many of the matters which arise when any of the numerous economic and economic agricultural questions in the Deccan are considered. And on suggesting to my assistants at the Poona Agricultural College that such a close study of a single village would be valuable, they volunteered to carry it out. Led by Messrs. D. L. Sahasrabuddhe, B.Sc., L.Ag., N. V. Kanitkar, B.Sc., B.Ag., V. A. Tamhane, B.Sc., L.Ag., they undertook the very long, laborious, and painstaking investigation of which an account is given in the following pages.
