Book The Story of Lafayette Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Story of Lafayette Classic Reprint written by Margaret Jane Codd and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Lafayette The youthful minds of America gain what little knowledge they possess of Lafayette from the necessarily brief space given him in the ordinary school history; so that to most of them, he is little but a name. We, of the new generation, should not be so forgetful of his services; for to his untiring efforts we are indebted for the help which came from France in our time of need. Without it we could scarcely have hoped to win the glorious victory of Yorktown, and the success of our struggle for independence might have been very doubtful. The story of the brave heart and pure life of Lafayette cannot fail to arouse noble thoughts in the minds of its readers; and the knowledge of his generous efforts to help our land in its days of trouble, must ever prove an incentive to feelings of the purest patriotism. It is hard to condense the story of such a life into this little book, and, through lack of space, much of interest has unavoidably been omitted. It is also difficult to attain to any great degree of originality in such a work; but the compilation has been carefully made from the most reliable sources; and this little volume is given to the public in the hope that, in some small measure, it may help to make the character and services of Lafayette better known to the children of America. Book Lafayette Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lafayette As the bridle fell loosely upon the pony's neck the animal began to crop the grass that grew sparsely in the midst of the purple heather and golden bloom of the moor, while his young master surveyed the interlaced branches of the forest or gazed searchingly into the dark recesses of the wood as though seek ing for some sign of bird or beast. It was a midsummer's day, very sultry even in the shade of the forest. There was a dull haze in the atmosphere through which the July sun beat with fierce heat. The air was close and heavy with that oppression which presages a storm. There was no stir of living thing in the underbrush. It was as though the denizens of the woods had sensed the approach of a tempest, and had retired to their coverts. Not a leaf rustled. It was quiet, extremely so, but the lad seemed to find nothing unusual in such stillness. Presently the silence was broken by an echoing shout. When the work was first published it made the bestseller list, and in 1949 it was turned into an award-winning film featuring Robert Ryan and Audrey Totter. This reprinting of the original, unchanged 1928 poem features dynamic, specially commissioned artwork by Erik Kriek that vividly conveys the story of Pansy, an up-and-coming black prize fighter who takes on all comers. When he was in the ring, "It was over before you knew it. He'd carve you up like a leg of mutton. And drop you flat with a sock on the button." Pansy's complicated love life leads to a spell in prison and his career subsequently takes a nosedive; but he continues to box until the fateful night his fight managers and opponent triple-cross him and he meets a grisly end at the hands of a vengeful gang.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recollections of the Private Life of General Lafayette I have been under the necessity of speaking of many individuals who still exist, some of them belonging to, and others unconnected with Lafayette's family. I trust they will pardon me for having introduced their names without previously obtaining their consent; and I am the more inclined to rely upon their indulgence, as I have fortunately had no occasion to present them in any other than a favourable light. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Boys' Life of Lafayette This is no work of fiction. It is sober history; yet if the bare facts it tells were set forth without the connecting links, its preface might be made to look like the plot of a dime novel. It is the story of a poor boy who inherited great wealth; who ran away from home to fight for liberty and glory; who became a major-general before he was twenty years old; who knew every nook and corner of the palace at Versailles, yet was the blood brother of American Indians; who tried vainly to save the lives of his king and queen; who was in favor of law, yet remained a rebel to the end of his days; who suffered an unjust imprisonment which has well been called' 'a night five years iong who was twice practically Dictator of France; and who, in his old age, was called upon to make a great decision. Book For Money and Elders

Download or read book For Money and Elders written by Robert W. Blunt and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2019-11-19 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many observers of Kenya’s complicated history see causes for concern, from the use of public office for private gain to a constitutional structure historically lopsided towards the executive branch. Yet efforts from critics and academics to diagnose the country’s problems do not often consider what these fiscal and political issues mean to ordinary Kenyans. How do Kenyans express their own political understanding, make sense of governance, and articulate what they expect from their leaders? In For Money and Elders, Robert W. Blunt addresses these questions by turning to the political, economic, and religious signs in circulation in Kenya today. He examines how Kenyans attempt to make sense of political instability caused by the uncertainty of authority behind everything from currency to title deeds. When the symbolic order of a society is up for grabs, he shows, violence may seem like an expedient way to enforce the authority of signs. Drawing on fertile concepts of sovereignty, elderhood, counterfeiting, acephaly, and more, Blunt explores phenomena as diverse as the destabilization of ritual “oaths,” public anxieties about Satanism with the advent of democratic reform, and mistrust of official signs. The result is a fascinating glimpse into Kenya’s past and present and a penetrating reflection on meanings of violence in African politics.
