Book Lake Alchichica Limnology

Download or read book Lake Alchichica Limnology written by Javier Alcocer and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-03-04 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book provides a comprehensive account of a tropical lake, Alchichica, considering that tropical limnology is by far less known and well-understood than temperate. Many of the well-known temperate limnology paradigms do not apply in tropical limnology, such as the ≥ 1oC/m thermocline concept, or the role of phosphorous as a limiting nutrient. Lake Alchichica is - most likely – the best limnologically known Mexican lake up to date. Twenty years of continuous monitoring has led us to understand this deep, warm monomictic lake. The peculiar chemical composition of this saline lake – sodium-alkaline with a high concentration in magnesium waters, and groundwater-fed – led to the formation of its unique stromatolite ring that has become world-famous, studied by scientists from various countries. From a biological point of view, this relatively small maar lake displays a comparatively low species richness but surprisingly is plentiful in microendemic species for a recently-formed lake (13,000-6,300 years old, at the Late Pleistocene/Holocene Epoch), eleven of which already described, with more to come. Researchers and students interested in tropical limnology, extreme ecosystems, evolutionary biology, astrobiology, and microbiology will find this book a must-read.

Book Advances in Mexican Limnology Basic and Applied Aspects

Download or read book Advances in Mexican Limnology Basic and Applied Aspects written by Javier Alcocer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present volume comprises aspects of both basic and applied limnology. They include works on physical, chemical, and biological limnology, as well as experimental approaches in selected areas. Contributions from investigators regarding aquatic conservation and biodiversity were specifically not available and therefore, these aspects are considered in various included works. Most manuscripts deal with lentic aquatic resources. This is not surprising since Mexican limnology followed the general study trend of that from temperate limnology. Despite this, we must emphasize that lotic resources in Mexico are quite important both locally and regionally. This does not mean that rivers are not under limnological research in Mexico, just that their study has only recently begun. It is the intention of the volume to stimulate a larger section of limnologists to further research in this field. It is to be hoped that policy-framing governmental authorities in Mexico will benefit from it, and consider some of the aspects described so that further damage to the epicontinental waterbodies can be halted, and remedial measures can be considered in the future.

Book Mexican Fauna in the Anthropocene

Download or read book Mexican Fauna in the Anthropocene written by Robert W. Jones and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-01-30 with total page 593 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This contributed volume presents an analysis of the current conservation status of major faunal groups in Mexico. The chapters describe a prognosis of future challenges, and also explore the expanding threats inherent in the Anthropocene within the context of the unique physical, biological and cultural aspects of the nation. Covering 27 chapters, and written by Mexican and international authors, this book analyzes a wide range of vertebrate and invertebrate animal taxa, their ecosystems and the critical processes related to their present conservation status. This volume is an important reference material for researchers, conservationists and students interested in the biological and ecological processes shaping the Mexican fauna.

Download or read book Saline Lakes written by John M. Melack and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-18 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inland saline waters are threatened worldwide by diversion and pollution of their inflows, introductions of exotic species and economic development of these ecologically valuable habitats. Since 1979 a series of international symposia on inland saline waters has served to strengthen and expand the scope of limnological research on inland saline waters. The seventh conference continued this tradition and the papers derived from the conference focused on the ecology of microbial communities, the influence of habitat geochemistry on biogeography of flora and fauna, physical and geochemical processes, and the conservation of inland saline waters. Of particular note are papers on Walker Lake, Nevada (USA), and the Salton Sea and Mono Lake, California (USA). Continued local, national and international efforts are required to inform the public and decision-makers about the environmental problems faced by saline waters. The papers in this volume will serve this end and should be of interest to aquatic ecologists, limnologists, aquaculturalists, and water resource managers.

Download or read book Limnology written by Robert G. Wetzel and published by Gulf Professional Publishing. This book was released on 2001-04-06 with total page 1023 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gives a comparative treatment of topics accross lake, reservoir, and rive ecosystems. These analysis do indeed indicate differences among the properties of lakes, land-water interface regions, reservoirs, and rivers. Importantly, these analysis also indicate marked commonality in function.

Book Limnological Aspects of Recreational Lakes

Download or read book Limnological Aspects of Recreational Lakes written by Kenneth Marsh Mackenthun and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Limnological Aspects of Recreational Lakes" considers the many problems associated with the recreational use of lakes, reservoirs, and ponds. These standing-water bodies receive the most concentrated and varied recreational use of any waters, and provide enjoyment to the greatest number of people. Individuals using such areas soon become aware of associated biological problems and often demand remedial measures to alleviate developing nuisances or the prevention of them before they arise. This book is written for the person faced with problems of interpretation and management in dealing with the phenomena of recreational lakes. In most States, a permit or permission must be obtained from an appropriate agency prior to the institution of controls. Then controls are instituted, the recommended controlling agent and its field application must be tempered with a scientist's astute knowledge of both the problem and the ecological ramifications of a control program.
