Book excerpt: The fifth International Symposium on Palaeolimnology was held at Ambleside in the English Lake District from August 31 to September 6, 1989. During the 65 papers were presented at seven sessions and 52 posters symposium displayed. Three late afternoon/evening special lectures were given, one of which was a memorial to the late Ed. Deevey, to whom this volume is dedicated. Associated with the symposium were five excursions to various parts of the UK and Ireland, and a visit to the laboratories of the Freshwater Biological Association and Institute of Freshwater Ecology. Conference participants were also invited to a buffet party and visit to the Lake District National Park Centre at Brockhole as the guests of the Park Authority. The local organising committee for the symposium also formed the editorial panel for this volume. They included: Peter Appleby, Rick Battarbee, John Dearing, Roger Flower, Elizabeth Haworth, Frank Oldfield, Paddy O'Sullivan and John Smith. Book excerpt: To trace the effects of cultural eutrophication, one meter sediment cores were used to determine the history of calcareous and noncalcareous Wisconsin lakes. Cores were analyzed for carbon, phosphorus, calcium, magnesium, potassium, aluminum, iron, and manganese. Determinations of organic nitrogen, exchangeable ammonium and acid soluble phosphorus were made on selected sedimentary profiles. Recent sedimentation rates and identification of pre- and postcultural sediments were determined by ragweed pollen. Enrichment of phosphorus in postcultural Lake Mendota, Wisconsin, sediments are the effect of increased phosphorus supply from domestic sewage. Chemical stratigraphy of concentration-depth diagrams permit a qualitative evaluation of cultural activities. Potentialities and limitations of using recent lake sediments to evaluate eutrophication are discussed.

The scientific issues discuss the influences of hydrological and climatological phenomena on short-term changes in sediment flux, the relationships between biogeochemical (limnological) processes in the water column and the formation of varves, the preservation of environmental signals in varved sediments, and possibilities of synchronizing varved records with other high-resolution environmental archives such as tree rings.
