Book Lady Chatterley s Villa

Download or read book Lady Chatterley s Villa written by Richard Owen and published by Haus Publishing. This book was released on 2015-02-15 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: November 1925 found David and Frieda Lawrence on the Italian Riviera, looking for sun, sea air, and health. The Lawrences were exhilarated by life in their rented villa, set amid olive groves and vineyards, with a view of the sparkling Mediterranean. The drab English winter couldn’t have been farther away. But before long Frieda found herself irresistibly attracted to their landlord, a dashing Italian army officer, and the resulting affair served as the background for Lawrence’s writing: while in the villa, he turned out two stories, “Sun” and “The Virgin and the Gypsy,” both prefiguring Lady Chatterley’s Lover in their depiction of women fatally drawn to earthy, muscular men. Built on the unpublished, and previously unexplored, letters and diaries of Rina Secker, the Anglo-Italian wife of Lawrence’s publisher, and featuring never-before-published letters from Lawrence, Lady Chatterley’s Villa reconstructs the drama of the tempestuous marriage, and the ways it fired Lawrence’s creativity. Along the way, Richard Owen offers a new accounting of Lawrence’s passion for Italy, tracing his travels along the coasts and islands and his deep engagement with Italian culture. This exploration of a little-studied, but crucial period of the writer’s life will be a must for Lawrence’s many fans.

Book Lady Chatterley

Download or read book Lady Chatterley written by Derek Britton and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-03-31 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1988, Lady Chatterley explores the events and experiences which surrounded D. H. Lawrence’s writing of his infamous last novel, Lady Chatterley’s Lover. The account begins with Lawrence’s return to Europe in September 1925 and ends with the publication in June 1928 of the final draft of a novel which exists in three related yet dissimilar versions. Derek Britton adds a great deal of new material to the established facts and theories concerning Lawrence’s life and work during this period. In the chapters covering Lawrence’s return to the Midlands in September 1926 when the collapse of the national miners’ strike in that area was imminent, a detailed reconstruction of Lawrence’s journeys and experiences reveals the extent to which the themes of the novel, the social and physical aspects of the landscape and Lawrence’s initial impulse to write depended crucially on the author’s last visit to his native region. This book will appeal both to those with special interests in Lawrence and the modern novel, and to the general reader.

Book excerpt: With her soft brown hair, lithe figure and big, wondering eyes, Constance Chatterley is possessed of a certain vitality. Yet she is deeply unhappy; married to an invalid, she is almost as inwardly paralysed as her husband Clifford is paralysed below the waist. It is not until she finds refuge in the arms of Mellors the game-keeper, a solitary man of a class apart, that she feels regenerated. Together they move from an outer world of chaos towards an inner world of fulfillment. Included here, in his essay A Propos of Lady Chatterley's Lover, are Lawrence's own, final thoughts on male-female relationships in the modern world. This Penguin edition reproduces the newly established Cambridge text, the first edition ever to restore to Lawrence's most famous work the words he wrote and the first to correct authoritatively the 1928 Florence edition which Lawrence personally supervised. @DeadFlowers Our farmhand is so aloof and Romantic. Book excerpt: David Herbert LAWRENCE (1885-1930), was born at Eastwood, Nottinghamshire, one of five children of a miner and an ex-schoolteacher. He was often ill as a child and grew up in considerable poverty. He attended Nottingham High School for three years, but at 15 was forced to give up his education and take a job for a short time as a clerk in a surgical goods factory and then became a pupil teacher. In 1906, having worked to save the necessary, he took up a scholarship at Nottingham University College to study for a teachers certificate. He was already writing poetry and short stories and he now began his first novel "The White Peacock" (1911), which was followed by "The Trespasser" (1912). He taught for two years at an elementary school in Croydon but after the death of his mother he became seriously ill and was advised to give up teaching. His first major novel, "Sons and Lovers" (1913) is a faithful autobiographical account of these early years. His next novel, "The Rainbow" (1915), was seized by the police and declared obscene. At the Villa Mirenda, near Florence, he finished "Lady Chatterleys Lover" (1928), his last novel and the one that was to cause more furore than any other. He died in Vence on 2 March 1930.

Book excerpt: This collection of writings by the author of Sons and Lovers presents his thoughts on religion, art, psychology and politics in a newly restored text. Though D. H. Lawrence was one of the great writers of the twentieth century, his works were severely corrupted by the stringent house-styling of printers and the intrusive editing of timid publishers. A team of scholars at Cambridge University Press has worked for more than thirty years to restore the definitive texts of D. H. Lawrence in The Cambridge Editions. Written while he was dying, Apocalypse is Lawrence’s final book. In it, he presents both a radical criticism of our civilization and a statement of unwavering belief in man’s power to create “a new heaven and a new earth.” This volume also includes Lawrence’s review of Book of Revelationby John Orman, and his Introduction to The Dragon of the Apocalypseby Frederick Carter. The Appendixes also present previously unpublished material on Revelation.

Download or read book The Prussian Officer and Other Stories written by D. H. Lawrence and published by Penguin. This book was released on 1995-06-01 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twelve stories of remarkable power and sensitivity from one of Britain's great modernists His first published collection, these twelve stories were written between 1907 and 1914, during a crucial period of development for Lawrence from which he emerged a leading figure of the modernist movement. Reaching new levels of feeling and experience, these stories range from the tale of a Prussian officer who drives his orderly towards a bloody reckoning, to the strangely exotic elements of 'A Fragment of Stained Glass', and the divisions within society and conflicts of the heart that form the central themes of 'Daughters of a Vicar'. Interweaving individual lives, their happiness, failures and defeats, with the profound forces of nature, Lawrence has created stories of remarkable power and sensitivity. This Penguin edition reproduces the newly established Cambridge text, which is based on Lawrence's manuscripts, typescripts and corrected proofs.
