Book Locker Room Diaries

Download or read book Locker Room Diaries written by Leslie Goldman and published by Da Capo Lifelong Books. This book was released on 2007-09-10 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I wish my thighs were smaller. "If only I could lose ten pounds." A wake-up call for any woman who has engaged in the "if only" wishing game, Locker Room Diaries uses the unique lens of the locker room to reveal what, exactly, goes into "shaping" not just a woman's body but her body image. The locker room can be a wondrous retreat, a place to toss aside the worries of the day, but it is also where our flaws become most apparent-and where most of us can't help but wonder how we "measure up." Often dressed in no more than a towel, Leslie Goldman spent five years talking with women of all shapes and sizes about their body image, from taut twenty-somethings to heavyset seniors. Why is it, she asks, that almost no one seems satisfied with her physique? From compulsive workouts to daily dates with the scale, from bikini waxes to body fat measurements, American women are swept up in a constant quest for the "perfect" body. Thankfully, more than one woman reveals how she halted her cycle of self-loathing and learned to like her body as is. Blending expert opinion with wonderfully intimate, often laugh-outloud, confidences, Locker Room Diaries will inspire anyone who knows the highs of exercise to leave the lows of self-esteem behind-and, most especially, once and for all, to step off that scale!

Book excerpt: “Sidelined is the feminist sports book we've all been waiting for.” —Jessica Valenti Shrill meets Brotopia in this personal and researched look at women's rights and issues through the lens of sports, from an award-winning sports journalist and women's advocate In a society that is digging deep into the misogyny underlying our traditions and media, the world of sports is especially fertile ground. From casual sexism, like condescending coverage of women’s pro sports, to more serious issues, like athletes who abuse their partners and face only minimal consequences, this area of our culture is home to a vast swath of gender issues that apply to all of us—whether or not our work and leisure time revolve around what happens on the field. No one is better equipped to examine sports through this feminist lens than sports journalist Julie DiCaro. Throughout her experiences covering professional sports for more than a decade, DiCaro has been outspoken about the exploitation of the female body, the covert and overt sexism women face in the workplace, and the male-driven toxicity in sports fandom. Now, through candid interviews, personal anecdotes, and deep research, she's tackling these thorny issues and exploring what America can do to give women a fair and competitive playing field in sports and beyond. Covering everything from the abusive online environment at Barstool Sports to the sexist treatment of Serena Williams and professional women's teams fighting for equal pay and treatment, and looking back at pioneering women who first took on the patriarchy in sports media, Sidelined will illuminate the ways sports present a microcosm of life as a woman in America—and the power in fighting back.

Book excerpt: "An entertaining yet sobering description of the life and challenges of a female sportswriter, with insights into the Oakland Athletics and other professional teams. Recommended for most collections." -- Library Journal "Witty, insightful, articulate. If you have a daughter, let her read it. If you have a son, make him read it." -- Tacoma News Tribune Now in development for the silver screen with CBS Films! In the wee hours of the morning after sportswriter Susan Fornoff had received a gift-wrapped rat from Oakland A's slugger Dave Kingman, the phone in her hotel room rang. It was one of Kingman's teammates, calling to say, "Baseball is a fraternity, a fraternity of men. And you will never understand that or be a part of that because you are a woman." Kingman and friend might have been speaking for baseball management, male sportswriters and sports editors, and their teammates, for all of the daily sexism and frequent harassment Fornoff encountered on the beat. But it wasn't always difficult to be a woman in the quintessential men's world of professional sports -- sometimes it was fun. These handsome, rich, young men -- including Hall of Famers Reggie Jackson, Dennis Eckersley and Rickey Henderson, plus famed sluggers Jose Canseco and Mark McGwire -- often talked to Fornoff in a way they didn't talk to other writers, simply because she was a woman. Their insights gave her inside knowledge of the Oakland A's and an understanding of the baseball lifestyle that is uniquely personal. Fornoff, a pretty blonde then in her late 20s and early 30s, danced with manager Tony La Russa, sunbathed on pitcher Dave Stewart's yacht, drank woo-woos with players at a favorite Chicago watering hole. She tells what a female reporter really "sees" inside the locker room, what she learned traveling with a team, and, especially, how to become accepted as one of the guys without ever becoming one. Part memoir and part expose, this update on the original 1993 manuscript contains history and insight into the early days of women sports journalists making their way into men's locker rooms.

Book Locker Room Talk

Download or read book Locker Room Talk written by Melissa Ludtke and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2024-08-16 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While sportswriters rushed into Major League Baseball locker rooms to talk with players, MLB Commissioner Bowie Kuhn barred the lone woman from entering along with them. That reporter, 26-year-old Sports Illustrated reporter Melissa Ludtke, charged Kuhn with gender discrimination, and after the lawyers argued Ludtke v. Kuhn in federal court, she won. Her 1978 groundbreaking case affirmed her equal rights, and the judge’s order opened the doors for several generations of women to be hired in sports media. Locker Room Talk is Ludtke’s gripping account of being at the core of this globally covered case that churned up ugly prejudices about the place of women in sports. Kuhn claimed that allowing women into locker rooms would violate his players’ “sexual privacy.” Late-night television comedy sketches mocked her as newspaper cartoonists portrayed her as a sexy, buxom looker who wanted to ogle the naked athletes’ bodies. She weaves these public perspectives throughout her vivid depiction of the court drama overseen by Judge Constance Baker Motley, the first Black woman to serve on the federal bench. She recounts how her lawyer, F.A.O. “Fritz” Schwarz employed an ingenious legal strategy that persuaded Judge Motley to invoke the Fourteenth Amendment’s Equal Protection Clause in giving Ludtke access identical to her male counterparts. Locker Room Talk is both an inspiring story of one woman’s determination to do a job dominated by men and an illuminating portrait of a defining moment for women’s rights.

Book A Locker Room of Her Own

Download or read book A Locker Room of Her Own written by David C. Ogden and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2013-06-03 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Female athletes are too often perceived as interlopers in the historically male-dominated world of sports. Obstacles specific to women are of particular focus in A Locker Room of Her Own. Race, sexual orientation, and the similar qualities ancillary to gender bear special exploration in how they impact an athlete's story. Central to this volume is the contention that women in their role as inherent outsiders are placed in a unique position even more complicated than the usual experiences of inequality and discord associated with race and sports. The contributors explore and critique the notion that in order to be considered among the pantheon of athletic heroes one cannot deviate from the traditional demographic profile, that of the white male. These essays look specifically and critically at the nature of gender and sexuality within the contested nexus of race, reputation, and sport. The collection explores the reputations of iconic and pioneering sports figures and the cultural and social forces that helped to forge their unique and often problematic legacies. Women athletes discussed in this volume include Babe Didrikson Zaharias, the women of the AAGPBL, Billie Jean King, Venus and Serena Williams, Marion Jones, Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova, Sheryl Swoopes, Florence Griffith Joyner, Roberta Gibb and Kathrine Switzer, and Danica Patrick.
