Book Calder n in the German Lands and the Low Countries

Download or read book Calder n in the German Lands and the Low Countries written by Henry W. Sullivan and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2009-10-29 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book recounts the afterlife of the great Golden Age dramatist Pedro Calderón de la Barca in Dutch and German-speaking Europe. The high quality of the German critical and philosophical tradition has led to a far greater appreciation of Calderón outside than inside his native Spain, and it is in the German territories that the playwright's influence has been most remarkable and widespread. Professor Sullivan documents and analyses Calderón's reception and influence on the stage and on playwriting, criticism, philosophy and music in these territories. In addressing his book to students of both the German and the Spanish traditions Professor Sullivan has supplied the necessary background to both cultures and has rendered all quotations into English. The range of material will also make the book important for students of philosophy, comparative drama and German opera.

Book Calderon and the Baroque Tradition

Download or read book Calderon and the Baroque Tradition written by Kurt Levy and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Calderón and the Baroque Tradition is the outcome of a tricentennial commemoration of the seventeenth century Spanish poet and dramatist, Pedro Calderón de la Barca, and a tribute to a distinguished tradition in Calderonian studies at the University of Toronto. A major dramatist of the Spanish Golden Age and a master of the auto sacramental genre, Calderón produced some one hundred and twenty comedias and eighty autos during his rather colourful lifetime. This volume assembles an impressive collection of essays relating the baroque artistic tradition to such aspects of Calderón's theatre as the use of music, mythology, costume, and his distinctive dramatic technique. It will be of interest and value both to students of Spanish drama and Hispanic life in general and to followers of Calderón in particular.

Book The Poems of Shelley Volume Six

Download or read book The Poems of Shelley Volume Six written by Carlene Adamson and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-06-20 with total page 727 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Percy Bysshe Shelley (1792–1822) was one of the major poets of the English Romantic period. This is the final volume of a six-volume edition of The Poems of Shelley, which aims to present all of Shelley’s poems in chronological order and with full annotation. Date and circumstances of composition are provided for each poem and all manuscript and printed sources relevant to establishing an authoritative text are freshly examined and assessed. Headnotes and footnotes furnish the personal, literary, historical and scientific information necessary to an informed reading of Shelley’s varied and allusive verse. Most of the poems in the present volume were composed between late January 1822 and Shelley’s death on 8 July 1822. These include the lyrics to Jane Williams, Fragments of an Unfinished Drama and The Triumph of Life as well as translations from Goethe’s Faust (1822) and Calderón’s El mágico prodigioso. The appendices include editions of Poetical Essay on the Existing State of Things (1811), a poem made publicly accessible by the Bodleian Libraries in 2015 for the first time since its publication, and translations by Shelley from Goethe’s Faust (1815), Aeschylus’ Prometheus Bound (1817) and Homer’s Odyssey (probably 1817). In addition to accompanying commentaries, there are extensive bibliographies to the poems, a chronological table of Shelley’s life and publications, and indexes to titles and first lines. Now completed, this is the most comprehensive edition of Shelley’s poetry available to students and scholars.

Book Conscience on Stage

Download or read book Conscience on Stage written by Hilaire Kallendorf and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is no accident that some variation of the question 'What should I do?' appears in over three-quarters of the comedic plays of the Spanish Golden Age. Casuistical dialogue was a concern, even an obsession, of Spanish playwrights during the seventeenth century, many of whom were educated by Jesuit casuists. Conscience on Stage is a study of casuistry or case morality as the foundation for a poetics of seventeenth-century Spanish >em>comedias. Hilaire Kallendorf examines the Jesuit upbringing and casuistical education of major playwrights of the Spanish Golden Age, many of whom were also priests, and introduces the vocabulary of casuistry, as expressed in both confessors' manuals and in stage plays. Engaging issues of class, gender, and age to explore scenes of advice-giving and receiving, she demonstrates how the culture-specific construct of 'conscience' in early modern Spain can be recovered by means of a Foucauldian genealogy, which enlists the skills of philology at the service of a larger vision of the history of ideas. This study outlines and reiterates the relationship of theatre to casuistry, the Jesuit contributions to Spanish literary theory and practice, and the importance of casuistry for the study of early modern subjectivity.
