Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lancaster and York, Vol. 1: A Century of English History (A. D. 1399-1485) At the risk of being stigmatized as a drum and trumpet historian, I have taken great pains in verifying as far as possible the incidents of battles, the marches of armies, the strength of their numbers. Under this last head the Official documents' in our Record Office supply data of unique value. I would invite especial attention to the proofs I have been able to adduce of the smallness of English expeditionary forces, and the exaggerations in their estimates of numbers to which even the best of chroniclers were prone. My conclusions on this subject ought to be Of far-reaching application and interest. The verification of dates is another point to which especial attention has been paid, in the interest of scholars. As matters now stand, a specialist searching for the date of some event which might be considered conspicuous - say a Royal Progress or a Royal Voyage - as a fixed point for the determination of other dates, finds himself in some uncertainty as to the very year of the events. A work dealing with so lengthy a period can only be offered as a summary, but I would fain hope a summary that at each step may suggest to the reader how much more might be said, how very much more remains to be found out. The book has been composed to serve no Special theory or object, save that of bringing the reader as far as possible face to face with the facts. Book excerpt: In this sweeping history, Trevor Royle details one of the bloodiest episodes in British history. The prize was the crown of England, and the players were the rival houses of Lancaster and York. The dynastic quarrel threatened the collapse of the monarchy as a succession of weak rulers failed to deal with an overzealous aristocracy, plunging England into a series of violent encounters. The bloody battles and political intrigue between the rival heirs of King Edward III brought forth one of the most dynamic ruling families of England--the Tudors.

This book was released on 2017-12-19 with total page 568 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoirs of the Rival Houses of York and Lancaster, Historical and Biographical, Vol. 1 of 2: Embracing a Period of English History From the Accession of Richard II, to the Death of Henry VII IT is with much diffidence that a pen so untried offers its first attempt in historical composition to the public eye. Attracted by the grandeur {of the subject, and strongly induced to enter a field comparatively neglected by former writers, the author has perhaps trusted too securely to the in terest attached to the period which she has en deavoured to illustrate, and ventured upon a theme which required higher and more varied powers. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essays on the York Mystery Plays, uniting voices from the scholarly world with the York community that has assumed responsibility for their production today. The York Play of Corpus Christi, also known as the York Cycle, has been central to the study of early English theatre for over a century and a touchstone for the revival of medieval dramatic practice for over fifty years. But these two endeavours... have often found little common ground. This volume therefore accomplishes something very important. It brings together scholars of medieval English drama and places them in dialogue with experienced practtitioners from the community. Together, they share a common commitment to understanding how performances matter to the communities that produce them, and how plays intersect with other public activities. CAROL SYMES, Professor of History, University of Illinois at Urbana. This volume provides a wealth of new insights into the performance of mystery plays in medieval York and their modern revival. It utilises both academic study, and the practical experience of those who now produce the cycle within York itself on wagons in the street, in an approximation of their original performance. A number of topics are covered. The manuscript is linked to Richard III; the Masons are introduced as non-guildsmen in an enterprise assumed to be guild-specific; families, not just male heads of households, are shown to be important to the dramatic narrative; and cognitive theory elucidates performance past and present.Recent productions are discussed in lively detail by those directly responsible for them, leading to analyses of performances in Israel, Spain, and Australia, not all of them of a predictable kind, which offer further angles on the medieval dramatic tradition. Professor Margaret Rogerson teaches in the Department of English at the University of Sydney. Contributors: Margaret Rogerson, Keith Jones, Richard Beadle, Sheila K.
