Since plant physiology is taught at every university that offers a life sciences, forestry or agricultural program, and physiology is a focus at research institutes and agencies worldwide, the book is a must-have for university and research institution libraries.

Book Nature Strange and Beautiful

Download or read book Nature Strange and Beautiful written by Egbert Giles Leigh and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2019-08-20 with total page 431 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A beautifully written exploration of how cooperation shaped life on earth, from its single-celled beginnings to complex human societies In this rich, wide-ranging, beautifully illustrated volume, Egbert Leigh explores the results of billions of years of evolution at work. Leigh, who has spent five decades on Panama’s Barro Colorado Island reflecting on the organization of various amazingly diverse tropical ecosystems, now shows how selection on “selfish genes” gives rise to complex modes of cooperation and interdependence. With the help of such artists as the celebrated nature photographer Christian Ziegler, natural history illustrator Deborah Miriam Kaspari, and Damond Kyllo, Leigh explains basic concepts of evolutionary biology, ranging from life’s single-celled beginnings to the complex societies humans have formed today. The book covers a range of topics, focusing on adaptation, competition, mutualism, heredity, natural selection, sexual selection, genetics, and language. Leigh’s reflections on evolution, competition, and cooperation show how the natural world becomes even more beautiful when viewed in the light of evolution.

Book Pot Pollen in Stingless Bee Melittology

Download or read book Pot Pollen in Stingless Bee Melittology written by Patricia Vit and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-03-05 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers pot-pollen—the other product, besides honey, stored in cerumen pots by Meliponini. Critical assessment is given of stingless bee and pot-pollen biodiversity in the Americas, Africa, Asia and Oceania. Topics addressed include historical biogeography, cultural knowledge, bee foraging behavior, pollination, ecological interactions, health applications, microbiology, the natural history of bee nests, and chemical, bioactive and individual plant components in stored pollen. Pot-pollen maintains the livelihoods of stingless bees and provides many interesting biological products that are just now beginning to be understood. The Meliponini have developed particular nesting biologies, uses of building materials, and an architecture for pollen storage. Environmental windows provide optimal temperature and availability of pollen sources for success in plant pollination and pollen storage. Palynological composition and pollen taxonomy are used to assess stingless honey bee pollination services. Pollen processing with microorganisms in the nest modifies chemical composition and bioactivity, and confers nutraceutical benefits to the honey and pollen widely relished by native people. Humans have always used stingless bees. Yet, sustainable meliponiculture (stingless bee-keeping) projects have so far lacked a treatise on pot-pollen, which experts provide in this transdisciplinary, groundbreaking volume.

Book Seed Endophytes

  • Author : Satish Kumar Verma
  • Publisher : Springer
  • Release : 2019-04-05
  • ISBN : 3030105040
  • Pages : 497 pages

Download or read book Seed Endophytes written by Satish Kumar Verma and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-04-05 with total page 497 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the importance and roles of seed microbiomes in sustainable agriculture by exploring the diversity of microbes vectored on and within seeds of both cultivated and non-cultivated plants. It provides essential insights into how seeds can be adapted to enhance microbiome vectoring, how damaged seed microbiomes can be assembled again and how seed microbiomes can be conserved. Plant seeds carry not only embryos and nutrients to fuel early seedling growth, but also microbes that modulate development, soil nutrient acquisition, and defense against pathogens and other stressors. Many of these microbes (bacteria and fungi) become endophytic, entering into the tissues of plants, and typically exist within plants without inducing negative effects. Although they have been reported in all plants examined to date, the extent to which plants rely on seed vectored microbiomes to enhance seedling competitiveness and survival is largely unappreciated. How microbes function to increase the fitness of seedlings is also little understood. The book is a unique and important resource for researchers and students in microbial ecology and biotechnology. Further, it appeals to applied academic and industrial agriculturists interested in increasing crop health and yield.

Book Small Arms

    Book Details:
  • Author : Mia Bloom
  • Publisher : Cornell University Press
  • Release : 2019-05-15
  • ISBN : 1501712063
  • Pages : 343 pages

Download or read book Small Arms written by Mia Bloom and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2019-05-15 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do terrorist organizations use children to support their cause and carry out their activities? Small Arms uncovers the brutal truth behind the mobilization of children by terrorist groups. Mia Bloom and John Horgan show us the grim underbelly of society that allows and even encourages the use of children to conduct terrorist activities. They provide readers with the who, what, when, why, and how of this increasingly concerning situation, illuminating a phenomenon that to most of us seems abhorrent. And yet, they argue, for terrorist groups the use of children carries many benefits. Children possess skills that adults lack. They often bring innovation and creativity. Children are, in fact, a superb demographic from which to recruit if you are a terrorist. Small Arms answers questions about recruitment strategies and tactics, determines what makes a child terrorist and what makes him or her different from an adult one, and charts the ways in which organizations use them. The unconventional focus on child and youth militants allows the authors to, in essence, give us a biography of the child terrorist and the organizations that use them. We are taken inside the mind of the adult and the child to witness that which perhaps most scares us.

Book Tradition and Economy in Village India

Download or read book Tradition and Economy in Village India written by K. Ishwaran and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-08-21 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1998. The efficacy of the modern village or community studies lies in their deriving better understandings of the structure and function of institutions. They perform this office of social science by analysing the living workings of institutions in the experience of human beings struggling between traditional values and modern imperatives of change. the book before us is a community study, in that it lays bare before us a living village, in an interesting and too little reported region of the great and complex land of India. It is also, most importantly, the study of a local variant of a traditional economies institution, called elsewhere the Jajmani system, better the traditional economy of clientage and patronage, uniting service castes in ritual and craft services to the landowners and cultivators of a corporate village. an object of interest and seminal for social science since its discovery in the seminal historical studies of Sir Henry Maine.
