Published in 1901, the book aims to shed light on the life and scientific contributions of Jean-Baptiste Lamarck, a French biologist who is often considered one of the pioneers of evolutionary theory. In the book, Packard delves into Lamarck's early life, education, and career as a naturalist in 18th and early 19th century France. He explores Lamarck's groundbreaking ideas about the transmutation of species, which laid the groundwork for later evolutionary theories, including Charles Darwin's theory of natural selection. One of the central themes of the book is Lamarck's theory of inheritance of acquired characteristics, also known as Lamarckism. Lamarck proposed that organisms can pass on traits acquired during their lifetime to their offspring, thereby driving evolutionary change. Packard examines the historical context in which Lamarck developed his ideas and the scientific controversies surrounding his work. Furthermore, Packard discusses Lamarck's contributions to other areas of biology, including his work on invertebrate zoology and taxonomy. He highlights Lamarck's meticulous observations and classification of organisms, which laid the foundation for modern biological classification systems. Throughout the book, Packard offers a balanced assessment of Lamarck's legacy, acknowledging his pioneering contributions to evolutionary theory while also addressing the criticisms and challenges his ideas faced from contemporaries and later scientists. "Lamarck, the Founder of Evolution" provides readers with a comprehensive understanding of Lamarck's life and work, placing him in the context of the broader scientific and intellectual currents of his time. It remains a valuable resource for scholars and enthusiasts interested in the history of evolutionary thought and the development of modern biology.

This book was released on 2018-08-15 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lamarck, the Founder of Evolution His Life and Work by A. S. (Alpheus Spring) Packard Although it is now a century since Lamarck published the germs of his theory, it is perhaps only within the past fifty years that the scientific world and the general public have become familiar with the name of Lamarck and of Lamarckism. The rise and rehabilitation of the Lamarckian theory of organic evolution, so that it has become a rival of Darwinism; the prevalence of these views in the United States, Germany, England, and especially in France, where its author is justly regarded as the real founder of organic evolution, has invested his name with a new interest, and led to a desire to learn some of the details of his life and work, and of his theory as he unfolded it in 1800 and subsequent years, and finally expounded it in 1809. The time seems ripe, therefore, for a more extended sketch of Lamarck and his theory, as well as of his work as a philosophical biologist, than has yet appeared. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. The aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature, and our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. Book Guided Evolution of Society

Download or read book Guided Evolution of Society written by Bela H. Banathy and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on a comprehensive review of human and societal evolution the book develops an approach to conscious, self-guided evolution. In the course of the evolutionary journey of our species, there have been three seminal events. The first happened some seven million yeas ago, when our humanoid ancestors entered on the evolutionary scene. Their journey toward the second crucial event lasted over six million years when - as the greatest event of our evolutionary history - homo sapiens sapiens, started the revolutionary process of cultural evolution. Today, we have arrived at the threshold of the third major event, `the revolution of conscious evolution,' when it becomes our responsibility to enter into the evolutionary design space and guide the evolutionary journey of our species. The book tells the story of the first six million years of the journey in just enough detail to understand how evolution had worked in times when it was primarily biological, driven by natural selection. With the human revolution some fifty thousand years ago, with the emergence of self-reflective consciousness, the evolutionary process transformed from biological into cultural. From this point on, the book follows the journey with detailed attention, in order to learn how cultural evolution works. The book is organized in three parts. Part One commences with an exposition of a brief history of the evolutionary idea through time with a focus on a review of the science of general evolution and specifically social and societal evolution. Next, the book unfolds the `evolutionary story' of our species from the time when the first humanoids entered the evolutionary scene to our current era. Part Two develops a systems view of evolution, explores the ways and means of how evolution works, characterizes evolutionary consciousness and develops the idea of conscious evolution. Part Three builds upon the knowledge developed in the first two parts and sets forth the key conditions of conscious, self-guided evolution, elaborating the core condition, which is the acquisition of evolutionary competence through evolutionary learning. The focus of this part is on an approach to the design of evolutionary guidance systems that our families, neighborhoods, communities, organizations, social and societal systems can use to design the future they aspire to attain. The work is set aside from other statements in three important ways. It provides: (1) a comprehensive review of how evolution has worked with a focus on socio-cultural evolution, (2) an explanation of evolutionary consciousness and the conditions of engaging in conscious evolution, and (3) most significantly, it develops a detailed approach and a methodology to the design of evolutionary guidance systems.
