Book The Story Time of the British Empire

Download or read book The Story Time of the British Empire written by Sadhana Naithani and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2010-05-12 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Story-Time of the British Empire, author Sadhana Naithani examines folklore collections compiled by British colonial administrators, military men, missionaries, and women in the British colonies of Africa, Asia, and Australia between 1860 and 1950. Much of this work was accomplished in the context of colonial relations and done by non-folklorists, yet these oral narratives and poetic expressions of non-Europeans were transcribed, translated, published, and discussed internationally. Naithani analyzes the role of folklore scholarship in the construction of colonial cultural politics as well as in the conception of international folklore studies. Since most folklore scholarship and cultural history focuses exclusively on specific nations, there is little study of cross-cultural phenomena about empire and/or postcoloniality. Naithani argues that connecting cultural histories, especially in relation to previously colonized countries, is essential to understanding those countries' folklore, as these folk traditions result from both internal and European influence. The author also makes clear the role folklore and its study played in shaping intercultural perceptions that continue to exist in the academic and popular realms today. The Story-Time of the British Empire is a bold argument for a twenty-first-century vision of folklore studies that is international in scope and that understands folklore as a transnational entity.

Book Insights from the Lives of Olive Doke and Paul Kasonga for Pioneer Mission and Church Planting Today

Download or read book Insights from the Lives of Olive Doke and Paul Kasonga for Pioneer Mission and Church Planting Today written by Conrad Mbewe and published by Langham Monographs. This book was released on 2014-12-14 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Insights from the Lives of Olive Doke and Paul Kasonga for Pioneer Mission and Church Planting Today deals with the question of the hand over process of pioneer missionaries to the first indigenous leaders in church planting missions situations. It recognises the fact this process when wrongly handled has caused a lot of harm to the work of missions. The case study in this thesis, which took place at the start of Baptist work in Zambia, shows one example in which it was done exceptionally well. The researcher also uses biblical interpretation and qualitative empirical analysis to augment his research. He finally posits that the mutual respect and mutual admiration between Olive Doke and Paul Kasonga is what led to this admirable result.

Book The Politics of Reproductive Ritual

Download or read book The Politics of Reproductive Ritual written by Jeffery M. Paige and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2023-04-28 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A welcome addition. They argue that rituals of reproduction in preindustrial societies are essentially political. In these societies, they say, men need to control the reproductive power of women in order to establish political power; where there is no law or central government, ritual is used as a way of gaining control. The type of ritual will vary, they conclude, according to the economic base of the society. . . .for those whoa re interested in the subject, this book is indispensable. Its thesis is challenging and the documentation is excellent. Paige and Paige have mad ean essential contribution to a long debate, and their theory is sure to stir new and lively controversy." --Science Digest This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press's mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact.
