Download or read book Lady Delphinia s Deception written by Karen Frisch and published by ImaJinn Books. This book was released on 2011-03-30 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: He'll stop at nothing to learn her secrets . . . Lady Delphinia Marlowe is dismayed when a carriage accident turns Captain Nicholas Hainsworth, the Earl of Greymore, into an unexpected guest forced to recuperate at her country house on the Devon coast. The ruggedly handsome Earl's ability to navigate his way across Exmoor's harsh and unfamiliar terrain makes him precisely the kind of man England needs in her military--and the last kind Delphinia wants under her roof. If he learns what she's up to, it will not only destroy her family's reputation but land her in prison. Nicholas wonders why the beautiful but reclusive mistress of Briarcombe prefers the starlight of Exmoor to the gaslights of London. While he suspects Delphinia does not like him overmuch, his fascination with her grows despite her mysterious behavior. Her midnight wanderings on the moors suggest she is involved with smuggling, a crime that conflicts with his duty as a former naval captain. Threatened by Nicholas's presence, Delphinia struggles to hide the secret life forced upon her by her past. But her greatest fear is that her unwelcome guest could not only be her soul mate but an agent of the Crown who will place duty above matters of the heart. Karen Frisch writes Regency romances for ImaJinn Books and won First Place in the 2007 Writer's Digest Popular Fiction Awards' Mystery/Crime Category. While tracing her family history, she was thrilled to discover she is a cousin of Edgar Allan Poe removed by six generations. She lives in New England with her husband, their two children, and two shelter dogs. She is also a portrait artist, with illustrations on her website at KarenFrisch.weebly.com.

Download or read book Female Serial Killers written by Peter Vronsky and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2007-08-07 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this fascinating book, Peter Vronsky exposes and investigates the phenomenon of women who kill—and the political, economic, social and sexual implications buried with each victim. How many of us are even remotely prepared to imagine our mothers, daughters, sisters or grandmothers as fiendish killers? For centuries we have been conditioned to think of serial murderers and psychopathic predators as men—with women registering low on our paranoia radar. Perhaps that’s why so many trusting husbands, lovers, family friends, and children have fallen prey to “the female monster.” From history’s earliest recorded cases of homicidal females to Irma Grese, the Nazi Beast of Belsen, from Britain’s notorious child-slayer Myra Hindley to ‘Honeymoon Killer’ Martha Beck to the sensational cult of Aileen Wournos—the first female serial killer-as-celebrity—to cult killers, homicidal missionaries, and our pop-culture fascination with the sexy femme fatale, Vronsky not only challenges our ordinary standards of good and evil but also defies our basic accepted perceptions of gender role and identity. Download or read book Cinema of Solitude written by Charles Ramírez Berg and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2010-07-05 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: La crisis, a period of political and economic turmoil in Mexico that began in the late 1960s, spawned a new era in Mexican cinema. Known as el Nuevo Cine (the New Cinema), these films presented alienated characters caught in a painful transition period in which old family, gender, and social roles have ceased to function without being replaced by viable new ones. These are the films explored by Charles Ramírez Berg in Cinema of Solitude, the first book-length critical study of Mexican cinema in English. Berg discusses the major films and filmmakers of el Nuevo Cine in depth. He analyzes dozens of commercial movies, from popular comedies and adventures to award-winning films. Introductory chapters address the issue of mexicanidad (Mexican national identity) and outline Mexican history, the history of film as popular culture and as a leading national industry, and the ideological dynamics of Mexican cinema. In thematically arranged chapters, Berg investigates the images of women, men, and social structures portrayed in New Cinema films. He finds that women characters have begun to reject traditional stereotypes for more positive images, while male characters have grown ambiguous and undefined as machismo is abandoned. Other chapters trace the continuing marginalization of Indians in Mexican culture, the changes in male dominance within the family, and the disruptive social and economic effects caused by migration. For everyone interested in Mexican culture as reflected in its major cinematic productions, as well as students of film theory and national cinemas, this book will be important reading.
